I had a dream, golden and sweet
Girls and boys on white horses rode out to meet
me, and I held out my arm
She tied a white ribbon around it
clean like a vaccination
or a tourniquet,
though there was no blood yet.

And if you went down with your name on your chest
and a cloth-marked elbow:
would there be release?
Would you rest in one piece?
Would you mean any more to this earth that turns,
puts its children in urns.

does it remember them after they're gone?
I'd say,
but I would be wrong.

I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing.
