Within this year means during R/S 10th anniversary. After B2/W2 being released in June, it's another good reason to release R/S remakes on their 10th anniversary for DS. R/S remakes would be good to end DS era for Game Freak.
I'm guessing what Xander is saying is that if we do not hear a thing after B2/W2 and the remakes do not pop up at the end of the year, a safe bet would be that they'll just arrive later in the next gen.

Just saying that because, at this moment, we have nothing 'official' to really work with.
Don't you think Hoenn deserves to be at least this beautiful?

I know what Xander is saying, that's why I think remakes release on R/S 10th anniversary would be right thing to do because those games would be effective way of ending with DS + 10th anniversary is perfect time for releasing remakes.

Anyway, I doubt they will skip remakes in this generation. Game companies usually want to continue making games on the same engine as long as it makes sense. They spent money on producing 5 gen engine, so now they most likely want to earn as much as it's possible, using already produced engine.
More of that, 5 gen engine's graphics of environment and soundfont's instruments would suit R/S remakes in almost every aspect.

I e-mailed Nintendo about an Emerald remake as well, this was their response:

Hello,

Thank you for writing. As our resident PokéManiac, I can definitely understand why you would like to see the classic Pokémon Emerald remade for one of our newer systems. Unfortunately, a remake like this has not been announced at this time. More importantly, we do not have any information that tells us this game will or won’t be announced, but I will pass along your comments to the departments which make those decisions.

We often hear from excited fans asking if a particular game is going to be announced. I don’t want to dampen any excitement you feel about the game, but I want to make it clear that until Nintendo makes an official announcement of a particular game there is nothing we have to share about it—regardless of any rumors you may have heard or announcements from Nintendo subsidiaries elsewhere in the world.

If or when we do make an official announcement about any new Pokémon games, we will share all the exciting details on our website (www.nintendo.com). Until that happens, we appreciate your patience and ask that you continue checking the website.

Sincerely,

Alex Schuster
Nintendo of America Inc.

so they are either toying with us or Game Freak is still in the planning process of the games, either way i doubt they will give a 'Yes' or 'No' answer, by the way, here is my e-mail to them:

Dear Nintendo,

I am a long time Pokemon fan, from the series to the games. I have been a fan to the series since the first time I picked up Pokemon Yellow for the Game boy. My favorite Pokemon game is Pokemon Emerald, that game had a lot of firsts for me, the weather, the tricks on the bike, etc. I was wondering if there is any chance that we will be seeing a remake in the future? I would love it if this is true.

I know you all are busy people but i would really appreciate it if you replied to this, it would mean so much to me, i know you probably can't directly say 'Yes' or 'No', but can you reply the best way you can?

Thank you

Sincerely, A Pokemon Fan

IMO, it will either be announced after B2W2's release (some time in July) then released November 2012 which will mark it's 10 year anniversary because there is still room and this happened with HGSS, it was announced in May and released in September giving them 4 months to serve out information & release the games which is the same gap from July to November. If not that then they will wait till around May 2013 to announce the games and again, release all the essentials lining up to the release around September 2013/Early 2014 for other countries. This is more likely as it's happened a couple of times in the past IIRC most recently with Platinum & HGSS, that's when Gen VI (Assuming it's in the works) will be announced for a September release in 2014 - That's just my opinion however.

That seems to early. That would mean that their new Main Game would be overshadowed by a remake. They'd lose money if they did that. They'd wait at least four or six months before they release info that they'll be releasing a game and then another 4 to actually release it. which would push it out of the ten year thing just for sales.

I don't think they'd announce it right after B2W2's Japanese release anyway, or even the international release. It detracts attention from the main event, and that wouldn't be fair for B2W2 now would it?

Or maybe this time they are releasing two "third versions" instead of one, to cover potential loss of money caused by two close main games releases, assuming R/S remakes release in November.

They can announce R/S remakes in August/September. By this time B2/W2 will be selling well enough. Even if B2/W2 will get a bit overshadowed by R/S remakes info, people will still be buying them. They can also think of something that would convince people to buy B2/W2 and R/S remakes together, the same like they thought of new Kami Trio forms only for AR searcher owners.

Sale wise no it really wouldn't They would not make full sales of they released the games that close together. B2W2 would hurt the release sales of the remakes as there is already a new game out, no point in getting an updated game yet. Or Remakes could hurt the sales of B2W2, oh well there is another new game coming out, no point in getting this game, just wait a little longer for the one right around the corner.

They'd wait half a year to a year after the international release to get the optimal sale percentage they can get for their games. Anything else is shorting their own funds.

Having two close game releases is always better for sales than skipping remakes in this generation, like some people suggest.

FR/LG were released in US only one week before Emerald in Japan. Did it really badly affect FR/LG sales in US? Also, they started giving detailed info about B2/W2 only two months before release. The same could be done with R/S remakes - releasing B2/W2 outside Japan and at the same time starting giving info about R/S remakes.

B2W2 are also released two years after B/W and there are no other main games for it to compete with so they can do this style of release. This is probably a test run for an advertisement style to see how well they sell with short notice information. We still know next to nothing on B2W2 right now.

And yes if they were to start detailing information about remakes after this, the sales for B2W2 will either stop or slow down to a gradual halt. They won't be releasing any main games for up to at least 4 months after the games are released within that area.

Releasing B2W2 and R/S remakes in the same year wont hurt sales. B2W2 is a sequel, something brand new, while RS remakes are just remakes of an older game so its not like they will overshadow each other as they are two different types of games in the sense that they both wont be 'brand new' and overshadow each other since R/S is just a remake (and will obviously sell less). I'm sure fans would end up buying both of them though. Although, revealing R/S remakes right after B2W2 is released isn't smart.

If they do plan to release R/S remakes this year, late November seems the most plausible release date. I could see them announcing the game in mid-August. But like someone else said, if we hear nothing about R/S remakes this year then I think its best to just assume they will be saved until next gen because I doubt they will continue releasing DS games into 2013.

For me personally, while I would love R/S remakes on the 3DS, it just seems like a pain to wait for them until next gen. That means we could possibly get the Gen VI pair next year, then we'll likely have the two year gap until the next game is released which would set us at 2015 or 2016 for R/S remakes. I really just want to revisit Hoenn with updated graphics already, and don't really want to wait another 3 - 4 years.

I agree with this because B2/W2 being first paired "third versions" and first direct sequels being released in June were totally unexpected, so after them, everything is possible to happen now, even remakes being released about 5 months after them.

Imo refusing to make R/S remakes in gen 5 engine would be like throwing money away because Nintendo wouldn't make easy cash using already produced engine. And because 3DS needs to be taken care of as soon as possible, gen 5 engine should be utilized with R/S remakes in this year, perfectly matching with R/S 10th anniversary.

"Absolutely!" would be my more precise answer to the above poll. I think the games set in Hoenn are on par as my favourite with the games set in Johto. I absolutely LOVED playing Sapphire. The whole secret bases thing, collecting decorations, the underwater exploration, the different kinds of bikes (mach and auto), planting berries and waiting for them to grow, the braille element involved in finding the Regis, the trick house, the shoal cave where the clock influenced the tides, Mirage Island, etc. It had so much more to offer than a number of the other games in my opinion and I think it more than deserves a remake.

I completely agree, all these features aren't in more recent games so to see them in up-to date graphics and modern remakes would just be brilliant. Not to mention that those clock-based events are no longer available IIRC.

The Pokémon Company tends to follow the same routine, so yes, I do believe that there will be remakes. To answer the question as to whether I will buy them or not, who knows. The RSE era wasn't my favorite for sure, but still created fond memories. I may end up buying these supposed remakes, but no guarantees.

Someone on twitter asked Game Freak game director Junichi Masuda if there would be any remakes of Ruby and Sapphire.

He answered (in Japanese):

"Thanks! I've received your sentiments. Ruby and Sapphire are very important games to me. I want to make something good. Thanks!!"

Note/Trivia:
Masuda has said that Ruby and Sapphire is his favourite games, because they are based on the Kyūshū region of Japan where he used to go on vacation as a kid. He even named a NPC girl in Sootopolis City after his daughter Kiri who was born in September, about the time when the games were almost completed and were being debugged.

What I'm trying to say is that Ruby and Sapphire lies very close to this guy's heart and he's a founding member of Game Freak, the Director of the Board and head of development. He came up with the idea of the Global Terminal.
He's also, according to me one of the three most important persons at Game Freak along with the Game Freak CEO / creator of Pokémon Satoshi Tajiri and art director and Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori.

I didn't know they were his favourites but yeah there is some conclusive contributions there, surely if he remade R/G & G/S and they aren't even his favourites then, if anything he'll remake Ruby & Sapphire and possibly/hopefully put more effort into them.

Well of course there will be a remake. The question is when it will be out.
We don't know for certain whether there will be remakes, just because there have been remakes of generations I & II doesn't necessarily mean Gen III are next even though I'd love for there to be.

There's still a high chance of one considering they've done it for Gen I and Gen II, why wouldn't go down the next in line? :[ The newer games from DPPt and up don't need remakes or anything yeah, but considering RSE were made for the Gameboy, an upgrade is a must.

I think we're going to see a Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald remake around Generation 6. And I think Gen6 will be on the 3DS.

If there is a R/S/E remake I'll buy it, day one, ; A; GF handled the G/S/C remake really well, so yeah. R/S/E weren't my favourite Pokémon games ever but they had some really, really fun moments and characters, and the story was quite nice. Also Secret Bases.

I don't think remakes for R/S/E are necessary since GBA graphics are quite good and in full colour, unlike R/B/Y & G/S/C. The Pokémon you capture there are transferable to PalPark and then to Black & White. Only those who don't have a GBA, DS (original) or DS Lite would have a problem since there's no GBA slot on DSi and 3DS (that sucks).

I would still like to se remakes though and I would definetly buy them.
