Um, what kind of irc you're talking about?
You need to connect a server. XD

I'm using mIRC, and i chat with some Pokemon-game developers.
I am using Xchat. and there never seems to be anybody on

I've never been able to get those things to work for me. Perhaps someone could help me?

When I go to the Java chat client at this link, it always says:

Connecting...
Unable to connect : java.net.ConnectException : Connection refused: connect

Does anyone know what this means? It's the same thing on Serebii's chat room and every other similar chat room I've tried.

It seems as if the server might be down, or that the listening port is not open. Open up a DOS/UNIX command window and type the command:

" netstat -a | grep 8080 "

where "8080" is the listening port for the server in question.

If the listening port is open, the standard output will be printed to the screen. Here is an example:

Prompt:\>netstat -a | grep 8080
54 21: TCP TORGO:8080 TORGO:0 LISTENING
Prompt:\>

If it is closed, the command shell prompt will be returned and nothing will be printed to the screen. In this case, make sure that the server has been started successfully.

Good luck!

I'm on sometimes, but I haven't been lately because I've been really busy. I usually only get on if I've got nothing to do, since I can only connect if I'm using dial-up or my home connection (the campus connections seem to be banned from the network).

I know from experience that there usually isn't anyone on unless you come in at the right time. I generally find the most people on between 8 and 12 PM EST.

I use Nettalk, a nice little Windows IRC client (surprisingly enough coded in VB). I absolutely abhor mIRC, and I haven't found many other good Window IRC clients. There are a lot of good ones for Linux systems, though.
