Because something someone said in the other thread (Kinder-hookers or whatever it's called lol) sparked this memory.

Today at school, the morning announcements that most people usually tune out: "Oh yeah there's gonna be a Halloween costume contest Friday at lunch, categories are cutest scariest funniest etc. Bring your best but make sure to follow the dress code: no masks, weapons, or crossdressing."

Cue eruptions of protest among my classmates. I would have joined in were I not such a naturally quiet person. Needless to say, crossdressing has most definitely not been expressly forbidden in past copies of the dress code that have been issued (my school doesn't have a uniform, by the way, only restrictions regarding what you can/can't wear). It seems to me a needlessly arbitrary rule, and though I can partially understand where they're coming from considering the long-standing tradition of revealing clothing in drag and the tendency of mischievous teenagers to capitalize on shock/distraction value, I still feel they're pandering to a certain... group... of parents/kids who protest such activities loudly. But still - are they gonna make it illegal for a girl to wear pants to school? Come on.

So what do you think? Does your school have a ridiculous or unfair dress code? Do you think crossdressing is inappropriate in a school setting, or any setting for that matter, and why? And if you're homeschooled, sorry but you're missing out on this "fun". :P

I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing.

I think cross dressing should be allowed at least on Halloween, if not all year round. Of course kids are going to be a distracted when a boy comes to school in a dress, but aren't they going to be distracted by the guy dressed up as a zombie? They might as well not allow costumes at all.

It is a double-standard, though, isn't it? A girl can dress as a boy and not receive any odd looks, but it isn't the same the other way around.

Although I go to a school with a Uniform and I go to a Girls School and it doesn't really matter what you wear on a mufti day (no uniform day) as long as it's appropriate. Though I think it's really unfair that Girls shouldn't be allowed to wear Pants and such. I mean in real life I actually look like a boy due to my lack of long hair and I prefer pants over skirts and stuff. I mean isn't what you wear shows your personality. I think it's stupid rule

Our school never had any outrageous dress codes. Then again, back in the day, I don't recall anyone even bringing up the idea of cross dressing.

Cross-dressing should be allowed on Halloween, at the very least. I see nothing wrong with it.

Yea, I mean It's Halloween. Why does the rule exist on Halloween. People should dress as they please - as long as it's appropriate

My high school didn't have a uniform or a strict dress code, but you didn't see boys going around wearing dresses, usually. When they did they had rocks thrown at them. It's not exactly fair. A girl can wear just about anything and you wouldn't think she was crossdressing. She practially has to paint on a fake beard and mustache for people to see she's trying to crossdress and even then most rock-throwers won't care. In general it's a lot easier and more acceptable for girls to cross the gender line than for boys. Rules against crossdressing are, 9 out of 10 times, really rules against males crossing that line (which is a whole other topic in itself), but try explaining that to most teachers and parents.

In my Senior year of high school, the damn principals wouldn't let us weear our costumes for Halloween. I couldn't even wear a cape! A freaking cape! I wore it to school, with regular clothes. And the principal told me to take it off! :O He was probably one of them religious dudes that hate the holiday (I saw him at my friends church. Her family don't celebrate Halloween. They think it's the devil's day O_o. But I'd always bring in my candy to school the next day so that she could have some.lol)

But that was stupid. I couldn't wear a cape. I told him I was trying to disguise myself from the evil entities who came from the other worlds...cause you know, "veil between words is so thin on that day that beings from other worlds could enter into this world...". But lets not forget the good beings who also roam on All Hallows Eve (some who even give out treats!) :D

In my old school, we were not allowed to wear jackets that have hoods and zippers, but we could wear jackets with hoods but NO zippers..... Confusing, they said people would 'bring weapons in' even though we live in like, the smallest town ever, but wouldn't it make more sense to ban the ones with no zippers? I mean, they have that HUGE pocket right in front, I mean really? I sure did miss all of my jackets that sat in the closet that whole year.

But at my new school we can wear anything we want, gosh, some people do wear some outrageous things....... I saw some people in the hallway today with their faces painted white, for no apparent reason, they said they just felt like it.... Hm......... But we can bring like, anything we want. Once I brang a boat paddle with me to school, it was for a play though, but I had to walk around with it all day, I thought that I might get in trouble, you know, maybe it would be considered a weapon, it was pretty big and heavy, if I wanted I could of easily knocked a few people out with it..... I did walk by the principal with it too, and all he said was, "Nice oar," ...... Weird...... Whoops, a bit off topic but yup, and this friday the teachers are letting us wear our holloween costumes to school! And we're gonna have a really big pep rally!! But yeah, old school had really STUPID dress codes......

My old school was really strict. We couldn't wear anything inappropriate, sunglasses, hats, etc. We didn't have uniforms but they might as well should've given us some because one time I took this really wicked shirt to school with a picture of this really cool panther and there was, barely even noticable, a girl with booty shorts and her shirt tied up to the side and they made me turn the shirt inside out.
My new school isn't as strict. I can take a hat or sunglasses or whatever. They're really lax. My brother took a Green Day Know Your Enemy shirt to school and it had a knife and the letters were the dripping blood font and no one seemed to care. His teacher even said "cool shirt" and they started talking about music.
:chu:

Finished the FR/LG monotype a loooooong time ago. Not that anyone cares though.

When I was in high school, we actaully had guys cross dress a couple times. No one cared since it was usually done as a joke and they were usually ankle length dresses. We got a few laughs out of it but we never had any outragious dress code. The only thing I remember was that we couldn't wear sunglasses or hats in school and skirts couldn't be TOO short.
I did go to a Catholic School for a year and a half. Now THEY were strict. Given my mom's no bullcrap policy at the time, I'm surprised she didn't sue them (not over the dress code but other things.).

hmm... what do I think of dress codes? well for starters, i think it should be slim... VERY slim. If girls want to, they should be able to wear a bikini. If guys want to, they should be able to wear a Speedo. So long as you are not showing Tits or Genitals, it should be okay. It is legal on the Beach, after all. Why not everywhere else?

Also,Cross-Dressing should be allowed.

In my old Catholic school, I had to wear a uniform. It really wasn't that bad, since I'm fairly sure that school wasn't super strict about modesty and such. Now in the school I go to now, I can wear pretty much anything that isn't too revealing-which makes sense until they tell you you can't wearing anything that reveals bare shoulders. :cer_confused:

Our school dress code really focuses on on girls in excessively short skirts/shorts, cleavage, thongs showing etc. Not that they do anything about it...

It think that's pretty dumb that they won't allow crossdressing, I can't even see where they're coming from with this rule. Is this public school? Public schools like to make up dumb garbage on a whim like that.

Because it's a beach. Also, you're at a place of establishment; some people probably don't want to see you half naked. It's almost like saying it's okay to dress in a bikini during jury duty. Plus, if girls started to show up at my school in bikinis, I would get too easily distracted. :[

I don't think anything has been said about cross-dressing at my school. Hats and sunglasses were a regular thing as long as they were removed during classes. No one cared about what you did with your hair or if you had any tattoos, and the only time you couldn't have piercings was only during P.E. class. There were no school uniforms. well, there was, but it was optional and only seemed like there weren't any. You just couldn't wear anything offensive, sexually explicit, or too revealing, not even your shoulders for some reason.

I have to wear a uniform. It's been this way at every school I've gone to, since they're all private schools. The dress code's alright, but it can get stupid. We have to tuck our shirts in during winter, but no one does. D8

The dress code at my middle school is pretty stupid.
Light blue, navy blue, gray, tan, and white polo shirts.
Blue, gray, and tan shorts/pants

That's all that could be worn. Nothing else, other then unzipped jackets that are either blue or gold. (School colors)

Pretty pointless restriction if you ask me. Most kids will do what they're told not to do, in order to spite the adults for making such a idiotic rule. And I support the kids. XD

But yeah, there isn't anything wrong with cross-dressing, girls do it all the time, and no one thinks twice about the fact that girls wear pants like guys do. (They may be pants cut for the fitting of a feminine body, but that doesn't make them any different most of the time.)

Generally, guys don't need to be asked not to cross-dress. We just don't like skirts, because guys are naturally inclined to prefer more logical and practical clothing choices. (Like pants)

We don't even mind that sometimes ladies take a leaf from our book and go for the practical look of the kind of clothing we wear. (I mean seriously, I'd hate it too if I were forced to wear a skirt all the time, or heels, or anything else women might wear that obviously causes pain if you do more than walk around delicately, looking good).

So, yeah, if a guy wants to dress like a girl on halloween, let him. No harm done...especially since it's a holiday where it's perfectly fine to wear a costume of whatever you please.

Uhh.... that's not cross-dressing. They sell pants in the woman's department at clothing stores. Won't find skirts and dresses in the men's section though.

Masks I can see. You want to see who is in the school for security purposes.
Fake weapons? Yep. Some look real and you don't want to cause a scare.

Cross-dressing, uhhh... I dunno. Depends how it's handled. If done in jest (a dude dressing up as a grandmother or Susan Boyle for example), fine. But if it's done to be sexual in some way, then no.

....yeah....like any guy in his right mind is going to try to dress as sexily as a woman can. XD

But, when I was talking about the pants, I was making fun of the double standard. You'd think that if women could have pants, men could have dresses and skirts. XD

But anyways, yeah. I do believe the context in which a person is dressing counts for a lot. That is what dress codes should be based on. Not arbitrary banning of entire styles of dress.

Triforce is the smartest one in this thread ever.

No, it isn't exactly a double standard, more along the line of what society is used too. For a man to wear a dress in today's society in unacceptable. Which is why they aren't sold around here. Skirts are for females, unless you live in Scotland. Which is not America.

However, a man has every right to wear a skirt (unless it violates a dress code, in which case he still has a right, just not around that institution). But we are talking about a school here. Skirt wearing males may cause an uproar, of sorts. It's distracting, it's needlessly provocative, it's somewhat annoying unecessary.

But most importantly, it's sexist. Or, at the very least, can be seen as such. THAT is why they couldn't cross dress at your school. It may be offensive to some, at least that is what they think, so better to stamp it out ahead of time.

We wear uniform. The stupid rule says that one has to wear double layers with a freaking tie for both males and females. It's just that it is very hot here. I do hate the silly crossdressing rule. I am stuck with impractical skirts. Pants are so much better. The best, actually. Only God knows why girls love skirts, high heels, piercings, super tight clothes etc.

The time modern women first wore pants is WW1, IIRC, because the women have to replace men in factories, mining, etc. Since then, it is okay for women to wear pants. More and more do it, and society accepts it. Point here is, so long as a change is persistent, people has to adapt to and accept it. It's the same case as women voters. Sadly, there's no such major event where it is acceptable for men to wear skirts.

This is pretty much what I think of the matter. Girls go around now wearing 'men's clothes' in the form of jeans, tee-shirts (hell, half of my tee-shirts are men's teeshirts because women's ones don't come with the comic book characters I like on them >_<), boots, etc., but the second a man wears anything remotely feminine his sexuality and mental health are challenged.

On the flip side of the coin, our school uniform (propah British school uniform with blazers and ties and whathaveyou) thankfully allowed us girlies to wear skirts or trousers, but I have several female friends who went to schools where they were not allowed to wear trousers, even in winter. It were a wee bit bizarre. o.0
