See food and water are the things we need to survive so should they be free. Vote if you think the government is wrong in making us have to pay money for food and water. Yes, I think those things should be free. Cause what are you supposed to do if you don't have any money and can't make money, just fall over dead? And the government probably wouldn't even care.

Please check out my InuYasha fanfiction and tell me what you think.

You're free to grow your own crops, farm your own animals, forage, and in many countries also hunt.
What we're paying the shops (and government through VAT) for is them to get this food for us, so we don't have to waste half our day chasing deer and gathering water from the local well — but if you want to do that nobody can stop you.

I would say healthcare and public transport ought to be free, and they are in some places, but food is just not practical with the sheer amount of it being necessary.

Food and water should not be free because someone else has to process the raw material and or transport it to you and they would like to be compensated for their work.
agreed with the above^^
unless you want to grow your own crops xD

Then a government compensates you for growing/transporting/etc. food and the only people who pay are the people who fund the gov't. Usually that's still you though, so in a roundabout way you would be paying for your own free food unless you were dirt poor and couldn't pay taxes. Then it would be free and there's nothing wrong with that.

Water, in most places, also falls from the sky for free (though I have heard about places in the world where people have to pay to collect rain water)

No. If you want to get free food or water, make a well in your garden, or stat growing and hunting for your own food.

The money we spend on food and water from stores and such is used to pay the people who process the goods. Would you like having to go and kill chickens, pluck them and clean them all day and not get payed a penny for it? Then there's your answer.

Naturally, food and water should be free, but...

Yes, you can build a well in your back-yard to collect rain water, but that's also call acid rain. You would then have to purify, dilute, etc. the water for it to be truly drinkable without causing various diseases, germs, pollutions to spread to one's body.

For foods and crops, you can grow fresh vegetables and fruits, but what about your meat, fat, grain, and dairy products?

That's why you pay for your food at your local grocery store and pay for the water bill. The machines people who made and purify these stuff for us needs to be paid, so of course it would us to pay.

Actually, harmful acid rain is quite a rare occurrence. I would be more surprised if acid rain actually happened where I live.

Anyway, you can make it free if you so choose. While yes, it would be hard, but food and water can be free. Wild fruits and herbs are completely free (and come are easily transplanted and/or hardy), as you could possibly find them in your own backyard. There is also wild game, such as deer or birds, and possibly fishing. Water can be collected in rain dishes or tapped directly from a pure water source (like my cabin in Pennsylvania. It's tapped directly into the mountain). It's not impossible, but it would be extremely hard to live this way. Also, not all areas are as plentiful as where I live, so difficulty is variable. But, like I said, it can be free.

As for our human market for food, no, it shouldn't be free. Food is one of the biggest markets in any country, and making it free could potentially lead to a depression. Possibly even an economic collapse (a long stretch, but it could happen).

Very good answer and that was exactly what I was thinking.

When you buy food. You have in your possession a non-raw product. It obviously had to come from something raw and be processed by someone. If you didn't process it yourself, you don't deserve it unless you pay whoever had it processed.

If you've watched Full Metal Alchemist, you'd understand from that the concept of Equivalent Exchange. Its just like that, you have to lose something, whether it be money, property, or time and energy to get your food. As is supported by the Mexican Proverb "He who doesn't work doesn't eat" :P

If we stop paying for food and water then society's more screwed than it already is.

We also need shelter to live. Should houses be free?

Maybe we could start selling oxygen to compensate for the money lost from water and houses, they already do it with bottled water.

Well, that is what happens in the Pokémon world... trainers can sleep in Pokémon centers.
Unfortunately, we don't have Pokémon Centres in the real world.

If we're going to stop paying for food we might as well stop paying for everything else thats nessesary.
Shelter, gas to heat the food, and your home, electricity,
education is also nessesary, we should stop having to pay for that too.
as a matter of fact, everything should be free 8D

of coarse that would probably just make people less willing to share. knowing they'd get nothing out of it. People want to feel special, rewarded for the things they do, and having alot of money shows you did something important or special.

I know i don't like doing things for other people when i don't get anything out of it.

Ineffable~

Wasn't the government's idea. D:
If enough people wanted it to change, it would. :P

It's not the government's job to care. :x
Anyway...work for your food if you don't want to be a forager. Pretty simple, ya know? :B

...Pretty much what everyone else is saying. People need to be paid for putting food together for those that don't do it themselves. ;o

Well, that is what happens in the Pokémon world... trainers can sleep in Pokémon centers.

Exactly. People need extrinsic rewards. Even selfless people like things. :3

It would be nice if our food and water were free, so yes.

But you can grow your own crops and hunt and so on, so I guess in a way it already is free... If you can get off your lazy ass and go, lol.
But I guess if they make food and water free then they should just go ahead and make everything else free while they're at it, because, well, there would be no point if you didn't have to pay for one necessity but pay for all the others, I guess. It would kind of throw the world off balance.

I don't like the fact that we have to use money, personally. I think we should just all make what we want to make and share with one another and do what we need to do that way. Money isn't always fair, so. Money doesn't create the things that we pay for, so I never really figured out why we really, REALLY need it in the first place. I think we should just do what we have to do and survive. I think life would be much happier for almost everyone if there was no such thing as money and people actually worked together to survive.

...But that's just me.

You want "free" food? Grow your own fruit, vegetables, and livestock. But that takes some investment - both in time and money.

And that's why we pay. The people who grow it. The people who process it. The people who package it. The people who transport it. There's no drive to do any of those jobs if you're not getting paid.

That said though, we need to do something about the cost of food. I want to buy local. But why does buying from a farmer's market a couple of blocks away cost me five times as much as buying groceries from another country? That needs to be fixed somehow because our concept of food and where it comes from is warped.

Too lazy to check, but anyone who voted "Yes" and said yes to getting free food and water is an idiot.

It's our economy. Distributing food is the best way to earn profit. If we werent to spend money on food, sure, a few people would have a couple extra dollars to buy enetertainment things and pay off bills, but if we didnt pay for our food, our economy would absolutely bomb (Atleast more than it has right now in America).

Food shouldn't be free. Specially when it's not the government normally providing it, but people who are thinking of making a profit.
Nobody wants to create something without a profit incentive, and since the government is not involved in it's production, why would it be free?

Water supply on the other hand should be close to free, which it actually already is. Didn't you know that it was meant to be provided for free by the government?
But the government still put a cost on it, because the government still has to spend money behind this sector, and behind the purification and wages of the people working there.
But actually, in most cases, the government would give it for free, and even with the cost imposed, the government makes a loss on this sector.

It wasn't made free for just one reason: Because then almost everyone would misuse it, and waste it as much as they wanted, because they're losing nothing.
The cost was imposed just so that wastage is cut down by a lot.

I am not an idiot! Haven't you ever seen Star Trek? Everything on there is free and it all works out. But no calling people who vote Yes on this thread an idiot, that's flaming.
