Actually, the 80GB can play Playstation2 games.
OP said newer PS3s, meaning the PS3 Slims, I'd assume. None of the Slim models play PS2 games.

I think they removed PS2 backwards-compatibility because it was too expensive to build into every console and the Slim is no different. I wouldn't be too surprised to see PS2 games in the PSN Storefront soon enough, though.

The PS2 games are played off an emulator, from what I remember. So you lost a good amount of quality on alot of games as a result. I'm guessing they noticed this and figured it'd be best left to PS2 consoles.
If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you will never get it done.

The additional costs it would take to produce PS3s with the capability to play the PS2's games is not a viable market for Sony when the PS2 still sells like it does.
What it boils down to is profit which Sony isn't seeing a lot of by including it in the PS3.

Most consoles don't include hardware that grants the console the capability to play its predecessor's games beyond simple emulation which generally isn't a very good quality wise.
The only one that does it without emulation this generation is the Wii because it is essentially a more powerful GameCube.

Actually, the 60GB had the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer. Later revisions (80GB) removed the Emotion Engine, but kept the Graphics Synthesizer and used partial emulation.

But as others have said, it was to cut down the costs. I also thing that they removed it altogether because there were problems with the backwards compatibility.
