10 years, advanced games, such cool features. And yet, THEY STILL CAN'T BE CREATIVE WITH THE NAMES. I know, they work hard, and probably get a kick out of the crappy name-puns, but would it be satanic to have a grass gym-leader named Daniel?

Pokemon is probably well-known for its failing plot-devices, which would make me happy if they could fix. I just don't get it- at LEAST name them after members of your team (at least the american ones, since you all are oh-so racist when it comes to their names)

I hope others will come to agree :3

I actually like their names, even if they're a pun of what type they train

I mean the names are created are accutally creative. Before pokemon I never even heard of a Misty. At my Middle School theres about 11 Daniels,so that a pretty common name.

Yeah, have to agree with Chaos. Their lame puns makes them Nintendo's! Plus it's better then having the elite four champion being called Daniel.

I know, but my point is it's a bit annoying for most of them to have terrible puns. If I could, I would stab wordplay with a solid dagger of my annoyance. And even if they're "unique", just taking casual elemental-based words and adding a letter or two to make it sound like a name starts to tick me off >_>

I mean, I don't care if their names may have something to do with their elements, but really:

ROaRK? bROCK? candICE? Doesn't really sound all that creative (and well, at least one's a real name :/)

I would be fine if it just vaguely related to the element, but really. I don't need their name to tell me what their freaking element is. And, I don't care if they're the most ridiculous names in the world, just a little different. Sure, I guess it was kinda funny, and cute, back in Red+Blue, but at this point, I'm thinking "OMFG seriously???" whenever I see a stupid pun for their names.

And, I guess it would be nice to break the racism by adding a few foreign names to the trainers every once-in-a-while. Not to sound politically correct, of course.

First of all (with no offense intended), people like you bug me. You have to find something wrong with fun. Most people find names like that fun. If every character was named Zac, or any variation of it (there are 3 in-game trainers in DPPt), or Daniel, or Jason, or Bob (which may make a funny water gym leader name...), the game would end up getting repetitive and boring. And I think they do it mostly to put a slight nostalgia factor in the games.
Also, the names have been ebbing since RBY, so they're not AS noticeable as they could be. Honestly, until you pointed it out, I had not noticed Candice's. The names have sort of faded into the background. Plus, it's not even a major part of the game, so there's no reason for you to get upset or angry about it.

As so why there are no international names or characters in the game, I don't know. Again, not something many people notice. But the only non-American character has been Brock, and he's something like Chinese. But Jynx is black, so stfu.

Agree 100%, tbh I always hoped for a character named Ezekiel... or Pillowpants.

Those puns are pretty bad.

I'm not asking for over-used boring names- I don't care if we get a Felipe or Barenziah from time to time.

And, I guess that they're SORTA getting better, but it's a major plot hole that they were born with names that represent the types of pokemon they would grow up to train. But then again, pokemon has more plot-holes than Postal 2.

You gotta be kidding me, right? Did you read the OP, I was talking about how the puns in POKEMON were bad. Why would I want names that I thought were bad?

I'll admit you did.

But seriously ever since I saw Clerks 2, I always wanted a character in pokemon to be called pillowpants. It's just so awesome.

Forgive me, but having a Gym Leader's name as a pun of the type is MORE creative than just giving them plain names? I know iut would be more realistic, but this is a game we're dealing with here. I don't get what you are trying to say.

Besides, I'm moving this to General as it encompasses more than one generation.

But remember, the game's Japanese, and the original names are all Japanese too. There aren't any international names 'cause the US translation is localized for North Americans. There are a few other language versions out there though, right? German and such? I wonder if they have such punny names too. I imagine so.

Anyway, I like the puns myself, though I must be a little thick because I never even caught on to Brock/Roark/Candice/etc until just now. Of course some like Misty and Brawly are obvious even to me!

I would like to see how they do their translation/localization process though, see how they come up with the names and why some get picked over others. That kind of thing can be interesting.

The only plot hole fillers for that are Brock and roark's dads are/were that type gym leader plus Roark's dad's name is Brian so

I agree with those guys who say the names are imaginative. It adds to the surrealism of pokemon. I mean, when you see things like Psyduck, which could be racist against ducks, it's obvious if pokemon becomes politically correct, it'll be dead. So give over.

It would take creativity for them to come up with the Pokemon, their names, and the region. I can't even make my own Fakemon, THAT'S 0 creativity.

Let's leave Clerks 2 out of this, shall we?

I don't find the names to be unoriginal or lame or anything. The gym leader names are, in my opinion, a way to know what you're about to face. For instance, the gym sign in front of Brawly's gym says something about a crashing wave. Okay? My first time through, I thought that meant it was a water gym. I found out the leader's name was Brawly, so I redid my logic on that one. Most of them are real names, too. Brock, Misty, Blaine...I could go on. I don't mind them being that way. And for the record, the name Erica really has nothing to do with grass types. It's just a name. Marley has nothing to do with fighting types...and Fantina makes me think of Fanta. Not all of them tell you their type.

As for the "unimaginative" Pokemon names, I think the simplicity is nice. Krabby the crab, Muk the muk, Butterfree the butterfly, etc. It's cute and catchy.

So which Gym Leader's name represents their names other than Bugsy. I don't really see any of their names being bad puns. OMG Maylene sounds just like something to do with Fighting Pokemon, I definitely see where you're getting this.

They're very creative in my opinion and they're not lame puns due to the fact that they are subtle. you don't notice the pun unless you actively think about it.

Besides, 24 out of 35 of them are real names, a.k.a. the majority. If you open up last names (especially considering Lt. Surge's is no doubt a last name) then you'd get even more.

Urrgh over plot repeating this also comes in . BUMMER !

Ok , I know they are stupid with the names but what , would they put KID names like Ziggy on a Leader (hope not) . Or even teen names (like... DANIEL ) on champions ? Still no creativity...

There are no 'kid' names or 'teenager' names, people don't just change their names at certain points of their life. Sure, there can be 'old' names and 'new' names, but that's different.

But the thing is, random names are thrown around for all sorts of random trainers. They could easily do that for Gym Leaders too. The reason they don't isn't because they have no creativity.
