All this talk of old school games like pokemon crystal and stadium has got me thinking about a question for all of you lovely shiny hunters. Several pokemon have had their shiny forms changed over the generations, or appear different in spin-off games like Colosseum. Sometimes the change is barely noticeable, at others times it's quite dramatic. I was wondering if there are any shinies from the past that you miss?

I always liked the way that shiny espeon looked in Stadium 2, more of pale sage, smoky, iridescent color, and wish that this was the shiny it had in games today. I don't like the broccoli-colored shiny.

I also liked the old GSC sprites from Umbreon a bit more, even though shiny Umbreon is still striking, the blue markings were just more intense, closer to indigo, and it's eyes also changed color too.

My favorite shiny in past games would be Typhlosion. Its visually less interesting in newer games. As for the opposite, I prefer newer shiny Rapidash more than the original. Here is a comparison of them:

Anyway, I found my first random full odds shiny in Let's Go Eevee. It was a wild Seel in Seafoam Islands. I barely noticed it! I also hunted for my first chain-combo one, a shiny Staryu. This took so long to chain that I am honestly discouraged from shiny hunting in Let's Go. My preferred methods are soft reset, breeding, or chaining. Here's my little Staryu:

Not a fan of most of the Stadium alt. Shinies, but some of them are neat. Espeon, Scyther, the Cubone line, Forretress, Teddiursa, and Fearow are among my faves. Can't say I'm particularly impressed with any of the Colosseum/XD alt. Shinies, though Caterpie looks pretty wild.

Comparing GSC sprites to modern Shiny colors, I think I prefer the original Shiny Blastoise, Raichu, Sandshrew, Kangaskhan, Eevee, Omanyte, Kabuto, and Misdreavus. (Nothing against modern Shiny Eevee, I just favor the darker grey because it makes me think of my cat.)

Just found out in Pokemon Battle Revolution you can shiny hunt for a Pokemon costume. Its 1/8192 odds and is pretty tedious as you have to battle 5 trainers(3 Pokemon each) each shiny check. The final trainer is wearing a Pokemon costume that can be shiny and you get it as a prize once defeating them.

After knocking out 60 Girafarig and running around checking every one in the little area off the Pokemon center I found a full odds shiny Stuky. Then later on found my Girafarig.

The next day I knocked out 60 Tauros and 60 Girafarig with no luck.

Today I decided to move on and as I was leaving the area I still was checking spawns and found a full odds shiny Phanpy. Glad it was in a horde as that made it really stand out.

I accidentally ran into its friend so had to watch it run away as I got to the run button but managed to encounter it before it despawned.

Only recently got Scarlet. Just beat the main story yesterday and stumbled upon this today while grinding for raids:

Spoiler:

It was almost invisible in the cave. Fortunately, the light blue petals popped just enough to make me do a double take.

Named her Chion after bulbous "glory-of-the-snow" flowers (Chionodoxa). Now I just have to wait for some Ice dens to spawn so I change her Tera type to Ice!

On March 21st, 2022, I was scaling the slopes of Mount Coronet in the fleeting rays of the late afternoon sun. My Brilliant Diamond campaign was coming along marvelously, although I had yet to find a shiny.

Suddenly, I saw an unusually-colored creature attack me on the snowy mountain - a green Bronzong!

My heart dropped, and I gasped in astonishment! A shiny during my main play of a game, without specifically hunting one? Could it be?

The green looked really striking in contrast to Bronzong's normal purplish-blue, and I thought that this was a really cool shiny! I threw a Ball, and when Bronzong popped back out, I didn't see any sparkles or stars swirling about, but I couldn't remember whether that only happens at the beginning of an encounter and I just wasn't paying attention, or whether it happens every time they come out of a Ball. It probably wouldn't shine after every failed capture attempt, right?

I tossed another Ball and captured my shimmering green hunk of metal, and I proceeded to face Dialga (and enjoy the greatest battle music in all of Pokémon during the climactic confrontation atop Mount Coronet!). When I returned to my PC Boxes, I checked out that nifty green Bronzong I had captured...

...and it wasn't shiny at all!!!!!!!! :pink_disbelief: It turns out that green Bronzong aren't shinies - he just has the cool distinction of looking green in the late afternoon, for a cool time-of-day specialty that makes him appear totally different based on the light refraction or whatever, "lol!" I later confirmed this a few months later by watching some Bronzong in Legends: Arceus (greatest Pokémon game of all time??) as the day shifted to afternoon, and sure enough, they all turned green!!!! :disbelief:

Later on in Legends: Arceus I found a shiny Heracross and in one of those massive mass outbreaks, a shiny Ursaring. They both had research level 10 when I found them.

I'd also like to give a huge congrats to Maserati for finding the first shiny of GenIX!!!!!!! And a shout-out to icycat for a prolific year of successful shiny hunts and being the 2022 Shiny Hunter MVP, "lol!"

Welcome to all the new members and may we have many more years of shiny hunting triumphs here at the SHC!!! May all your Bronzong be shiny, and not nefarious green deceivers!!!!

I didn't know that about Bronzong! How deceptive! D:<

Stumbled across a full-odds Maschiff the other day and lost a random Veluza to Final Gambit. Currently bouncing between Snivy (Black 2) and Skrelp/Dragalge (Scarlet) hunts.

EDIT: Glimpsed and caught a Shiny Gogoat on the shore while hunting Skrelp/Dragalge. And a Lokix...

UPDATE: Got my handsome blue snek! <3

Gonna name him Tuck whenever I reach the name rater. From Kentucky, because "blue grass snake" sounds similar to "Bluegrass State."

With Bank supposedly becoming free next month, I've been trying for a moth Pokémon that I can transfer to AS in an effort to make my Secret Base team more "me." Honestly would've preferred using Mothim here, but I figured hunting something new would be more worthwhile and I've been interested in Shiny Venomoth for a long time.

Caught as Venonat.

I considered naming him Philenor (or Phil for short) after the toxic "blue swallowtail," but I liked Caelus—another name for Uranus—more. After the butterfly-like "Uranus moths" that probably inspired Venomoth.

My jaw dropped at the good fortune I had on Pokemon Shield. It happened at the start of this week. I was breeding for shiny Dreepy, and hatched a shiny on only the 90th egg! Of course I was happy about, but was so stunned to register the excitement, I just gasped and double-checked in disbelief a few times, and sat there in silent awe, before gathering my wits and saving the game-- I saved 4 or 5 times just to be sure that i had. This appeared so fast that it feels like a dream. I am looking forward to watching this cool dragon lady turn into a shiny Dragapult. I am changing the name of the dreepy that fathered her to SonofHeaven, like the emperor, to honor this pokemon's greatness for bringing this shiny into the world.

March Madness, awesome! I'd like to join. I am currently soft resetting for a shiny Latios in Alpha Sapphire and shiny Reshiram in Omega Ruby.

I've caught at least about 30 shiny Pokemon in Violet since it was released. I feel like it's tooooo easy to obtain shinies in S/V, but they are fun to obtain nonetheless. Some of my favorites include Scizor, Weavile, Azumarill, Gogoat, Dragapult, and some of the Violet Paradox forms.

I actually started making a Google Doc spreadsheet compiling my shiny Pokemon. Roughly half of my ~200 shinies come from Pokemon Go.

My Shiny luck has been rotten this month, but Bank/Transporter recently became free so I took the opportunity to migrate some of my older Shinies to the 3D games (cloning anything I might want to keep using in the 2D games ahead of time). My Shiny pastry Quilava has finally joined my Shiny ice cream Vanillite in Kalos and my Shiny Servine has a new home in Alola. I also renewed my HOME subscription to see if any of my favorite Shinies transferrable to SWSH were "Glistening." Star sparkles from Magneton, star sparkles from Tyrogue, stars from Omanyte... it was looking grim, then Luxio did this:

Wow, what an amazing month!! Congrats on the terrific shiny run - you really earned the March Madness championship!! That's what a resounding victory looks like, "lol!"

And I was actually thinking about clarifying the end dates in the post, but then I decided against it, haha! I can't believe you actually noticed, but I thought I could sneak that one by y'all, hahahahaha! But all your shinies count - the contest was for the month of March, inclusive! Like, we're using [1,31] as our dataset instead of (1,31). Closed brackets, ReKoil!! :pink_tongue:

Nice job again on that March Madness championship!! You had some stiff competition, but the heart of a hunter shone through!!

As for me, I've been staying with my parents for the past few months while I look for a new job, so I haven't actually set up my Switch here at home in Boston, haha! I've been playing some other games lately like LEGO Skywalker Saga, Civilization VI, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Stellaris, but I'm really looking forward to playing the new Pokémon gen once I finally move into a new apartment and get my Switch set up again!!

The rates are set up a bit weird though. I'm sure this animation was meant to be the rarer variation, but many occasions have it flipped around, like standard wild encounters and Virtual Console transfers. Here's a chart that breaks down the odds: https://lincoln-lm.github.io/JS-Finder/Tools/SquareTable.html

Currently, these differences can only be seen in SWSH (Arceus and SV only have one sparkle animation). I can only assume that they dropped it because they botched it the first time around.

I haven't transferred all of my Shinies, and not all of my Shinies are even transferable to SWSH so I can check, but Akira (Luxio) and Codec (Porygon2) are my only 1/65,536's that I know of.

Hello, everyone! Time for my periodic check-in (read: stopping by once every few years). I hope all your hunts have been fruitful and will continue to be so.

I've picked up a fair amount of Shinies in my absence. Only three stand out as noteworthy, and only one would be accepted by SHC's classic rules:

<A random, unnamed Shiny Rotom at Mt. Coronet in PLA>
In the modern era, where Shiny rates are (or can be made) absolutely silly, this one stands out as being rare. The zone has only 2-3 natural spawn points for the Pokémon and refreshing them is tedious. I don't own a Switch, so the image below is an emulator screenshot.

---------------------------------------------
<Skichip, a chained Shiny Trapinch on Route 228 in Pearl>
PokéRadar Shinies are normally not worth mentioning, but anyone who's hunted Trapinch knows it's an exception — Route 228 is under a constant sandstorm that heavily impacts visibility, making this hunt a real test of focus. My chain broke not long after, leaving me with a single Shiny Trapinch. I didn't mind, but it would've been fun to give spares to friends.

---------------------------------------------
<Caradell, a random Shiny Swellow in the first room of Mistralton Cave in Black>
Alarm bells are probably going off in your head at this claim. The answer is simple — I was emulating a randomised copy of Black.

I caught Caradell at Lvl 31, so, were the ROM not randomised, he would've instead been a Boldore or Axew. I could determine which one of those two he was and fix the species with PKHeX, but something made me decide not to: many, many years ago, I had a dream where I encountered a gigantic Shiny Swellow on a mountainside rocky path. Now, at least a decade later, I ran into that exact Shiny in a cave. Even if it's naughty to leave the species alone, the coincidence was too good to ruin. I adjusted his encounter information and moveset to be normal, kept the Mistralton Cave "hatch" location as a keepsake, then transferred him to my Black cartridge.

---------------------------------------------
Wait, what's this? There's a fourth Shiny? I kept the best for last, ladies and gentlemen.

Old members may remember a very greedy hunt I embarked on in 2012. I wanted a specific nature, as many perfect (not necessarily 31) IVs as possible, and, for a particular reason I will explain after the picture, to get the Shiny in either Gen III or IV. Masuda Method does not exist in Gen III, so the best combination to hit all my goals was to breed in HeartGold/SoulSilver, which is exactly what I did. But there was a catch: Masuda Method is mutually exclusive with the Everstone in Gen IV, so the Shiny odds were still the full 1/8192!

And so an on-and-off (very much mostly off) hunt began; yesterday, 11 years of real time and around 600 hours of in-game time later, it finally ended. By my time measurements, I went through approximately 11077 eggs. I got the Shiny, the Everstone worked, and the two inherited IVs not controlled by my Power item were ones I wanted (missed out on 31 Speed but got 0 Defense and 31 Special Defense). Crazy!

Here's the nearly-flawless success: <Kinza, the Lonely Shiny Nincada>

Continuing from before, here's the reason I chose Gen III/IV: these two gens have a glitch that gives Shedinja the Ninjask moves Nincada learns on the level it evolves. You can do this with every Ninjask move, but the relevant ones are Swords Dance (evolving at Lvl 25) and Baton Pass (evolving at Lvl 45). Sadly, Game Freak did not grandfather these moves into Shedinja's movepool in Gen V and beyond, so they trip hack checks; I won't be able to transfer my to-be Swords-Dance Shedinja to Gen VI unless I either inject it into a save (what I will do) or erase the offending move before sending it up (obviously not doing that, especially since I like keeping copies of my Pokémon in older gens).

Hopefully I didn't hog too much space with this post; I shrank the resolution of the images as much as I could while keeping them readable.

Thanks for reading and see you around!

First up the third Heavy Ball Roggenrola leftover from my Roggenrola breed from April, which has evolved into Boldore:
Spoiler:

I definitely don't regret putting this breed on pause on March 31st in favor of getting some Sandwich shinies in Violet. I obtained my second Shiny Roggenrola @ 2250 eggs back in March.

Shiny Roggenrola #3: 4400 eggs total. Got it while I was still breeding up boxes during the first 50 eggs so I stopped breeding and just hatched what I already had =P
Definitely wouldn't have had that in 1 day on March 31st since I nearly doubled the egg count from Shiny Roggenrola #2 🙄

Camp image of the happy family, united at last:
Spoiler:

After that I popped a Dream Ball Magmar into the Daycare with the intent of getting a single one shiny and evolving it into Magmortar. However after evolving the shiny Magby into Magmar and sending it to Legends so I can easily evolve it there by just using a Magmarizer on it omitting the need to trade, I looked at Magmar there before I evolved it and actually really liked it's shiny as well. So then I had to have two =P

Spoiler:

Shiny Magby #1: 750 eggs
Shiny Magby #2: 850 eggs total. Yep, it hatched while still breeding up my boxes in the round after the previous one. Gotta love a quick shiny breed =D

Camp image of the pink fire types:
Spoiler:

If I were to breed a Shiny Magby to keep as a Magby I'd want it in a different ball so this shiny breed is done, given that this line is not one I consider a favorite.
I merely bred both Magmar and Magmortar in a Dream Ball because someone showed me a shiny Dream Ball Magmortar once and I've wanted it ever since =P

Anyway, next shiny hunt will be Safari Ball Eevee so I can finally knock off one of the two eeveelutions I still need to shiny breed: Leafeon.

Thanks everyone for participating in some March Madness! It was super exciting see all these dazzling shinies from g-money to icycatelf, twilightblade, Runasutaru and maserati777 throughout spring.

When the shiny hunters club won club of the season G-Money the prize was a choice of shiny pokemon. G kindly opted to gift that opportunity to a member for the recent contest, instead of taking any pokemon for himself. Writing to let everybody know about his generous workings and that Rekoil has since chosen a cool shiny Trevenant for his prize. The white and amber tree now resides with him.

While we are talking ghost pokemon. I wanted to add that I caught myself a shiny dusclops a little while ago. I wasn't even synchronizing, but it has an ideal impish nature. For now i call it Red Lantern, inspired by the film Raise the Red Lantern.

Trying to decide whether it should evolve into Dusknoir or stay a Dusclops. Dusclops has better defenses with eviolite. Dusknoir has the leeway to hold other items though and has better attack stats. Dusclops has a red shiny that's more bold, Dusknoir is subtler and kinda gray blue. Which way do i go?
