One day, my sis tried to re-enable the Windows XP Welcome Screen and fast user switching, when she got an error message, telling her that 'a change in the file Msgina.dll is causing a problem... blah blah blah, welcome screen and fast user switching cannot be enabled'. So, she does a search for Msgina.dll, and moves it from C:\WINDOWS\system32 and puts it onto the desktop. She tries to enable the welcome screen again, and gets another error message, this time telling her that a file named Msgina1.dll is causing a problem. She finds that file in \system32 and moves it onto the desktop as well (if you're wondering why I know so much about what she did, it's because she told me afterwards). She restarts the computer, hoping that the welcome screen will be enabled again. Instead, she gets a very un-welcoming error message.

"The Logon User Interface DLL
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msgina1.dll failed to load.
Contact your system administrator to replace the DLL or restore the original DLL."

All I need to do is move the DLLs back to system32 from the desktop, but how can I do that if I can't even login!
I tried restoring the operating system with some XP disks, but since the file system is FAT32 and not NTFS, it doesn't seem to want to show the option to repair it.

HELP. PLEASE.

Pro-tip: Keep one PC for you and another for a sibling.

If you still have the XP Installation disc, set your BIOS to boot from CD and insert your XP Installation disk. If I remember correctly there is an option somewhere to repair an installation.

Neither one of you can login? :/ If at least one of you could log in to their account then you could use the System Restore program..

If not then.. you could try this.

Restart the computer.

While it's restarting, hit F8 multiple times, that should trigger the Advanced Options menu for Windows.. once it's on screen you can use the arrow keys/enter button since the mouse isn't on screen. One of the options that should be on the list is ' Last Known Good Configuration ', which works much like a system restore.

If that works it'll restore the system to the safe point before the error occurred. >.>

It's worth a shot, although hopefully someone can give you a better answer if it doesn't work.

Load into a live environment and move the files back into System32. The desktop on XP is in two user profiles in Documents and Settings: All Users and your personal profile.

I will try this. Thanks.
I tried booting in safe mode and everything and it still shows the error message. When I start up from an XP disk, it loads everything, then comes up with the partition selection screen. It shows my partition, but there is no option to repair it. I tried SP2 and SP3 disks and there is no option to repair it. I tried the 'convert partition to NTFS' (because the file system is FAT32), and it shows a progress bar and 'checking file system' for a while, and when it completes it restarts my computer. I still get the error message and no logon screen. When I booted from the XP disk again, the file system was still FAT32! I'm going to try GParted to convert the file system. Maybe the XP disk only repairs NTFS systems...

remember that changing the filesystem erases the drive and any files on it. I would advise just booting into a live cd and moving the DLLs back manually and then restarted XP to recover any files/ programs you want before changing the filesystem.

You can also try your hand at using the Recovery Console.

Load the Windows XP CD and enter the recovery console by booting with the CD, use an online guide on commands and using the Recovery Console.

Be warned though, you may make the situation worse.

Another Solution (apart from the virtual environment) is if you have partitions, install Windows XP on those, copy the file to the correct place from the other Windows XP, then format the partition with the windows xp you dont need.

You can also take out hard drive and use it as a slave drive, but its quite complicated as you have to open up the computer.

If you have access to a second computer, move the hard drive that contains the Windows petition to the second computer as a slave hard drive and boot the second computer. After installing the hard drive you should be able to move the file back into the correct position. After that uninstall the hard drive from the second computer and return it to the origional computer. It should now boot correctly. To prevent this from happening again give your sister an account without administrator privileges.

As others suggested, I'd boot in with a live CD and move the file back to C:\Windows\system32

Since you're using XP, you'll find the desktop under C:\Desktop and Settings\(username)\Desktop

I'd suggest using the UBCD4WIN for more familiar file navigation, but even an Ubuntu CD/DVD, Knoppix, PCLinuxOS, etc....will do the job, as long as it has the option for a Live CD.

I got into a Kubuntu live environment and fixed the problem with quite a bit of difficulty (the computer kept freezing every time I tried to rename msgina.dll to msgina1.dll), but none the less it's all good now. Thanks for giving me the idea, it really saved me a lot of trouble from my aunt!
