Everyone here will tell you Windows 7 is better, and I won't contradict them. I personally prefer Vista, but that's because I've used it for so long. Get 7, especially if it's cheaper; it'll last you longer.

I honestly prefer Vista, since it seems simpler than 7 (except for if you run a lot of .exe programs, in which case you'll be covered from head to toe with security alerts.)

Are you getting this through an institution of some kind? Those places usually get discounts on the newer OSs.

I am currently running 7. It is smaller, smoother, and in my opinion more aesthetically pleasing. The biggest difference is going to be in the look of the OS. If you find your current system to be operating smoothly, and are not too worried about the look of it, stick with Vista for now. If you want to check out 7, there wont be any problem. All of the drivers i needed to stay functioning are already out for 7, or function even though they are labeled for Vista.

It's really a judgment call.

no is because i bought a hp laptop so theyre letting me get it for about £22. but winndows 7 home premium on the microsoft site is about 79.99 and vista home premium is £166.37
Microsoft must just be anticipating higher sales for 7.

At this point, it's really a matter of personal preference for you. ;)

Go with Windows 7, Not only does it have a smaller resource footprint than Vista, but it actually has some good upgrades, such as Homegroup and it (by default) allows you to adjust the level of UAC. You're probably not going to get another windows Upgrade at that price, and you'll be much better off, compatibility-wise, in a few years when they get around to releasing Windows 8.

I've been using Windows 7 for at least 6 months now and the EUE (end-user experience) has been fantastic.
It's so much smoother than Vista and the boot times are rediculously small (takes me under 10 seconds to boot and shutdown).
It works well with all of my applications, some of which required fixes/updates, but they still work.
I am able to fully work with Office 2010 (shhhhh) and Office 2007.
What's even better is all of the new keyboard shortcuts, they're now innovatively worked in with the windows button, WinowsKey+P etc.
So, go with Win7, it's far better.
(And it has a wide range of sample wallpapers that are amazingg).
