The last incarnation of this thread is past the expiration date, much like the milk they were serving at "Fresh" Food Company this morning (place on campus I eat). So, what would you do if you had a million dollars? One stipulation: you have to spend it on yourself. No giving it all away or whatever. You can go over a million, but keep it within reason.

I'd get a super-powerful computer, zombie-proof my home, get L4D2 and Borderlands, get the CCS DVDs, get an ice cream maker, install a drain in our stupid dorm bathroom (seriously, who builds a bathroom without a drain?), get a PS3 and a 360 and some games for those, get an external hard drive, buy some blank DVDs and CDs, get a USB floppy drive (floppy discs are badass), get laser eye surgery so I don't have to wear glasses (or, optionally, get laser beam eye surgery so I can shoot laser beams out of my eyes), and get a sturdy car that doesn't break down so much.

Edit: Another rule: no investing. I guess if you really want to, you can, but that wasn't my intention so much. :/ The point was to list things that you'd like to purchase, though I guess the blame's on me for not just making that thread instead. MAH BAD.

One stipulation: you have to spend it on yourself.
Since everyone keeps saying they'd pay off their families' debts and whatnot, let's just assume that all your and your family members' debts are paid off so you can get back to spending it on yourself. :)

I'm so frugal and paranoid about money, I probably wouldn't buy much. Maybe cello lessons and a banjo, some junk from antique shops...definitely stock up on peanut butter and cucumber soda. Oh, and a Netflix account for the love of god. All seasons of Weeds and Friends and The Wonder Years and Space Ghost and Curb Your Enthusiasm and [email protected][email protected] Ok, I'd go out of my mind and blow it all on dvds.

I would start a trading account:

Then I would put some leverage on these trades:

Currencies:
long GBP/JPY

Equity:
long the S&P 500
short the Russell 2000 (hedge for S&P position although there would be a net long bias in equity exposure)

Commodities:
short some oil contracts

Debt:
short 10 year Japanese government bonds
bet on US yield curve flattening (a bet the short term interest rates will raise faster than long term interest rates, or a bet the long term interest rates) although I think that interest rates in general have an upward bias.

* in standby with my fingers on execution although one has to be patient... the impatient get murder in the markets.

Currencies:

short EUR/USD
short GBP/USD
long USD/AUD (overall, I am a bullish on USD in the medium term, but short term neutral)
long USD/JPY

Equity:
short S&P 500 (requires unwinding of the long position, might be done in a few months)

Commodities:
short gold
short copper

Debt:
long 10 year US Treasuries
long 10 German government bonds
bet that corporate spreads would widen vs. Treasuries

All positions would have stop-losses. If you are losing admit you are wrong and close the position at small loss. Do not fight the tape, and be stubborn.

I'd pay off my parents' mortgage, the car payment, and any outstanding debts they have (which aren't many, as they're very careful), then set up an account that would give them x per month for the rest of their lives. I'd also give a certain amount to my best friend so that she could fulfill her dream of opening her own bookshop. (:

Then I'd buy myself a nice house, nothing too big 'cause I'm not a fan of living in a mansion (too many dead bodies in the library) and set up a literacy school to help the local kids. We have a really, really bad literacy rate around here. Oh, and I'd donate whatever is left to Help the Heroes. I'm a Pacifist by nature, but I think our government's treatment of our soldiers is disgusting.

I'd probably go to America to spend it first since Scotland doesn't use the dollar :v

No really I've heard there's a HUGE Forbidden Planet superstore thing in like, NY or something so I'd go straight there. Maybe stop at Urban Outfitters too~

If I had stuff left over I'd help mum pay off the mortage and dad buy a house that's bigger than his current flat since I don't like that place he's in right now. You can taste the claustrophobia in the air or something idek.

seems there's no place in this town

Pay off student loans, then start buying vintage Buicks and Oldsmobiles for my car collection. I'd also buy an uber-powerful supercomputer, the anime, manga, and video games on my wish-list, a house in the Baxter Village subdivision of Fort Mill, SC, and keep the rest for a rainy day.

No, no gambling for me.

Hahaha.

I have a couple of video games I'd get.
Pay off my family's debt.
Finally finish my Christmas shopping.
Maybe buy some stock.
A few savings bonds.
And finally, leave it in the bank until next time I have to buy Christmas presents for people. It will slowly accumulate, and by the time I'm about 90 I'll be really, really rich. : D

And most likely end up giving most of it away - other people need it a lot more than I do.
Hey!
It's nice to meet you and all...If you need a review on a piece of writing, feel free to drop me a line! One thing, though - I won't do horror. Other than that, whatever!

Stupid big family....
I'll tell you what would happen....I'd get into a moral fight with everyone, because everyone would want a piece of the pie...Pay off loans and such....Should I give the money to my parents? So they can finally run a loan-free company? Should I buy a house? For me, or the whole family? How selfish am I allowed to be? Did I earn the money, or did I win it? Did I take a risk, or did I just get lucky in a win-win situation? If so, I would give it too my parents.

If my parents weren't there, I would Buy myself a house...My OWN house....I would fix it up....Not going crazy, just some minor nifty things like a Laptop inside the table....That when I for example push a button, the laptop would come out of the small wooden table....and a TV inside the wall....A house full of nifty gadgets....That would be paradise for me....XD

I've been thinking about this question a long time.
I'd...
- buy a nice house (5 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, nice size garage...)
- Fix my sister's 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharged ($2,000)
- buy my dad the truck he wants - a Granite Blue Metallic Crew Cab 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 LTZ... a $40,000 pick-up truck.
- go to UTI and get my degree.
- Customize my 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34 to my specs: 500+ HP 3.4L DOHC 24 valve turbocharged V6 engine (280 HP without the turbo), 5 speed manual transmission, suspension work by Lotus ($20,000 in customizations at least. $150,000 at most.)
- Buy a daily driver. Either an Aqua Blue Metallic 2010 Chevrolet Camaro LT V6, or a blue 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS (about $14,000 (for the Monte Carlo) to $27,000 (for the Camaro))
- Buy my dream car: a 1976 Lancia Scorpion, customized to look like the one from the movie "Herbie Goes To Monte carlo"... but with a V6 engine replacing the Fiat 4 banger. (Car can be had for $3,000... customizations would bring it to about $14,000)
-Any leftover would be saved for important things that would most likely come up.
"We all know that small cars are good for us. But so is cod liver oil. And jogging."
"Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you."
-Jeremy Clarkson of "Top Gear" and more recently "The Grand Tour"
"***damn all these women drivers! Take away all their licenses!"
-My sister on days she forgot what gender she was.

I'd buy a house with a working bathroom. Some furniture would also be nice.
Then I'd go on a crazy journey around the world, so that I'm not even living in my nice new house.
you have to spend it on yourself. No giving it all away or whatever.
People who say they would do that are lying anyway.

Personally, I'd the majority of it... and then use the rest to pay off my student loans, buy a car, and pay the rest of my college tuition, and see what I had leftover.
I accidentally the entire million; what should I do?

I would get my mom retired, put some money into to our families nursey (mainly marketing), pay for some college, and pay my friend Jessica's college tuition:D If there was any money left over, I would buy a scheewt guitar, and amp to boot.

.... And if there was still money left over I would treat a bunch of friends and family to a nice tropical retreat. Srsly, 2 freaking cold here:C

Presuming it was £1,000,000 instead (which is actually about $2,000,000 but still):
- I'd buy a nice car (I'm talking supercars here) even though I can't drive yet
- I'd buy a nice house (for when I leave home)
- I'd buy furniture for that house
- I'd buy all the games I want
- I'd buy a kickass gaming computer
- I'd buy 50 lottery tickets
- I'd put £250,000 in the bank
- I'd invest some (depends how much is left)
- I'd bet the rest on Red 19
In my pants!
