So, as webmasters, I'm just wondering, what would some of you look for in a good gaming CMS? Just picking up some ideas that you might see in a new gaming CMS sometime soon. ;)

So far I suppose we're going to work out a game rating system, so any features you'd like to see in such a system would be appreciated as well.

Just some thoughts on a game rating system:

A game rating system would have to be flexible - that is, the webmaster could choose "single rating" or "category rating". With "single rating", the webmaster would simply give an overall rating. With "category rating", the webmaster would set categories which (s)he would judge each game by, and then the system would calculate the average and give it an overall score. (Also, with such a system, it might be a good idea to allow the webmaster to give a weighting to the category for the calculation of the overall score.)

It would also be good if the webmaster were able to set what each rating is out of, and whether half-marks are allowed.

If I think of anything else (either game rating or general features), I'll post again. :)

EDIT: Hooray, 1234th post~ :D

Thanks a bunch for the feedback. Should an option be added for Auto-Calculate or Self-Add for the overall score?

You're welcome. ^^

That makes sense. That way, if the webmaster decides to have some uber-complex calculation system, then (s)he still has the option to use it.

Also, you might want to give them an option with auto-calculating the average: one option could auto-calculate the mean, another could auto-calculate the median.

Well, I don't think the median is really necessary, but the mean is probably the method we'll be using, rounding to the nearest 10th with the decimal system. We haven't quite worked out the specifics, but we know we're going to have a rating / review system.

I was thinking about a cheats system, but then again that could just be created through our custom page creator in the system.

If you wanted, in a page creator you could have a selection of templates to use, one of which could be "custom HTML", another which could be "cheats", another which could be "walkthrough", et cetera. There's certainly no harm in adding templates for commonly used or expected pages for a game site. ^^

That's actually quite a good idea that I hadn't thought about yet. Thanks, it'll definitely be implemented.

Another thing I thought of for the rating system is to give the webmaster an option to separate "editor's rating" and "reader's rating". It's done to great effect on some software download sites.

That is to say, in addition to allowing the webmaster the option to rate the game, members of the site are also given that same option, and then their ratings compiled into a "reader's rating". You should probably allow the webmaster to set a minimum number of required reader's ratings for an overall reader's rating to be compiled (so that the first one in can't sabotage accuracy.)

You could also develop that with a "was this rating helpful?" system, where a reader can increase their weight on an overall reader's average if their ratings are generally viewed as intelligent/helpful.

I'm still looking to get some suggestions for this. ;)
