My friend is gonna start playing pokemon for the first time in his life (platinum) in about a week. hes not the RPG type and he wants to try something new. how do i impart 10 years worth of Pokeveteran knowledge into my newbie friend in a week? Im kind of stressing this like a pregnant mother, what if he kills a legendary and dosent know it? what if he runs away from a shiny? how do i explain poffins and contests? what if he teaches the wrong moves to his pokemon? what if he sells a rare candy?

im afraid he will get overwhelmed and not play, he is the only person in my group of friends that plays pokemon and i really want someone to play with face to face. ive played at least one game from each generation and im sure you guys agree with me when i say that it can be quite overwhelming to jump into the latest 4th gen game as a newbie. what do i do? what are the baisics i should tell him?

Well , if he hates reading you should tell him about Pokeballs , the dex , how to recognize a shiny or a legend , to check everything and go everywhere . Pffins are pretty advanced stuff, y'know . You should wait for a while and explain hom about this later .

Theres an in game tutorial for most everything of the basics, let him play the first 2 hours while you look over his shoulder, then explain more advanced stuff when he says he got used to it.

I always find it difficult to get newer players to play passed the elite four its almost like they believe that is the end of the game! Perhaps giving him/her a battle and maybe allowing them to win or come close that may excite them enough to become competitive in the game and invest more time on their own research into the game.

I've had that problem with one of my friends a while ago.. now shes a pro.
I started letting her play my edition, explained stuff like fighting and catching (basics) then she bought her own editions and learned all the stuff by herself (well, with help) and then I started teaching her everything about IVs, DVs and strategy. just relax and let your friend learn from mistakes.

Here's a good rule. If the pokemon is standing right there waiting for you to engage it, DO NOT KILL. It's most likely a legendary. -squees-

I'd say most important is knowing which type hits which type in what way. Poffins and Contests are completely unecessary, but without knowing about type effectiveness, the game is almost impossible to beat.
What else..? Maybe other basic stuff like which stat does what... That moves that take 2 turns should never be used... Can't really think of anything else now, maybe later.

Tell him to save often.......

lol this is the advice my mom gave me once when I first got really into playing games, she's a veteran of the old NES games.

Breathe down his neck for the first 10 hours!

Just break him in slow. If you push too much on him, he won't play, especially if you totally take over his game. Leave the hidden stat stuff out for now (EV's & IVs), don't bother him with natures, or anything of this sort. Let him decide what pokemon he likes, and just wait until he starts asking questions. At that point, you're free to pull up Smogon and Serebii and show him how little he knows. :P

The only things I'd push on him immediately:

-Save option
-Type advantages (as needed)
-Legendary pokemon stuff (soft reseting, y'know)
-The difference between attack and special attack.

Then just let him breathe for awhile.
