According to bulbapedia...

Of all seventeen types, the Water-type is the most abundant, with 92 Pokémon species being Water-type, nearly 19% of the entire known National Pokedex.
Does anybody else think this is kinda stupid? Considering the relative rarity of many other types, among them fire and ghost, I think it's rather stupid to have an entire fifth of the near 500 pokemon to be water type, or part water type. It's much too common. I've had to pick the fire starter in 3 of the 4 regions because I happen to not like rapidash/arcanine/flareon as much as the starter. DX

So this brings me to my usual end of post question. Do you think it's a little ridiculous that about 100 pokemon are water types when a bunch of other types suffer, even taking into account dual-typing? Also, which types do you think deserve more pokemon? I would definitely say ghost and fire.

EDIT:

I just did a little more research, folks.

It turns out that 48 of the 92 water pokemon there are happen to be single-type!

That's OVER 50%. 92 / 2 = 46.

Not only do water pokemon overpopulate, they don't even have diversity in half the population!

I hate water types. It makes it hard to choose other Pokemon for the team because I don't like having two of the same type. But most of the earth is water, so it makes more sense unfortunately.

1; Fire.

After generation IV's meager amount, gen. V needs to show out with less water and more fire. I don't like Rapidash (But how can you not like Arcy and Flarey?! Shame on you!) and I don't really care for Infernape. At least they added more fire-types in the Plat. Dex, but I evolved Eevee into Umbreon, so what was the point of Houndoom? I had a dark type. I started with Empoleon. I don't like Rapidash. Give it up for Magmortar, y'all. :|

2; Ghost.

Not copying you here dude, but I have to agree. I want to see more ghosts. I loved Sableye and Spiritomb, and Mismagius was cool too. But I want to see some ghost types with no connection to older Pokemon. They're intricate and interesting to me, so I want to see some completely different lines, or better yet, not even a line. Just a one ghost stand, like Spiritomb and Sableye.

3. Dark

Muahahahaha. I love the dark types. I feel we need some more of them, too. But please, whatever they do, no pre-evo or evolution for Absol. It's awesome as is. Leave it alone.

Magmortar is the reason why I picked Torterra over Infernape. XDD But yeah, I agree, Infernape was a mere Blaziken replacement. =/ More than anything I'd like to see more dual fire types. Camerupt, Heatran, and Charizard all have cool typing.

I think the dark type has the most design potential graphically. You could really make some sinister looking pokemon if you tried hard enough. Overall I think pokemon should get away from all the "cute-looking" grass and water types since there are billions of them, and get some more tough pokemon thrown in.

I forgot to mention, the electric type is getting pretty sparse too.

i also find it rediculous how many water types there are. and there werent even that many good waters in gen 4. i think that there should be more dragons (not uber ones) and more ghost. come on. have you tried making a monotype dragon team? its pretty hard to do. theres only like five non-uber dragons and most of them are part flying type. i would like to see some more diversity in the dragon type. we need some more ghosts too. most ghosts arent dual type and i would like to see more ghost with two types.

YES. It's extremely unbalanced IMO. Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with the earth being mostly water; Hoenn has the most water, yet Kanto has more water types, and it was mostly land. How's that for irony?
Also, which types do you think deserve more pokemon?
Ghost and Dark, most definately. I want PURE Dark types, too. No more of this dual type, doesn't-really-look-like-a-dark-type business.

Hahaha. Well.. I do like Arcanine but he's not really that special. The list for me goes like this:

1. Charizard
2. Magmortar
3. Ninetales
4. Heatran
5. Typhlosion
6. Arcanine
7. Camerupt
8. Flareon

I found all the rest to be lame. =/

Hahaha, thanks a lot. I knew it would be clever. XD
Maybe they have more water pokemon to show the diversity of life that lives there. Plus they're so many different animals that live in the ocean that it makes it easier for the makers of the game to turn them into pokemon.

I will admit that it has become quite annoying. Especially since the 3rd and 4th generations when for some reason they decided to make a ton of water pokemon and forget about the fire types. Everytime I play RSE I usually use a Torchic as my fire pokemon for the game. Numel's line is okay, but Torkoal bores me to death. Throwing the crappiest fire pokemon of the second generation (slugma) didn't help either. So everytime I play I'm stuck between choosing Torchic or Vulpix. Since those are the only worth while ones.

I won't talk about the fourth generation fire pokemon. They slaughtered the good name of fire pokemon. Besides Magmortar I can deal with him.

I rarely have a water Pokemon on my team. I generally don't like fish, so I usually avoid water Pokemon (unless it's an awesome one like Finneon. ^-^)
There need to be more fire Pokemon. The only one I really like is Camperupt. I never saw the appeal in Rapidash and Arcanine, and Ninetails is meh.

Let's look at types who desperately need help.

1: Fire

You all know this one. The funny thing is, the First generation had more LINES of fire types (Charizard, Magmar, Rapidash, Arcanine, Flareon, Ninetails, and Moltres) then the Fourth generation had pokemon (Chimchar, Monferno, Infernape, Magmortar, and Heatran). Wow. Worse yet, in the 3rd generation, they had the opertunity to make a fire type, but what did they do? MAKE ANOTHER CRAPPY WATER TYPE! Come on, Luvdisk wasn't even good as a joke! Nintendo, evolve it into a Fire type next gen, or I take away your stash of drugs.

2: Ghost

What is up with this? Yeah, I know - Ghosts are suppost to be rare. Rare, apperantly, means 8 lines! (Gengar, Misdreavus, Dusknoir, Sableye, Spiritomb, Bannete, Giratina, Rotom) That's almost the same number of lines Fire had in the first generation! At least they have dual types (Poison, Electric, Dark, and Dragon)... which leads me to my next point.

3: Electric.

Electric SEEMS like a thriving type, with Zapdos, Raikou, Manectric, Raichu (and Pikachu), Luxray, Rotom (and his forms), Jolteon... the list goes on. BUT, if you look at the dual types, what do you get? Rotom's Ghost, Zapdos's Flying, and Magnazone's Steel. THAT'S IT! My word, it's like they WANT to hinder the type's growth! Nintendo, next generation, MAKE MORE FREAKING DUAL TYPES!

Of course, with types like Flying, they don't need to, but there are 3 extreme cases that stick out in my mind...

4: Steel, Ice, and Rock (together because it is the same issue)

Steel, Ice, and Rock are actually pretty large, all things considered. But look at them closely, and you will notice 1 major problem (BESIDES the weakness to Fighting)... there are so few monos! Steel has Registeel and Mawile, Ice has Regice and Glalie (*shudder*), and Rock has Regirock, Sudowoodo, and Rampardos. Yeah... not very good. You have the Regis, one pokemon who is an inferior Medicham (at least in LC Craniados is good), and three jokers.

In their defense, most Water pokemon suck, you have to really look for the good ones, and even the good ones often have lousy movepools. So I suggest that we don't get a ton more water types in gen-5, but a few really quality ones.

That said I think the type that suffers the most is Fire type. See my logic above. Yes there are more Fire types then Ghost or Dragon types, but most Ghost and Dragons are really good pokemon. There are very few good Fire types, most of the good ones being starters. So maybe Fire should be helped out next time.

itd really be nice if there were more fire types, ive noticed theres a lot of bug types too, we need more fire and ghost. heck in the sinnoh pokedex if chimchar wasnt your starter, the only other fire type would be ponyta/rapidash, i think..

Oh my god Prince of Light, you're correct. Let me check my first Platinum Hall of Fame entry.. did I use any fire pokemon?..

No, I didn't. Let's sum up the fire types in Gen IV, pre-national dex..
Chimchar, Monferno and Infernape - Please, no. Torchic, Combusken and Blaziken ripoffs in my opinion.
Ponyta & Rapidash - I really don't like these things.. to be honest, I don't like horses/ponies in general..
Flareon - Flarry is meh in my opinion. it is usable but i'm not a big fan of it either..
Houndour & Houndoom - My favorite fire types that were in Platinum. I would use these pokemon in my next playthrough if I wanted a fire pokemon.
Magmar & Magmortar - I absolutely despise Magmortar. Simple as that.

Needless to say, DP was even worse.. I absolutely LOL'D at that Ronald McDonald-lookalike when I first saw his team in DP. I was like "What the.. is this a fire type trainer? yarite"

You know, someone from Nintendo's gonna read this, and then tell the Gen. V execs, and they're gonna pull a douche move by dual-typing everything with water next game. EVERYTHING.
