Okay I have a 720p HDTV in my room and I am going through a housewide process of enhancing video quality where it can be done. I already installed component cables on the TV in the family room with the HD Cable box and I am very happy with the wuality. That is a 1080p TV.

My first question is: Can any 3 RCA cables be used for the component outputs and inputs? I know I can do this with the composite but not sure about the component.

The thing is I don't have an HD Box in my room and I use TiVo Series 2 which doesn't have HD support. So I am wondering if the use of S-video cables would at all enhance the video quality. The TiVo supports S-video input and output and the cable box supports S-video output.

My second question is: Does the use of S-video show any noticeable improvement in picture quality?

S-Video should be better than your standard Yellow Composite cable, but not as good as an Component. I can't see why you couldn't mix and match Component Cables. Maybe you'd want to check an alternative source, but they're transmitting a very similar signal, so I'd assume the build would be the same.

When you can, go with HDMI, but obviously you can't with the Tivo.

This is a little dated, but it should help to clarify some things:

Thanks! I have noticed improved recording quality because I use a good S-video cable from the Set top box to the TiVo but the other one I have that came with my video card is just terrible so I will end up buying another one from Best Buy or cablesforless.com I will try the component thing with my DVD player later on today. TiVo HD and Series 3 are the only ones that work with component and HDMI. Plus they use CableCards so I would like that even more. But for now I have a Series 2 TiVo so S-Video will work. Thanks for the advice!
