Well, I wouldn't necessarily say the amount of chapters decides whether the fic is long. To be honest, it is [in my opinion] about how much they drag out certain plot points. I.E. I don't want to hear about the bad guys meeting for eight chapters.

Does this make sense?

I don't see nothing wrong with the amount of chapters a story has. Like adder said however, if the storyline isn't going anywhere then the length is a problem. If we complied all the chapter that Harry Potter had, my god we will have a lot. Just keep the story rolling and you will do fine.

Well, based on personal experience, not many people are willing to read super long fics. Which is why you sometimes see devoted readers but no one new in some pieces of long fan fiction. I don't really condemn super long fics, but I caution you against posting all of it at once. I'm not sure if anyone would read it if that were the case.

This is based on my observations and experience however, so feel free to do whatever you want. I was just stating my opinion here.

Yes, thank you Adder. It does make sense. As it is, I'm currently writing Chapter 14, and this is where the real action between the good guys and the evil organizations begins.
I think I made it to around fourteen chapters in my primary fic before I got to the major plot. I'm finishing up chapter 25 now and I've still got a long way to go. So no, I don't think length is a problem, it's just a matter of keeping readers interested for that long. ^^;

As a reader with a notoriously short attention span, I'd have to say that length is an issue for me. If you can pique my interest, I'll stick with the story for the long haul, but often the common theme with fan fictions that have a plethora of chapters is that they tend to start too slowly for my taste. This is, of course, assuming that I am simply reading and not reviewing, as if I am doing the latter my standards are obviously different. I'm just giving my opinion here and am not trying to offend anyone. I just thought that I'd put in my own two cents :)

I have a horrible attention span, so I'm only likely to pick up a long fanfiction if it's already completed, which also means I don't have to worry about the author discontinuing the fic (like I've done on numerous occasions). I know it's a problem, and it's my fault, not the author's.

To be honest, I don't read terribly much fanfiction at all. I prefer writing them, and I've decided not to do any more long fics. I expect my current work to be around five chapters, so not huge. It's kinda like, I dunno . . . bite sized?

As long as it keeps my interest in the beginning and doesn't end up with something stupid (in my opinion, anyways), I'll read it from start to finish as well as any sequels.

I'm not trying to diss story styles here but pokemon growing wings after falling in love.....I stopped reading that story after I saw that.
