Like, an Inuyasha one shot. :O
Streetlights
The quiet road glittered peacefully under the moonlights stare, damp from the rain not long ago. Nothing could be heard except the occasional whisperings of trees, and the still air of a silent presence. The night was pitch black except for the moons dim light and the streetlamps that appeared randomly corner to corner. It was just one of those tranquil moments where everything fluttered here and there, if it werent for the unmistakable sound of tires screeching as a car rolled down the street.
The man whistled pleasantly as he led the taxi gently down the lane. Things were barely in sight because of the dark, but he didnt mind. Even a cruise was known for bringing a little fun here and there. Everything was unsurprisingly still at the quiet end of Tokyo, if it werent for one figure catching his eyes. He muttered some words that even he could not describe, slowing down his car.
About six feet was the silhouette, with long hair and baggy clothes. Was he one of those city bums wandering around the night again? Henry made a clucking sound of pity, when he noticed something. Every step the figure took was with a determined stride forward, and a bum was known for slacking around, werent they? He ran his fingers through his short brown hair as they quickly gripped the edge of the steering wheel, driving carefully to the walking figure. He seemed to be quite an outcast, as he smirked, lowering his window.
Hey kid! Need a ride? He called out loudly, altogether stopping the car a few feet in front of him. The man couldnt see the persons face yet, even the subdued outline but nevertheless, his words had seemed to strike a cord. The figure stopped, walking up to the car. The man gladly watched his first customer of the night wretch open the taxi door and slink in. He shook his head humorously, trying to catch his face in the rear view mirror as the door shut, but shadows quickly enveloped his sight.
You know, I dont go for free. He droned, surprised to see a wad of paper slapped on his hand when he had extended it for barely a second.
That enough? The figure growled, as if not caring for the world about how much money he had given him. The man chuckled amusingly at this gesture.
Itll do. By the name, my names Henry. Yours? He asked in a friendly way after counting the money. It was silence as he resumed driving, only cut off by a loud forced cough.
Alright then! Seems I have a silent visitor here. So, He raised an eye at the rearview mirror once again. As the streetlights passed by, the only thing he could make out was a crimson outfit, but his face seemed to be draped with layers of endless shadows. Where do you want to go?
Anywhere far from this place. Was his response dripping with abhorrence and hate, as Henry tilted his head. Now what would be the matter for running away from home? Of course, Henry had dealt with plenty of cases like this before, including his own friend once. But they had all made the right choices at the end. He laughed a bit at the thought, before raising his deep brown eyes again.
Now come on, you know running away isnt the problem here, mate. Im sure you would find the solution after you think about it. It cant be that bad. He said, taking a sharp turn. There was more silence, before he heard the figure speak.
You dont know anything, so shut up and drive.
Normal people wouldve been offended by this, but not Henry. He had seen too much and knew quite a lot of stuff from his own experience. He let out that amused chuckle again, before shaking his head still recovering from laughter. Oh, so he had a stubborn adamant one here. Well, this was certainly not his first time.
You think you can turn me down with your cursing and swearing and stuff kid, youre wrong pal. Tell me, is it that bad? He asked again, gripping his steering wheel as he watched the figures head move silently to the window, staring blindly at the lights splashed onto the glass. More streetlights passed, fading away from a distance as if not there in the first place.
You dont know what happened. I lost her, and Ill never see her again from now on. He stated bluntly from his deep voice filled with a certain edge of youth. Henry nodded as if he knew. Love, that one subject he had come to face for a time now as well.
Why dont you apologize to her? If you two were that into love and stuff, she would understand. He said with satisfaction, squinting at the darkness with a frown.
I cant, Was his simple answer, before adding a few hesitant words. Even if I can, she wont understand. The voice was now blended in neatly with the familiar essence of sorrow, pain and regret.
Oh come on. If you two were that into love and all, you would understand both each others feelings. Im sure she would.
Maybe, but I doubt it. She never understood it all this time, and she hates me. He added the last line with a satisfaction, filled with the same mourned loss.
No kid. I think she may love you by the way youre talking about this and all.
No reply came from this, as Henry drove neatly around the curb. He had a distant feeling about his customer. Something about him seemed inhuman, but it mightve been just his stubborn streak of pride. It was an aura of firm defiance before finally collapsing. He sighed and shook his head, the car skidding to a halt right besides a sidewalk. He had driven a long way, and that was the most he could do for the kid, unless...
Look, you sure you dont want to talk it out? I mean, just saying Im not invisible and all. Think it over. He added, watching the mysterious shadow of a person slam the door close and walk away.
Now, Henry may not have been an entirely intelligent person, but he possessed great wisdom of his own past as well as common sense. He hummed a low tune before driving around the same block a couple of times. The moon hung round and cast a silver glow to the apartments as well as the shiny yellow metallic part of the cab. He whistled an old melody then, the one he had heard a long time ago. After what seemed like forever, he finally got back to the same place he had dropped off the figure. A smile tugged on his face to see the same person waiting for him.
He chuckled again as the angry figure wrenched open the taxi door and slammed it shut, with him safe inside to greet an open palm waiting for some pay.
[email protected] you Henry. He whispered furiously, pulling out the money again.
Youre welcome. Henry chuckled as the bills slapped themselves on his hand, reading to grip the steering wheel and begin the journey back. It was a long drive, but it seemed to short to this stranger. The aged man smiled as he rounded the same corners as he had done before. The streetlights were still dancing across his windows, but they passed by so quickly even if he was going at a low speed. Finally, they had reached their destination.
The car smoothed into a curb right underneath a streetlight, tires squeaking against the moist ground. But much of the water had evaporated, leaving the air a slight dewy smell.
Henry faced back with a smile. He could tell the stranger was smiling, just a slight curve at the edge of his lips, as he reached out his arms enveloped with a strange scarlet cloth to open the door.
Thanks. That was it. One simple word.
Anytime kid. He said, as he squinted his eyes. He swore he saw a mischievous glint in the deep glowing amber eyes, as well as two familiar triangular shapes poking out of the gleaming silver hair swishing by him, and a long weapon of some sort hanging from his back. He tried commenting on those queer sights, those odd things. They werent the ones he saw everyday, were they?
But before he could get a glance, the stranger had walked out of the streetlight, disappearing into the misty fog of confidence and choices, until he was nothing but a smidge of black...then no more.
Henry sat there for a second, before whistling as he pulled out and drove away.
