after watching the movie Train Man, I realized that i am just like him,im try to not make eye contact with people and i only talk to people online.I was just wondering how many of people are like me.
If I'm with someone else I know I'm perfectly fine in group situation. When I'm not though I'm pretty quiet. Overall I'm not very social. I mean in school I talk to everyone, but besides that I don't attend social gatherings or anything of that sort. I prefer to just hang out at home alone or maybe with two other people at the most than be surrounded by a bunch of people. I suppose I'm quite the introvert.

Lots of people are shy. There's nothing wrong with that.

I think severe social anxiety usually manifests itself in more dramatic symptoms, such as nausea or other internal physical discomfort after/during interaction with others. If you really feel horrible on a day-to-day basis or feel like you're being prevented from doing things you want to do, I'd advise telling someone about your problem and getting help.

But don't be so quick to assume that there's something "wrong" with you which requires medication/therapy. More likely you're just a human being.

I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing.

In my reality,I don't have any problem with talking with peoples,I am not that shy either.
But there are some peoples who are really shy and an angel on reality,And on internet they are devil.
Maybe some of you may know what i am talking about. But really, There is no need to be shy while talking to peoples.
I mean what will they do if you talk to peoples? Will they kill you? i doubt that.

They could. They could hurt you in any number of ways, as you and I and any other given person on this planet have probably proved by committing our own transgressions against others in the past. You take a risk each and every time you interact with anything in the world, people especially given their transience and relatively unpredictable nature.

In short, the scariness of socialization shouldn't be underestimated. At the same time, if you truly want to have a chance at developing meaningful relationships with other human beings, there's nothing for it but to face that fear. But think about it this way: if you generally mean the best when you interact with others and make an effort to be kind and understanding, isn't it conceivable and even probable that other people feel the same way and will be similarly forgiving towards you?

this is mostly me trying to convince myself i guess

I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

To be honest, maybe. You don't know that person, so why should you trust them until you get to know them more. What's stopping them from physically or emotionally hurting you? Nothing. There's no barricade around you.

And I'm generally not shy. I'll happily meet new people and start conversations with new people if I have something I wish to talk about.

If you're actually going to self-diagnose yourself, then you have to add hypochondriac to the little concoction of disorders.

I don't like making eye contact, and I am very anti-social. But, that's because I looking into people's eyes feels intimate to me, and I don't want to do that to everyone. And I don't care about being social.

Do NOT self-diagnose just because you think you are similar to a fictional character. Diagnoses like these are usually weak excuses for socially unacceptable behavior. Hell, even going through the DSM IV-TR's diagnostic criteria on your own wouldn't be enough due to personal bias.

You want a diagnosis? Go get one from someone licensed to do so. Until then, announcing that you are afflicted with something you are not makes you a liar and a scoundrel.

There's nothing wrong with you, or me. We're alike, you and I. You see, I like to think I have a certain understanding of... well, people. And from what I can nut out myself, there are 2 types of people at our age group; those who hit it off with everyone, and those who don't. It's that simple. You don't have a disorder of any kind, you just aren't a social animal.

Take me, for example; I pretty much have no social life apart from school. I'll sometimes have a friend or 2 over, but... well, I don't go to big parties outside family or anything like that.

Maybe I'm ranting, but I agree with what most other people are saying in this thread when they say "don't diagnose yourself". There's most likely nothing wrong with you, and if it's bothering you that much that you aren't very social, then just do something about it; talk to someone, or something like that.

So what? They're still your friends... besides, you're bound to have at least one friend in real life.

Look, my point is that there's nothing wrong with you just because you don't have heaps of friends. But if you really don't like your situation, then try making some friends! Or, talk to someone close about it.

I know it's probably easier said than done, but my point still stands.

Doesn't mean a damn thing.

Introversion ≠ a psychological disorder.

Here's your "treatment": stop trying to find psychological excuses for inappropriate behavior.

I am. I have a lot of trouble with social interaction myself. It's gotten better though, with therapy. I'm getting a little better with talking but not very much.

I'd rather not go into detail about my disabilities since a certain someone will come in and twist my words and blow what I say TOTALLY out of proportion. Still, I agree with everyone else, don't diagnose yourself just because you have a few flaws. You may not make eye contact but that doesn't mean you have something wrong with you. Also, having online friends just means you have no life... it has nothing to do with having a social disorder. I have best friends online but I also have friends offline that I try to communicate with as well.

Also, I have to ask, are you talking about the movie called rain man? Because that movie is about a person who has severe autism, not a social disorder.

I hate socializing in real life. I can't even make true friends in real life, save for one or two that I'm not really sure if they care about me or not. ;~;
I'm generally pretty comfortable talking to people, but I have a lot of trouble dealing with flattery. I get really, really awkward around people who compliment me. I'm also awkward around my mom, I don't know why that is.
I agree with the part about flattery. :o

But online a simple "aww thanks, [[Insert name here]]-chan! ^_^" will easily do. :3 I believe it endears the other person as well. 8D

Just because you avoid eye contact and talk to people on the internet doesn't mean you have a social disorder. Don't self diagnose yourself.
Self-diagnosis>A doctor's interference, in some cases.

Mental disorders are often best handled by oneself, in my opinion. A doctor will often just do arbitrary stuff to determine a patient as "ofishuly dignos'd desu". If people can handle it on their own terms, then more power to them. d('-'d) Most people who are old/mentally developed enough to realize their mental disorder are too old for treatment anyway. There's no need to go to the doctor to get an official label and receive treatment that will almost always be futile at their level of cognition. :T

Here's your "treatment": stop trying to find psychological excuses for inappropriate behavior.
It's not always an "excuse" so much as an explanation. Some people want to know that their brain works much differently than others'. D:

Wait, having online friends means you have no life? Excuse me, but I think you're wrong. You can be able to have online friends and still have a real life. I'm able to have time to talk to both my offline and online friends.

Now, on topic. One thing I don't like about medias like movies is if it's about autism and such, it scares people thinking they have that disorder and such. Now, I'm no psychology major, but I think we shouldn't worry too much about being a social butterfly. Live life the way you want to. If you don't like your life right now, change it. :3

Perhaps you misstated that, but if not, I'd like to ask what makes your definition of "having a life" any more valid than other peoples'.

I do not think that TS has anything wrong with him/her. There's a serious problem (in the US especially) of people trying to shift blame from themselves to some mental affliction for any behavior that differs from the norm. This seems absurd to me; it is our uniqueness that makes us who we are, and why anyone would should need to make an excuse for that is beyond me.
