Do you prefer threads in the OVP and OC that deal with important matters, philosophy, politics, deep stuff that requires you to think, or do you prefer threads that ask common seemingly trivial things like what did you eat for lunch ect...

I consider this thread to be the latter because you don't really need to think deeply when answering this question. The second option sure is great for raising your post count. XD

Either one, though I prefer simple threads which require little of my precious brainpower.

Honestly, I thought most of you would go for the meaningful threads, seeing some of the members I met so far want more intelligent conversation. D:

Anyways, in the OVP it doesn't matter. Like Samme, as long as have my input it's all good. In OC, the more random ones. If going for the more meaningful threads, sometimes the debates can get ugly. D:

As someone who used to create many random OVP threads and a few meaningful ones, I can say that I prefer making random threads because they just get more replies, more attention. Although that isn't the way to be, generally I'm interested in the answers to the random threads more than the meaningful ones because they come from conversations or my daily life, therefore I want to see whether I have some things in similarity with other PC members. Other people's meaningful threads often turn into debates, which make them unappealing, and only interesting to read back on three weeks later. Though if I make one (although very rarely), I'll look at replies from only people I know.

And when it comes to replying to both meaningful and random threads, it really depends on the topic. If it's a meaningful thread that I understand to an extent, I'll just post a tl;dr. And when bored... I'll just reply to the random ones. :>

I like the threads that take a little more insight than simply thinking about what you did earlier that day, but Nica is right, the simple threads provide better results. The latter aren't necessarily bad either, they just don't give you much room to explain yourself without tl;dring.

I don't visit the OC much, so I'll talk about OVP.
Having seen your thread title, I want to ask you what your definition of "Meaningful" and "Random" is.

I normally like both, but I prefer the ones that deal with normal life leading more, and our individual lives. They are more interesting in normal cases.

Matters are marked important by the views of people. In my view, politics may be more trivial for normal people like us who can't even do anything but stare at what is going on. If we can't do anything but only look, and the only thing an individual can do to change is to vote, then why bother about it?

As for philosophy, I like philosophy. But then again, seemingly random topics like what I ate for lunch has a funny connection to philosophy, you know? It's so invisible to people without making a link that most people will mark it as trivial. In that case, what importance does philosophy make to your daily life? It only makes you think, and there is a big chance that thinking too deeply about something can make you depressed and reduce the quality of life in the big picture.
As for the seemingly random topics, you can change so many things that you do everyday to make your life better from other people's perspectives, that your own life will improve.
So which one actually has the more positive effect? It all depends on your perspective.

The second option sure is great for raising your post count. XD
One thing I don't understand is what people believe they will achieve by raising their post count... The only thing I can think of is fun...

Try to see it from the 'at a glance' perspective without trying to delve to deep into the philosophical nature of the thread. When you study anything closely, they are all deeper than what they actually appear.

Meaningful: Something which can spark an intelligent conversation. In my opinion of course.

Random: Something seemingly trivial. i.e. sandals or shoes, ect...

One thing I don't understand is what people believe they will achieve by raising their post count... The only thing I can think of is fun...
Funnily enough, humans inherently see something accumulating as a good thing. Don't you feel happy when you get more money? While money serves a purpose, people also get happy when they get a higher score in a game. It's a weird psychological phenomenon that gives life meaning for some strange and wonderful reason.

Meaningful: Something which can spark an intelligent conversation. In my opinion of course.
That's why there is nothing truly meaningful if you think like that.
According to the real meaning of meaningful, it means anything that has a purpose. The question "Do I prefer showers or baths" has a purpose - there's not denying it.
Besides, even if I were to point out your definition of it, what is the use of an intelligent conversation then? What purpose does it have if the random ones are useless? That's a contradictory situation.

Random: Something seemingly trivial. i.e. sandals or shoes, ect...
I would like to refer to the statement(s) I made above again. Sandals and shoes, and talks about them - all will have a purpose once you change your perspective, is it not?

While money serves a purpose, people also get happy when they get a higher score in a game. It's a weird psychological phenomenon that gives life meaning for some strange and wonderful reason.
Again, this actually has a hidden purpose which is either normally not detectable, or people just don't realize it, or people don't want to admit it.

You have no idea how much a high score in a game can give a person from a different viewpoint. The player gets a hidden respect from the others, and if they are alone, they get a sense of achievement. This in turn gives the person fun which gifts the person happiness, which is what human being's main goal in life is.

Try thinking about money. What does money actually give you? The ability to buy things? People still get happy when they get even more money than what they need to satisfy their primary needs which are the only ones they need to live. Why is that? Because they can buy more things as luxury. What good does that do? Give you satisfaction and fun, and probably respect and high holds in your society, which is a sense of achievement again. All this in added effect ultimately gives the person happiness, and that is where the chain of events end up. So in the end, life is a pursuit of happiness, and I love life because of that.
And for that, post count might give people their goals in a way, albeit a small amount.

Nice find, but just as much of a useless find. No offense, because I don't mean it that way.

BTW, I was expecting you to answer to your "If a tree falls in a forest" thread already. Don't you want to?

At a glance, they seem to spark more intelligent conversations. In the case of the 'random' thread, it's mostly filled with one-sided answers that don't really require a conversation to keep the thread going.

I would like to refer to the statement(s) I made above again. Sandals and shoes, and talks about them - all will have a purpose once you change your perspective, is it not?
At a glance, the thread seems random and out of the blue. Which raises the question, why would you make thread. But most people just post in threads because that's what a forum is about or to raise their post count.

You have no idea how much a high score in a game can give a person from a different viewpoint. The player gets a hidden respect from the others, and if they are alone, they get a sense of achievement. Well yeah, if you had just posed a question, you would have answered it. Seeing as you didn't, then I assume you were just reiterating what I just said albeit in a more detailed manner.

Nice find, but just as much of a useless find. No offense, because I don't mean it that way.
It is random and useless. That was the point; it was something trivial that I found. XD

BTW, I was expecting you to answer to your "If a tree falls in a forest" thread already. Don't you want to?
I left that thread for open discussion because it seemed that I was making way too many enemies. I answered Richard Lynch's post via VM.

I really like how this thread became a deep warzone XD

:3

I like the deeper threads, where you can really think about the answer and have a discussion going. But I often just read those threads and don't reply, since many times people have already posted whatever I could bring to the discussion ^^ Repeating is kind of meaningless to many discussions.

That said, I also love to post in random threads, to make time go by or chat with friends. I'm a TCTI-er, hello.

...deep indeed! I'm almost tempted to move this along to a place where not only deepness reside, but discussion predominates. But I'll just keep an eye over this thread and move it when I see it fit.

Deep discussion has always captured my interest rather than trivial. Trivial topics are good for moments of simplicity...but I do prefer otherwise; for the reason that it allows me to think much more about my basic surroundings, it helps me understand that certain things, that were seen to be so meagre in my eyes in the past, do actually have their own merits. Discussions like this have helped me open my eyes to qualities and problems that I could perhaps be proud of or stand to work on.

Needless to say, reading other posts allows you to discover and become insightful towards the way other people think, you either like what they have to say, be complacently neutral to their thoughts and opinions, or view it negatively. Posts like these always spark some sort of reaction, and whether you acknowledge it or not, you are always finding things to apply to your base of thought. Learning more about other people gives you two columns: What you think is a prime example of good nature and what you feel isn't a recommended way of acting and/or associating. It's all based on your perceptiveness.

I know I'm doing this in consistency and it's helped me develop my character as the days pass, and as I carry on maturing during my young age.

Important, philosophical discussions for me, even though I suck at philosophy and am much better at actual subjects that can have scientific evidence.
Because I suck at philosophy, I like it. I like when I am shown to be wrong, because gaining knowledge is just as important as having knowledge.

I hate pointless threads that have no real meaning and look like someone posted the first thing that came to their head.

However, I do like threads that force discussion, but there is nothing wrong with a few random threads =]
