I don't like it. I hated the ribbon interface (despite all the cries of "you'll like it when you get used to it," I still hate it after using it for a year on the university computers), and this is already similar, despite only being a prototype build. What I hate more is that I don't see any option to disable it. I don't mind developers trying out something new, but there should be an option to disable it if desired. I'll try it regardless, but if they don't make some serious changes or include an option to disable this thing, I'll probably wind up using outdated software or switching to a different product.

EDIT: It's ugly because it's a mid-fidelity prototype (basically alpha, they haven't worked on the pretty-factor yet). It'll look better when it's released, that's not what I'm worried about.

Wow, that is hideous. :(

I've always found Open Office rather... er... ugly and confusing and I imagine that'd just make it worse. Honestly that seriously just looks like some of my early ventures into Visual Basic, lmfao. I really hope some maaaajor improvements are made to that. I don't use OOo that often (if... ever) but mainly just for the sake of those that DO. Ick.

Ugly, hideous, appalling, awful, bad-looking, beastly, deformed, disfigured, foul, frightful, grisly, gross, grotesque, hard-featured, hideous, homely, horrid, ill-favored, loathsome, misshapen, monstrous, not much to look at, plain, repelling, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, unbeautiful, uncomely, uninviting, unlovely, unprepossessing, unseemly, unsightly thing is all of those.
:(

Oh also, shout-out to my homies at Thesaurus.com, yo. XD

Anyways, that thing looks pretty bad, though. I don't care for MS Office's ribbon interface much, but it's much better than this. At least MS knows how to do it.

I hope this gets fixed.

The people saying it is "ugly" are either not reading the part about it being a mid-fidelity prototype or simply not understanding it. I'm sure even if they don't make many core changes, it'll still look pretty; I'm not worried about that, and you shouldn't be, either.

Seriously, twocows said it was in intial alpha form and they hadn't tried to make it look nice. 2007 looks nice because it's modelled on the Aero theme. This mockup is based on the incredibly ugly SilverXP theme, which is probably what the programmer is running. If it is able to integrate with it's native OS themer, then we can see it with Aero or GTK, etc.

^^This.

I'm probably the only one who has both looked past the inital appearance and likes the new layout. It's similar to the Ribbon interface for a good reason. All software evolves together. Do you think it's a coincidence that all OSs look a similar to each other as they do? We are in an age where everything is moving towards icons and visual interfaces. Everything is using docks and icons are getting bigger, while text is getting less noticeable. I think it's personally reasonable for Sun to take this in the same direction as the rest of the software market. It's not entirely copying an idea, it's sticking to the market standards to meet the needs of more users.

By the way. People. Hate. Change.

One improve that I think is worth suggesting, and I think they'll do it, is to implement options to drastically and easily rearrange the interface, or revert it to the old style for those who want to.

Good Job, OOo.
