Here's #3 in my series of Johto Gym Leader Oneshots!

Spooks

“It’s finally going to be finished,” said Eusine, shaking his head in disbelief.

“And we,” I stressed, poking him in the chest in a friendly manner, “are going to be the ones to open it.”

“I can’t believe it took twelve years, though,” he said thoughtfully.

“Well,” I explained, “it took us two years to get the proposal through the council in the first place. Then we had to draw up the designs, and try and get it as close to the original as possible. I swear, if I have to read another book on traditional architecture, I am going to throw it at somebody!”

“Yes, well,” Eusine said, obviously searching for a way to change the subject. “At least it’s going to be finished in a couple of weeks.”

“Yeah, you’re right,” I said, clapping him on the back. “Come on, let’s show you some of our famous Ecruteak hospitality, eh?” Eusine laughed as I steered him away from the Gym.

“I’ve experienced your Ecruteak hospitality before, my friend. To tell the truth, it was one of the reasons I came at all!”

“Oh, so it was nothing to do with opening the Brass Tower?” I teased.

“Of course not!” he laughed. “What on earth gave you that idea?”

“Let’s go to the Dancing Dratini,” I suggested. Eusine snorted.

“Who the hell named that place?” he asked. “Oh, never mind! As long as they serve the right stuff, who cares what it’s called? It’s quite likely I’ll be unconscious by the time we leave, anyway, eh?”

Shaking my head, I steered him towards the bar. Eusine had changed a lot in the last few years, I reflected. Then again, hadn’t I as well? Hadn’t everybody?

Three hours later, Eusine was as drunk as a Stunky. Lying half over the bar, he bought everybody yet another round. I hadn’t been drinking. I was only here for Eusine’s benefit. I was enjoying myself immensely, though. I secretly sent out each of my Ghost Pokémon, and set them on the bar’s patrons. I watched in amusement as Gengar crept up behind a large, fat man and hissed in his ear, causing him to fall off his chair and knock a table over. I giggled like a schoolgirl.

Well, fine. Perhaps I’d had a couple after all.

“Morty!” somebody yelled. Blinking, I looked over to the door to see a vaguely familiar young man gesturing wildly at me. “You gotta come quick, Morty! It’s the Brass Tower!” Stumbling outside, I was instantly assailed by a frigid wind. It was at least ten o’clock by now, and freezing. At least the cold woke me up.

“What’s the problem?” I asked the guy who came in to get me. “It’s the Brass Tower, Morty!” he exclaimed, dragging me towards it. “There’s something in there, and we need you to deal with it!”

When we arrived at the Brass Tower, one of the folks who lived nearby was standing there in his pyjamas. He pointed shakily at the Tower.

“There’s something horrible in there, Morty! Please, you have to help us! It’s making the most ghastly noises!” I smiled, and stepped over the orange plastic fence into the construction site. The ground around the base of the Tower was pitted with holes and ditches, and various pieces of construction machinery were lying, abandoned, on the ground. Picking my way carefully between the hazards in the dark, I made my way to the door. The ground floor from the original Tower had been saved, restored, and incorporated into the new design. As I pushed the door open, I heard the noise for the first time.

It was indeed a ghastly noise. It sounded like a Pokémon, but it was certainly no Pokémon that I had ever encountered. The architecture of the Tower distorted and echoed the noise, making it impossible to trace.

“Go, Gengar,” I whispered. “Find out what’s making that noise, and bring it back here if you can.” Gengar hissed quietly and slipped into the shadows. I waited patiently. Soon enough, I was rewarded by the unmistakable sound of Gengar powering up a Shadow Ball. The enigmatic noise came again, this time with a screechy quality, before falling silent at last. Seconds later, Gengar popped up beside me, pointing up the stairs.

“Thank you, Gengar,” I said, returning him. Curious, I took the stairs two at a time. I came to the next floor, and stopped dead in my tracks. There was nothing there at all. The only abnormal thing in the room was a large hole in the wall. The wall hadn’t been broken forcibly; I would have heard it. I hadn’t noticed a hole on this wall when I approached the tower before, either, so it must have been done in the last five minutes. The strangest thing, though, was that the hole looked as if it had been melted out of the wall. There were no rough edges, no splinters, nothing. But wood didn’t melt, and this part of the Tower hadn’t had its brass coating yet . . . “How bizarre,” I mused.

Looking out of the hole, I thought I saw a large white bird in the distance. I blinked, and it was gone. I must have been imagining things.

Yes, Kyuu-chan, you're right.

GFA, I fail to see how this focuses on Eusine. Could you explain a bit more?
