This was probably broght up before, but...
Shouldn't Emerald be Corundrom(sp?) or something?

Ruby and Sapphire are both forms of Aluminium Oxide(rusted aluminium). As is Corundrom(sp?). But, as far as i know, emerald isn't.

Or am i just insane and seeing a coincidece?

Well I don't think people really care about such little things. People recognise the names Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald but not many probably know what Corundrom or anything else is. So thats why!

Unfortunately, big corporations like Nintendo seem to cater to the world's intellectual LCD... :pirate:

Yeh, thats too bad.
Or maybe emerld is a form of Aluminium Oxide. I don't think so, but...
Still, why were the first two the same thing then?

Nope. There can be green saphires thogh!

"Pure Corundum (Al2O3) is rare in nature and is perfectly colorless. Small amounts of metalic elements can substitute for aluminum in the corundum crystal structure, giving rise to many color variations. Gem corundum of any color is refered to as sapphire with a preceeding color designation if the color is any other than blue. Blue corundum is simply called sapphire. There are two other color varieties of corundum that have specific names, the pinkish-red to red ruby and the orangish-pink padparadscha. "

I've never thought of it like that. XD I'm not actually sure that Nintendo are that Chemistry based in the naming of games. They would have chosen Emerald being it was a well-known gem stone that was a different colour to Ruby and Sapphire. I think it is purely a coincidence that both gemstones had to be a form of Aluminium Oxide. Well done for figuring that out, as I'm sure no one else here would have done XD

it is a coincidence that ruby and saphire r of aluminium oxide, because then insted of cristal it would have been bronce, but no one really cares about all that,we only want the games to be good and updated-_-

The games were named after their respective star's colour. For example, Sapphire is named after the blue Kyogre. As for Emerald, it sounds better than Corundrom... I think that's the case.

It's kinda like asking why GS are named after colours, and Crystal after a jewel.

Well I just want to add something in...

In "The Legend of Zelda: OOT" you are required to gather three gemstones: the Kokiri Emerald, the Goron Ruby and the Zora Sapphire. They are all precious gemstones, and have the color green, red and blue in them respectively.

Nintendo obviously wanted to keep in the stream of using colours to represent the respective games, and naming them after gems was the key because when I hear the word "Ruby" I think of the colour red, and when I hear "Emerald" I think of the colour green. I don't stop to think... "Aluminium Oxide!!" But I'm sure Nintendo didn't do it on purpose to shun the world of science, so don't fret about it!

Yeah, I have to agree with Cyclops, it's more the actual colour association than any scientific basis.
