If you've never played Platinum, Diamond or Pearl, try and start with Turtwig. He will be good for the first two gym leaders, I'd say. Or if you're feeling experienced or anything, try Chimchar. He was the hardest for me to use in the game. But I made it through, and have an amazing team now. Just going to let you know, hope this doesn't spoil the game for you, but you meet a girl named Cynthia and she is the Pokemon Master of the Pokemon League and Elite Four.
That's really all I have to say for now. May post some more tips or hints later on for you.
It's basically like the other games, only there's bizarre stuff like EV training and whatnot. If you're lazy like me, just play like how you played on the old Red and Blue version. Just beat the crap out of wild pokemon, evolve yur guys, maybe capture some dudes and just enjoy the game, and yes, I do know I'm not exactly being helpful.
But honestly, don't think too much and just enjoy becoming a pokemon master. :)
I went with Chimchar and he's now lv. 13 and I have a Shinx as well at lv. 9, both are males and I'm in the tunnel/cave that leads to first gym I believe.
Catch a Geodude in that cave - its Ground-type moves will aid you in the early going. Just keep it away from the first two gyms.
You will want to raise your Chimchar another level and evolve it into its next form before you take on the Gym Leader. He uses Rock-types and you'll need the Fighting-type move that the evolved form, Monferno, learns in order to break his defenses.

I'd suggest picking up either a Zubat or a Starly, since you'll need a flying Pokemon after you go to Veilstone. I'd also recommend getting a water pokemon of some sort, since you'll need it to surf later on and it's better to train it now. Buizel is a good choice; you can pick one up near the Valley Windworks after Floaroma Town. Another good Pokemon to get is the Abra you can trade some guy in Oreburgh a Machop for. Having a flying Pokemon and a psychic Pokemon will help you out with the Veilstone gym, and Buizel's evolved form, Floatzel, learns the move Crunch, which is useful against the Hearthome gym. Your Shinx will help you out at the Pastoria gym.
Yes, he still evolves only by trading, but he's still good to have on your team as Graveler until you can get someone to trade and trade back with you to evolve him. :)
I suggest you catch a psyduck in the cave right before oreborough (I know for shure that I spelt that wrong lol) It's a water pokemon that you get early in the game (earlier than buizel anyways) plus it learns confusion at lvl 18 (I think) and that's gonna help you against the Roark and the ghost type leader.
