For the past several years I have been under the influence of a mental disorder generally reffered to by the acronym OCD. OCD stands for obsessive compulsive disorder and if often characterized by compulsive actions like constantly feeling the need to check locks or wash one's hands repeatedly. What many do not know is that this disorder can involve more than just actions. OCD sprouts from anxiety. People who feel immense stress and obsess over the slightest of things can often develop this disorder. These obsessions can be anything from the need to be perfect to fear of sexual situations. When I was diagnosed with OCD, I... Freaked out to say simply. I was sent to my mother's psychaitrist as a prompt from my therapist. It was then that I was put on medication for my disorder. In the recent months, I have struggled with being put on medicines, and the following poem, a genre known as slam poetry, chronicles my fears and worries of being one of the millions with obsessive compulsive disorder.

The following poem speaks of suicidal thoughts, problems with taking medications, and abuse of perfectionism. You are forewarned.

Control.
That's all this little pill is.
Two a day.
Is that really going to help me?
Can you tell me that some drug is honestly going to make me better?
Make the obsessions stop?
Truth is...
I'm scared.
Fear.
The root of anxiety.
Will I do as well in school with this...
Form of control?
I don't think so.
Perfectionism is my life.
Nobody understands...
I need to be perfect.
I need to get that Ivy League scholarship.
I'm a scary person.
This disorder...
It's nearly killed me.
Literally.
Suicide attempts...
I'm pitiful...
Maybe I should really take this little pill...
No!
It won't help!
My conscience screams in my ears, and I believe her.
For once though...
Realization comes to me on my own.
I have to defy this little voice in my head.
Trying the medicine can't hurt...
Can it?
Maybe...
Maybe I can get better...
Maybe.
I'll be okay...
In the end.

Slam poetry is imperfect. More of a spoken word. Def Jam Poets is a group that travels around the country doing poetry jams. Very very cool.

Descriptively, I love it. It really delves into your head, gives it a personal touch. emotionally, I find it somewhat lacking. I don't quite know how, it just feels somewhat sterile.

ooh... I might have it. I'm constantly washing my hands. For a reason, though. I get dirty all the time from touching our pets.

*scared*

Wow, that's a good poem. Slam poetry can sometimes be called "performance poetry", although I write about deep stuff and nature, so, yeah.

It's good, but I feel it's more prose than poetry, just because of the language used.

"One reason why mathematics enjoys special esteem, above all other sciences, is that its laws are absolutely certain and indisputable, while those of other sciences are to some extent debatable and in constant danger of being overthrown by newly discovered facts."
Albert Einstein

"What science can there be more noble, more excellent, more useful for men, more admirably high and demonstrative than mathematics."
Benjamin Franklin

"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty – a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of paintings or music, yet sublimely pure and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show."
Bertrand Russell
