A word from the author: Welcome to my fanfic, unfortunately (or fortunately if you didn't like it) my last fanfic Their Story was short lived due to some other commitments. But now they are out of the way here comes the next fanfiction, Chronicles of a Gym Leader, which follows the story of Matt, the same Matt from their story and how he copes with the life of a gym leader. It will also follow the stories of the people he lets into his life. Enjoy the story, or not; but at least identify the foreshadowing.

Chapter 1 : My New Routines
Chapter 2: My last 3 days of freedom - Promethea Falls
Chapter 3: My last 3 days of freedom - The Serpents Gate
Chapter 4: My last 3 days of freedom - The Void and Tezen Geothermal ltd.
Chapter 1: My new routines

Well, the day started like any other, I woke up in a tent and became familiar with a smell I like to refer to as...
But then I realised there was no smell of muk fudge, nor was there the image of a crappy tent that is made of just the right materials that the water seeps through just that little bit. I was in a large room with soft yellow coloured wallpaper and a posh wood skirting board, or whatever you call it, reaching to waist height. I buried my head back into the pillow of a cream-coloured bed and groaned. I then looked at a clock on the wall; 10:35.

“Oh crap, I’m late.” I screamed.
A roaring voice from the room next to mine replied:
“Shut up, will ya! Some of us are trying to get some...”
Another angry, distant voice came into play:
“Both of you pipe down before I break the Arcanine on you!”

I decided to run, and quickly. Not just because of the probably illegal threat I just received, but also because I was late for one of the biggest moments of my life. After grabbing a quick breakfast of something-on-toast, I scurried down the streets of Zertinan City. On my way I met a couple of interesting sites – A Magnemite was being chased by two others that were attached to each other and the best sight ever, two drunk builders trying to make cement using a Pelliper.

Out of breath, I started walking and took a look at my watch. 10:50. I had ten minutes to get there, if I didn’t they can wait, as important as it is it isn’t that interesting to be honest, only one TV station was going to be there and it was only Gabby and Ty; only one person is less interested in what they do than them two and that is the weirdo who owns that new shop on Saxon Road, it doesn’t even have a door. As soon as my breath was reclaimed I could see the gym in the distance; which in Zertinan City is good as you can see barely five feet in any direction thanks to all the skyscrapers and such. I’m exaggerating again, ten feet maybe.

Upon arriving in the gym, I saw not the familiar spire, encrusted with jewels and flooded with mist. I didn’t see a Salamence, or a Garchomp for that matter. I saw steel platforms and thin wood plated all over the walls. I spent a long time wandering the ground floor, just looking around at all blueprints for the new chambers. I had decided to convert the building into a tower. I wanted as many floors as the old spire went upwards as it would reduce the amount of time spent building, the roof would be brilliant for flying matches, and a chamber or two underground would be great. You see, as well as a gym where you can get a badge, I want my gym to be a place where anyone can come in for a good time with their Pokémon or train casually; so essentially it was a leisure centre.

I had a good look at the garden floor. It sported a forested area an lush field of flowers and a grassy plain and a waterfall coming from what I would assume is the water room. Gabby approached me and I guessed she wanted an interview, but then the waterfall receded and my Gyarados fell through the floor.

As unfortunate as that just was, Gyarados was unharmed and I managed to get out of an interview as Gabby was called to the Zertinan Department Store for a breaking story. I took a few of my Pokémon out for a walk in the fields behind the Gym to get some fresh air. The gym was nearly finished and it was the just floors basement 1 to floor 3 left to finish, why these were left to last is beyond my knowledge but I’m quite sure there was a reason. After it was finished there was going to be a small party at Leah’s place; not only for the gym but also on her getting a new job as creative consultant for this new TV show called ‘The Mysteries of the Pokémon World’.

I was strolling along with Sceptile and Poliwrath while keeping a close eye on Snowl and Torterra (they have some problems with each other) when some girl came up to me. I say some girl but she looked a couple years older than me.

She spoke with a harsh tone. “I want a gym badge” And she held out her hand expecting me to give her one.
“Come on, make with the shiny shiny!”

I started to explain to her that she would need to battle me first but she didn’t listen and kept moaning at me to give her a gym badge. Poliwrath was noticeably annoyed at this fruitcake and – after Sceptile’s approval – violently shoved her and carried her over his shoulders into town. The girl was screaming and I pretended to look shocked but as soon as she was out of view Sceptile and I burst out into laughter. Gabite frowned in disapproval; ‘uptight ass’ I thought. I waited for Poliwrath to return and we continued the walk.

Snowl soon noticed a Tangela in the bushes. I didn’t have one and I thought it would love my garden, so I sent Gabite to attack. I let him fight on his own without command, he's very good at it and develops awesome combinations out of some moves. Snowl joined in the fight with Gabite after Tangela quickly constricted him.

Snowl used wing attack to set Gabite free, followed by an ice beam at Tangela. Tangela was frozen solid and Gabite saw this as an opportunity to hack and slash with dragon claw. Tangela broke free and wrapped Snowl and Gabite tightly using constrict. Snowl struggled uselessly while Gabite kept a level head.

I decided to give the command.
“Gabite! Slash yourself and Snowl free!” Tangela was knocked to the ground.
“Now, Snowl, use brave bird. Gabite, hop onto Snowl and follow the attack with Outrage.
The action was carried out seamlessly and Tangela had fainted. I threw an Ultra ball at Tangela and it was caught. Snowl circled the air in joy as the ball was sent to the gym.

I realised that I needed to get some exploration in over the next couple of days, because after Saturday, there won’t be many opportunities to travel Tezen.

Grammatically, the chapter is pretty much correct. :)

As far as your story goes, the only really gripping part was the final sentence, which adds suspense. The rest, however, is a collection of unrelated events, something that doesn't really grab attention. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it doesn't appear to be sculpting a plot or setting.

So, what I suggest is that you use this chapter to build up to either build up to that last sentence, develop the setting, develop the character, or a mixture of all three. The other thing I suggest is that you utilise imagery to better describe what the gym leader and his surroundings look like, as it is left primarily up to our imagination at the moment.

Hope I helped. :)

I should explain that really. A snowl is a pokemon native to the north of Tezen. It is, as the name implies, based upon an owl. It has very light powder blue toned feathers (but females sport slightly darker plumage on its wing tips) and a wingspan of two meters. It is an Ice/Flying type pokemon and is a personal favourite of Matt. The fanfic will feature quite a few new pokemon and i will go to more effort to describe them in in future.

Thanks for the comments, the next chapter will delve deep into the background of Zertinan City as well as Promethea Falls, both of which will be regular settings.

Chapter 2: My last days of Freedom - Promethea Falls

The day started in what would become the norm for the future. I was woken to the tune of Exodus 04 by my alarm and sprung out of bed. It was now safe to live in the living quarters at the back of the gym now that majority of the work was finished. I suppose I must say that the builders done a mighty job of moving my stuff. Its great having a 42 inch plasma parallel to your bed, which feels like an Altaria’s wings (I should look into that as it is remarkably similar). I’m sorry to brag but it really is ridiculously comfy.

I made some pancakes for breakfast. As I ate I noticed that yellow wallpaper isn’t a brilliant way to wake up and after some careful deliberation I decided to change the colour to a powder blue. I then realised what I was going to do that day and after looking at the clock I dashed for the shower, quickly grabbing a towel as I went. A brief hair conditioning and soap stuff was all I needed and I got dried and spent some time madly spiking my hair.

When I finished about five minutes later I slipped some socks and my size 10 trainers on and headed out to get some supplies from town. I walked down the littered streets of inner Zertinan, hoping to avoid one of its many tramps. The beautifully paved ground and the distance became much clearer. I could clearly see the department store in the distance. It was only because of its giant neon sign really, which even in the day is highly noticeable. Such a tall building would be a spectacle in any other city, but not in Zertinan. It is a beautiful city really, and the most of the tramps disappear after the rush hour is over and the go back to work; it’s just the current wave of fog makes the city look polluted, especially since its most dense in the centre of town.

Getting to the Department store meant walking around the Jirachi Fountain, named so because it is said that it grants wishes, supposedly it has done as well. Like most things spiritual however, I reckon it’s a load of tosh. Because it is Zertinan City, the fountain is insanely large and very fancy, and I couldn’t be bothered to walk around it because I was tired and just because im lazy. I grabbed my Great Ball (I didn’t need a great ball for capture but sometimes l like to colour code my Pokeballs to Pokémon types. Out of Pokéball came my Swampert, which leapt into the water causing a huge splash which I could guess angered quite a few businessmen who were late for work. I hopped onto Swampert who happily carried me to the other side of the fountain. She seemed happy but that may be because she has quite a sadistic sense of humour and enjoys annoying suits.

I entered the department store and recalled Swampert; they are quite touchy about letting Pokémon into the store unless they are guide Houndours or something like that. I took the lift straight to the 4th floor, where all the trainer supplies are kept and headed straight over to my usual supplies, namely full restores and max revives. I headed over to Melody, the Wednesday cashier, and handed her the goods.

“Hiya, tower! Wow, that’s even more supplies than usual Matt, going somewhere? She asked
“Yeah, you know I’ve taken over from Jewel as gym leader?” I responded
“Of course I do, it’s been all over the news you Muppet.”
“Well I decided to do a little exploring while I have the chance so I’m going the Safari Park near the Geothermal Centre, rumour is that Artemicia has been sighted nearby.” I answered.
“’Kay, have a good time, that’s 1000.99 please”

I handed her the money and headed out. I took out Snowl’s Pokéball and released him. I hopped on and asked him to take me to Promethea Falls. It wasn’t meant to be a very long journey, but when we was over Victory Road a bolt of light rushed past, just barely missing Snowls wing. I turned around and it was an agent of the MCD, a criminal organisation similar to your typical mafia. I told Snowl to use double team and I hid under its wings. Making sure I held on tight, I told Snowl to circle behind the drone and quickly use steel wing. The pack of Snowls responded and smashed into the robotic drone, just barely missing another bolt of energy.

At that moment, Aria, the Aurochilia City gym leader flew by on her Altaria, which used Dragon Breath, destroying the MCD beetle which fell into the ocean below.

She shouted over to me: “You okay”
‘Fine thanks” I replied.
“Hey, I recognise that stupidly deep voice, how are you Matt? I don’t think I've seen you since the Promethea Falls incident about six months ago!”
“That’s right, I remember. We had to shut down the transmitter controlling the hoard of Tauros.” I laughed. “As it happens, that’s where I’m headed at the moment, would you like to come with me”
“Gee, I’d love to, really, but I have to get back to my gym, there’s someone wanting a gym battle at 10:15, some other time maybe.” She answered, slightly annoyed.

Aria piloted Altaria to the slight left and sped off, shouting “Bye” as she went. I soon arrived at Promethea Falls; It was a quiet mountain village near the foot of Mount Otsukami. It has a colossal waterfall which leads into a relaxing hot spring. Buildings were sparse and build onto parts of the mountain. The Pokémon centre was even built into Mount Otsukami, with a back entrance leading deep into the caverns.

Despite its low level of activity, there are many rumours and myths associated with it, mostly involving the Zodiac Lords. I was looking at the Atmospear myth.

There is a large spear, dubbed the Gungnir by some, which is said to belong to Atmospear. The myth says that it become stuck in churned earth in a huge battle between its owner, Atmospear and the Taurus Lord, Titon; it was trapped when Titon used fissure while Atmospear lay on the ground with his spear in hand, trapping the spear in the ground and Atmospears spirit will be trapped inside the Gungnir until a trainer with inexplicable skill pulls the spear out with the help of his loyal Pokémon’s help. Atmospear would then challenge the trainer to a battle, hoping to be captured.

With relative ease, I pulled out the spear from the earth with help from Machamp and Hariama, What I assumed was Atmospear rose from the ground, grabbed the Gungnir and made a motion asking for a battle. A great storm surrounded the two of us, and without hesitation, I jumped into battle...
