I think it has lots to do with how people consume media nowadays. Studios aren't willing to put effort and money into something that it's not really appealing to general audiences and guaranteed profit, especially with the economic crisis. That's why movies are being produced more scarcely now, and most of them are sequels or boy-meets-girl, lotsaexplojuns, blood baths or children's movies (hey, Rocky VII is being produced! I wonder how I feel about that).
