Let's leave Clerks 2 out of this, shall we?
I don't find the names to be unoriginal or lame or anything. The gym leader names are, in my opinion, a way to know what you're about to face. For instance, the gym sign in front of Brawly's gym says something about a crashing wave. Okay? My first time through, I thought that meant it was a water gym. I found out the leader's name was Brawly, so I redid my logic on that one. Most of them are real names, too. Brock, Misty, Blaine...I could go on. I don't mind them being that way. And for the record, the name Erica really has nothing to do with grass types. It's just a name. Marley has nothing to do with fighting types...and Fantina makes me think of Fanta. Not
all of them tell you their type.
As for the "unimaginative" Pokemon names, I think the simplicity is nice. Krabby the crab, Muk the muk, Butterfree the butterfly, etc. It's cute and catchy.
