If it's something I like, or use a lot, I value it more than other things. Perhaps not the right answer, but it's my thought process. If I had to choose between working for something and getting a gift, I'd say gifts are worth more to me, because other people took their time to make so much money, just to buy something for me. It makes me feel special. =) This is still excepting daily-use things I bought myself.

The wording of the question tells me to choose the second option. :3

Anything that I work hard to achieve, especially through a significant amount of adversity, will be more valuable to me than something that was just given to me.

I'm currently struggling to pay my way through school, and I think that when I'm done, I'll appreciate my education that much more than the lucky people who won grants or had parents wealthy enough to afford to pay it themselves. :D

Yeah. I agree with you there buddy. I too will value something that I have earned by doing hard work for it. I believe that the happiness, that you recieve after you've successfully accomplished a really hard task by working hard for it, is....a feeling that is incomparable to any other feeling.. It feels so fantastic. Its like we experience a sense of pride in ourself or something. :P

And Its not that I don't value gifts. Gifts are things which symbolises love and I always keep the gifts given to me, out of love, close to my heart. :)

If it was a video game, i wouldn't care if it was given to me or hard work. XD
anything else depends what i get

Ceteris paribus, the latter.

I would hazard a guess that most people would think the same way, because of the reward systems in our brain, designed to reward us for achievement (conversely, if we felt the same pleasure from having gifts brought to us, there would be less incentive to adapt and compete, thereby evolving).

If we agree that one gets their family for free, then I'd go with family.
The most valuable thing you own is that. A family. It helps us shaped our characteristics.

If you mention a thing, it'll be my plants. Seeing them bloom(especially for my cactuses) makes me feel good since I've grown them.

It depends on the significance of the gift. If it was from someone dear to me that they gave for a certain reason, then I'd value it over something I'd worked for, if that makes sense.

My memories. We all should want our past experiences. I threw away most of mine long ago and it was the worst mistake of my life... I forgot my past friends, ideas, and dispotions on life. If I could get those important memories back, even if it means I would lose everything else... I would stop at nothing to remember them. They are far more value to me now more than anything and will always be. That is what I would want.

This is hard. I guess it depends on what it is that I was wanting.

Right now, the material object that means the most to me is my phone, which I wanted for a very long time. I got that from my grandfather and father because I had been promised it for Christmas as a present but never got it. I suppose this would categorize in between getting it for free and earning it because my father and grandfather were very proud of me for making a decision that took me a very long time to make and was difficult for me to do.

I'm sure it would mean more to me if I bought it with my own money, though. But it wouldn't have made a difference how much it means to me if I just randomly asked for it and some stranger gave it to me or anything. So, in the end, it depends on what it is and how badly I wanted it.

Something I worked hard for will always be the most satisfying.

If I study hard for a test and get a 100%, then I'm pleased more. If I earn money (which I do) to purchase a book or something else, I know that I worked hard to get it and appreciate it more. :>

Getting things for free is nice too, but definitely holds less value depending on whether the item is special to me or not.
