Some Natures Benefit one and skill and give another skill a disadvantage and some skills are just netruel so they give no benefits nor disadvantages.

Some natures don't effect your stats at all, while others decrease one off your stats with 10% and increase another one with 10%

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Natures

For example: an ADAMANT nature increases you atk but decreases you sp. atk. It should be used on pokemon with high atk and low sp atk, because it wouldn't be smart to use special attacks on this pokemon anyway.

Well Lets See. Say we had a Adamant Swampert. With 350 Attack.
While We Have a Hardy Swampert with 315 attack.
And A modest Swampert with 280 attack.
Not a Huge difference But it can be that little difference which helps alot.

If you aren't in to competitive battling, you shouldn't pay to much thought into it, though it would be nice if you caught a pokemon with a good nature. The only thing you really shouldn't do is to train pokemon like Machamp with a modest/timid nature, but I think you get the picture, right?
Glad I could help ya.

I'm going to sound like a dick to be honest, but I think Natures are the worst thing ever introduced into the games. The amount of times I've got annoyed when people have told me in the past that my Pokemon apparently fails for having the wrong Nature.
Need to put something here, just don't know what.

Elarma's right, if you aren't into competitive battling then you don't really have to worry about it. It's all about min/maxing, getting the right nature with perfect IVs to squeeze every last drop out of your Pokémon's potential. Some people are just into that. If you're not, then you're not.

Natures can affect Pokémon that you don't use for battling though. A good example is Feebas, who evolves into Milotic when its beauty condition is high. Since most people prefer to just feed it dry Poffins, it helps to get one of the natures that prefers dry food.

Signature drawn by me.
