Hypothetically speaking, let's say a new revolutionary product just came out. The ~Dream Recorder~! It begins as a small earpiece that senses your brainwaves. Inside the earpiece is a chip that goes into a compact machine that converts your brainwaves into a DVD! From there, you could watch whatever you were thinking! So far it can record dreams, nightmares, daydreams, and visualizations. It can't record stream of consciousness. The video and audio quality in the DVD is equal to the extent of one's imaginative capabilities.

So, do you think that this product would be beneficial or detrimental to mankind? Would it be used for good or bad? Should it be distributed as a luxury item, commodity, or strictly for government use? What would you do with it and would the images come out clear?

I would say, it would be more of a luxury and government item. Because first of all such thing would take A LOT of capability and I suppose would be a technology in beta for a few decades even for basic capabilities, which would be luxurious. But even more advanced like with details, brain activity, brain state, would be more of a government thing.

It would also have a few legal problems since there are some people that dream sort of..... not G rated >_>' k?

I don't see why it would detrimental to society, I would love to relive my dreams. I hate it when after you wake up they just sort of... slip away. It would just be a luxury in my opinion, because I doubt that kind of technology would be cheap and I don't particularly see how the government could benefit from it. They'd just have a bunch of videos of people talking to rashers of bacon or (as has happened in my dreams) people running away from aliens in a tractor, only to take refuge in a hockey rink. (o__O).

On a side note, what would lucid dreams be like to watch?

EDIT:
It would also have a few legal problems since there are some people that dream sort of..... not G rated >_>' k?
That would open up whole new area in the... shall we say XXX industry. Amateur dreams. XD

What I hate when I have a superly cool dream, and then when someone in real life says something said or does something done in the dream, I get some kind of deja vú and don't know why. So yeah, a Dream Recorder would be epic. Also I agree with AdvancedK47 on the last sentence. XD

I like the idea.

Just as long as our dreams are our property, and not something anyone else can violate without our permission. =3

This sounds great! Maybe they could try it on dead people and see what happens there...

Anyway.

I personally hate that I can't describe subjective experiences like dreams to others in a way that I know they'll imagine it the same way I saw it, and I've always thought it'd be cool to have something like this.

When I think about it I never bother thinking about things like who'd use it and how it'd affect society, I tend to just think of how cool it'd be to have others see what I see in my mind, since apparently I can't get it across too well with art.

I don't see how it could be particularly detrimental, unless it caused dream cancer or something.

I don't know how to use it for evil, either. I guess you could find out what scares people, and scare them again, but meh.

Luxury item, no qualms.

I'd use it as directed. Record dream, watch when conscious.

My dreams would come out fuzzy, at least. They tend to be more abstract, state-of-being experiences which nevertheless link to something I can describe. Like the state of bliss I connect to Joshua of TWEWY. o.O There was also something sexual there, but I don't speak of that, I the RL.

It could have application in understanding some of the thought processes of people with mental issues. Expanding the application to visualization would make it much more entertaining, I'm sure.

This would be great. Most of the time I can remember my dreams, but usually not in much detail, or I forget them right after I wake up from one. But it would be nice to see them in detail whenever I wanted.

Though I think some of my dreams would get me in trouble being on DVD..... 0_o

I WANT IT NOW.

Seriously, I'd love to relive some of my dreams... just seeing them again, omg <3

Well, if I can't relive the past dreams... then meh. Since my dreams were best in 2008. Now I'm lucky to have a really nice dream once a month.

Depends. Electronics tend to create an electromagnetic field, which may interfere with brain activity such as dreaming. I know that if I have any electronics on near me in bed I can't sleep properly. Electromagnetic fields are also linked with other problems regarding brain activity and the charges within neurons that are essential to generating an impulse.

It could use a bit of shielding to prevent interference, even then I'd be cautious.

My dreams pretty much are cancerous, as I almost always have nightmares or at least gloomy, unhappy dreams. Dreams to me are often more about what I'm feeling in them than what is actually happening, hence when I describe a nightmare after the fact, people think it sounds 'cool', because all they hear are the events >.>

I get jealous of others' dreams quite a lot 'cause everyone else seems much more capable of having cheery or epic dreams than I am. I'm quite cheerful most of the time in the waking world so I don't get why I still can't dream that way. I think something like this might help, since it would remove the need to have to explain dreams (especially ones that aren't even cohesive enough to be put in words) or the risk of leaving out something important due to forgetting. Who knows, maybe I have something repressed so far back in my mind that I'm not even aware of it, and with this thing, perhaps others might be able to help me solve the mystery.

I'm glad I can have dreams, but it's so lame we can only remember SOME parts of it ;A;

I'd only use it if I happened to have a dream I was particularly interesting. Most of mine involve my middle and high school days, and (despite my username) my parents owning an Oldsmobile Cutlass (which they never did IRL).

But it always seems that it's when I'm having my most interesting dreams that I'm rudely awakened, so something like this could prove to be useful on occasion. Just as long as the recordings of my dreams didn't fall into the wrong hands, that is xD

People this is hypothetical. It's not real, lol (to those who believe it's real XD).

Anywho....you all don't think this would be detrimental in some way? What if the dreams you don't remember have some type of intrinsic meaning? Also...the porn industry would probably skyrocket. I think this would change the way society would operate a bit more.

I don't quite understand what you mean by intrinsic meaning, especially as teh interwebz had this to say about it;
adj.
Of or relating to the essential nature of a thing; inherent.
Anatomy. Situated within or belonging solely to the organ or body part on which it acts. Used of certain nerves and muscles.
As for the porn industry booming, why is that bad?

I dunno, I've never had a full fledged sex dream. Who wants porn that ends at foreplay? XD That's like... soft-softcore... light.

Now the horror movie/lit biz I think would skyrocket too with nightmares, night terrors, or seeing what people experience during sleep paralysis. Like someone mentioned, discovering what truly scares people is a powerful thing.

I think the government could use this in one way that's detrimental... imagine everyone is linked to this dream recorder, and the government views all our dreams. Anyone who dreams of weapons or nuclear bombs they consider "terrorist potential" and have you arrested, or anyone who dreams of murdering someone, they arrest, etc. Big Brother potential, this has (and... I just typed like Yoda speaks).

Oh, and dreams have amazingly little intrinsic meaning. Freud believed they are a link to your subconscious, and maybe they are. But for the most part, I feel most dreams are just your brain going through the 99 cent bin of your memories. Ever dream about the stupidest thing? Like, going to a clothing store and discovering they sell liverwurst? Try puttin' meaning on that. :P

They actually do have that, if you're willing to shell out close to a thousand bucks, if I recall the price. It detects when you're in REM and flashes a light red light, which you can apparently see in your dream. This is meant to trigger your awareness that you're dreaming (so it does require some outside conditioning). I, personally, think its a crock of total BS, but hey, here it is:

I was kinda thinking along the lines of:

Most people dream many dreams every night. The problem is, we usually don't remember them. So we may be having dreams we wouldn't want people to know about every single night and not even know it. If we were able to record them in a digital format, this would pose a problem, as we all know how permanent digital data can be. So the only permanent way of deleting said dream (short of various software for computers that I don't know the validity of) would be to destroy whatever was holding the video of the dream, thus wasting money.

But if problems like that could be overcome, then I do think it would be kind of neat to record your dreams, especially for people who like to interpret dreams. This would increase their accuracy quite a bit.

I have trouble remembering dreams so this idea appeals to me, though I see the potential downside.

It would be bad if it turned people into dream zombies the way television and the internet turn people in TV and net zombies. I can see a huge spike in youtube visitors as people upload their dreams for everyone to see, which could be dangerous in other ways. It could cause people to become more disconnected with reality, like how it's normal for lots of us to see violence on TV, even real violence on the news, and not really be moved by it. You'd eventually have someone kill someone else all while thinking it was a dream.

It would also be bad if someone got a hold of your dreams somehow. Dream hackers, or whatnot. That could be used to blackmail, bully, or just plain embarrass. There would be a big privacy issue. Or even a personal safety issue. Imagine if you were gay and hiding it from your ultra uptight religious family and your parents went snooping through your dreams. :x

And dreams can be frightening in deep, psychological ways and it might not be the best to have those to look at. Since they can be about your biggest insecurities they might reinforce someone's negative view of themselves, leading to lowered self-esteem and depression, or body issues like anorexia.

If they ever come out with those things, I'd just make sure my parents never get there hands on one of them. I'd be in SO much trouble.

As for who it CAN belong to... other then me will finally find out who the hell my friend likes, the government maybe? Don't see how it would help them much. I don't think someone could use that for evil, though, so I don't know...
he did it, not me.
