Final Update

I beat Blaine, then went and crushed Blue. Finally Mt. Silver was open! Then I went and caught 2 slugma's and bred them, and got my baby slugma. After doing that, I decided I wanted Ninetales so I wasted a bunch of time and effort obtaining a fire stone from the guy who lives in Bill's Kanto house.

Then i spent about 3 hours training my pokemon and came up with this team:

{Typhlosion} Torch Lvl 66 /w Charcoal
Flamethrower
Strength
Flame Wheel
Earthquake

{Magcargo} Magma lvl 48 /w Charcoal
Smog
Ember
Roch Throw
Flamethrower

{Magmar} Furnace lvl 67 /w Magnet
Flamethrower
Thunderpunch
Psychic
Fire Punch

{Houndoom} Flare lvl 60 /w Charcoal
Faint Attack
Sludge Bomb
Crunch
Flamethrower

{Ninetales} Coal lvl 31 /w --
Ember
Confuse Ray
Quick Attack
Flamethrower

{Lanturn} Lanturn lvl 12 /w Nevermeltice
Flash
Surf
Waterfall
Whirlpool

Battle Recap /w Red

Torch wipes out Pikachu with one earthquake
Flare wipes out Espeon with one crunch (critical hit)
Furnace fights Blastoise and faints. Coal is sacraficed to revive him and he finishes Blastoise off.
Torch, Flare and Magma all go down fighting Snorlax. Finally after wasting all of his PP and many hyper and full restores, Furnace is able to take him out.
Furnace takes out Charizard with 3 thunderpunches (I also use max elixer)
Furnace takes out Venasaur with 2 flamethrowers.

^^ Link to picture of me beating red. I can't post images yet so that's the best I can do.

----

Now I'm either going to do Psychic on Gold or Poison on Silver.

**EDIT**

I've decided to try Poison, but I don't know how to evolve haunter since im using the KiGB emulator, so I was wondering if I could simply either a) gameshark a lvl 25 gengar when haunter hits lvl 25 or b) simply change haunter into a genger with gameshark. Or I guess I could leave him as a haunter.

And I'll be updating this one a lot better then I did for my fire type challenge.

if I were you, I would download DualGBA
TGBDual :) Good emulator to make trades in 1st and 2nd gen games ;)
But now to action, first update:

Spoiler:

Grass Pokemons now...but lack of stones is really dissapointing. It would be fine to buy stones in Johto, f.e after battle with some strong trainer, or in some hidden place for high price. I can get it in other ways ofc, but...it's annoying. But I haven't any other idea, so go!

Chikorita (Chuck) as a starter. Trained it to lvl 12 near N.B.Town. As it's grass team, I've Bellsprout...again. It's really boring X_x. I named him Yawn, great grinding plan has started. I've left Sprout Tower for next Pkmns, and headed to Azalea. Chuck and Yawn had 19th levels, when I reached Azalea. But now...it's day x_X I must wait for the night and catch three Oddishes. Why three? Waiting for the night...

...Okay, sun is down, we're going to Ilex. Why I need three Oddishes, as for most people it's just useless to have one of them? First (Solaris) will be turned into Bellosom, after receiving the Sun Stone. Second (Villeix) will be turned into Vileplume, when I reach Kanto and get Leaf Stone. Bill's grandpa will give me Leaf Stone only, if I show them...Oddish. So third (Stonelol) is just for that - 'cause I need Leaf Stone. Stonelol was sent to PC, Solaris and Villeix started grind-party in Union Cave. Both evolved into Gloom at 21st level, so I went to Sprout Tower (Yawn advanced to 21st lvl, evolved into Weepinbell). Chuck grinded to 21st too, after battle with Dede (my rival) 22nd. In Azalea's Gym Solaris&Villeix knocked all "small trainers", Chuck defeated Bugsy (23rd now), and that's how the story goes.

I must win Bug Catching Contest now to get first Sun Stone. Second will be for Sunkern->Sunflora, but I'll catch it only, if I'll have 2nd Sun Stone.

EDIT:
Update number two ;)

Spoiler:

So, I've Sun Stone :D Before Saturday, I've beaten Whitney, Morty, rival, and some minor trainers. At Saturday midnight (:D) I've joined Bug Contest. And what is important now - Pinsir. If you have Pinsir, you just can't lose. Before it I've had Scyther, but memories from other games was priceless. I've found Pinsir, won the contest, and got a Sun Stone. I'd like to evolve Solaris now, but Gloom still has Moonlight&Petal Dance to learn, so...I'll surely wait until Moonlight, but not longer, because I wanna have Bellossom in my team, now ;D

I've also had a funny story at grinding. Raikou visited me...so early ;) But I've used Sleep Powder, then some Growths, then attack. I do not need Raikou in this game. A lot of experience is more important now.

And also, battles...Whitney wasn't problem, Dede too. Morty was tough for me, I must point that. Anyway he couldn't defeat me, so four badges are in ;)

Finished up the Johto Gyms. Nothing too hard, because I don't remember any of them from yesterday. On to the elite four.

Spoiler:
Will:

OHKO everyone but Slowbro w/ Omega's Shadow Ball. Slowbro took two and almost one hit me with psychic.

Koga: One hit Aridos, Venomoth, and Foretress w/ Fire Punch. Muk took 3 Fire Punches. Crobat was annoying because I kept missing with TPunch, so he took about 4 and almost killed me.

Bruno:

All of his pokemon but onix took multiple shots but couldn't kill Alpha.

Karen:

Froze Umbreon on the first Ice Punch and then killdt it. Murkrow and Vileplume went down with a single ice punch. Gengar and I licked like two children in a lollipop store in the middle of the summer. And Houndoom, who I was fearing, was being a dumba** and used Roar 5 times in a row. Moving on.

Final Battle Lance:

Easiest (other than Will). Gyarados OHKO w/ T Punch. Dragonites all OHKO w/ Ice Punch. Aerodactyl too. Charizard took like 2 shadow balls or something, don't know, don't care.

Figured that the hard part was done, so I might as well finish up.

Rescued the little girl and arrived in Vermilion.
Went to Saffron and got Psychic.
Went to Celadon, beat Erika, and got Giga Drain (which completed my final moveset).
Went to the Power Plant, to Cerulean, to Nugget Bridge, to Cerulean, and back to Power Plant to solve their crisis.
Beat Misty with either Thunderpunch or Giga Drain.
Beat Lt. Surge with lots of Fire Punches (hardest battle so far).
Sabrina was Shadow Ball bait.
Realized I didn't have the Radio Card or Bike, so I helped the Copycat in order to get back easily via train.
Got the Expansion Card and took out Snorlax.
Beat Brock with 5 Quad Super Effective Miracle Seed Powered Giga Drains
Blaine took 2 hits for all of his Pokemon, and even though he hit me with Flamethrower and Sunny Day powered Fire Blast, I still didn't lose a Pokemon.
Blue would have forced me to heal, but Arcanine, like Houndoom, used Roar almost exclusively.
Onward to Red!

Ok. Vs. Red

Pikachu was easy enough, lowered my attack while I killed it.
Snorlax... rest, rest, rest, rest, rest, rest, rest... Had to just switch back and forth until he ran out of them. I am now dangerously low on attacks for only having killed his second Pokemon.
Espeon outsped the Gengar with Shadow Ball, but not the other one. I proceeded to Fire Punch, faint, send out slave and revive, repeat, until I killed it.
Venusaur: I didn't know what to expect, so I healed the dead Gengar. It charged up a Solar Beam. I healed, and Solar Beam crit'd and almost one hit me. I healed it off again while Venusaur charged. Fire Punch, Solar beam, heal while Venusaur used Sunny Day, and then Fire Punch killed it.
Charizard: I hit him with a TPunch, but he killed Alpha. Omega put him to sleep, revived Alpha, and managed to kill him with Shadow Ball.
Blastoise: Alpha hit him with TPunch that Paralyzed, but he killed me with Surf. I then revive switched back and forth at least 10 times before he was fully paralyzed. Then one more sacrificial TPunch, and finish it off with Shadow Ball. GG Red.

Alright, so I will begin this challenge now using the electric type on Pokemon Crystal.

Btw, if I am not able in any way to obtain a thunderstone for my eevee, can I still use it against the Elite 4 despite it not being an electric type. I can wait to train it after the Elite 4 and get the stone from that guy in Cerulean, however, this would be much easier.

Update #1:
Spoiler:
Since there are no electric Pokemon early in Pokemon Crystal I decided to take Cyndaquil until I was able to receive my first Pokemon from the Odd Egg. I chose Cyndaquil to try and get there as soon as possible while avoiding as many trainer battles as I could along the way.

The first two gym battles went down easily as Cyndaquil was too powerful for each of them. Fortunately, the first Pokemon I received from the egg was an Elekid(didn't take screenshot, but hopefully this will suffice).

I proceeded to train Elekid until level 30 where he evolved into Electabuzz and then trained Electabuzz until level 33. As you can see, I am very worried about Whitney’s rollout. I taught both Fire Punch and Ice Punch to Electabuzz. Electabuzz one-hit everything on the gym until up came the Miltank.

There will always be a reason to hate this thing.

Anyway, it was holding on for dear life and I knew I had her. One quick swift was all it took and the battle went by much faster than I had first expected. Next time, I plan on searching for a Chinchou and pick up an Eevee that I plan on evolving into a Jolteon.

Third update ;)

Spoiler:

Sorry, I don't have so much time. First was grinding and going with story, 2nd was defeating the E4 ;)

That was my team before E4. Grinded to 53th, then 2 Rare Candies to Solaris = Solarbeam. Time to defeat Elite Four. IIRC Charizard was the biggest problem, but somehow I managed to beat elite trainers. Now I'm in Kanto, next update before battle with Red ;)

Final Update

Caught Lugia as a HM slave. Also converted weepinbel to an HM slave. After that I kind of just tore through everything until I got to red... he spanked me first try so I grinded, then revive *****d and beat him.

Pikachu - fell to an Earthquake
Espeon - tanked Todd, Carson and Desmond. Nathan managed to kill him with a surf as he survived the physic.
Snorlax - used Weepinbell to revive Desmond. Then revived and healed everybody as he couldn't touch me. He basically just used rest over and over, so what I did was when he woke up, I switched Carson in on that turn because he would go back to sleep. Then I killed him with a critical hit double kick.
Blastoise - Desmond tried to kill him but died, Nathan finished him off.
Venesaur - Todd OHKO him with a Wing Attack
Charizard - Fell to Nathan.

And thats it! Second GSC Mono challenge complete.

Yay! Alright, so far I've caught a Larvitar(15), a Geodude(15), and an Onix(16). I've just finished defeating Bugsy, and guess what? For the FIRST TIME EVER I CAUGHT A SHINY!! It's not one I can use, but still. It was a Level 3 Bellsprout. So yeah, I'm progressing.

Thank you myrrham.

Just wanted to let you guys know now that I have defeated Clair, gotten my 8th badge and am now on my way to the Pokemon league.

Here is my current team:

Larvitar LVL 38

Rock Slide

Bite

Sandstorm

Screech

Graveler LVL 38

Magnitude

Rock Smash

Fire Punch

Rock Throw

Sudowoodo LVL 39

Ice Punch

Rock Slide

Flail

Low Kick

Corsola LVL 39 (What a lifesaver he is)

Surf

Tackle

Recover

Whirlpool

Onix LVL 38

Rock Throw

Screech

Strength

Iron Tail

Then I usually have a low level HM Slave. I like using Low levels, as I won't rely on them to counter the rock as I would a higher level non rock type. I must say that I am dissapointed that I can't get any fossil Pokemon though... But I will be sure to catch a Chansey for that one girl's Aerodactyl ASAP. I just hope I can get through the league with my current team. I think I might be able to do Will fairly easy. Koga might be a little tough. God help me with Bruno. Karen should be fairly easy if I use Larvitar and Sudowoodo while spamming Bite, Low Kick, and eventually Flail. And then Lance... well he'll depend. I'm sure Sudowoodo could easily defeat him if he is at a high enough level. Anyways, this is a very fun Challenge! I think I'm doing very well and can't wait to finish!

With all regards,

-ChrisTom

Finally, I can tell that I'm finished with this ;)
Last, 4th update! ;)

Spoiler:

Kanto's story is all about great grinding ;) First of all I went to Cerulean and got first Leaf Stone (Yawn->Victribell). Red had some type advantages - Charizard and Espeon. Geez, grind muss sein. I've battled E4 about ten or even more times to get some experience. What is most important, that Gina Picknicker has called to me and given 2nd Leaf Stone ;D I had Vileplume and Victribell then. I've also defeated most of Kanto trainers and solved most important problems. Low 70s levels were the target. Whole team achieved it (Solaris even 71st ;)), and after a lot of boring Kanto stories and battles, time to finish the challenge ;)

Pikachu vs Solaris
One Solarbeam and the most powerful mouse in the game were out. ;)

Venusaur vs Villeix
Sleep Powder, then Acid-time, once again, and Venusaur was finished. But he used some Solarbeams as well. And it's not very effective :D

Espeon vs Chuck
Body Slam against Psychic. Huh, Chuck was nearly faint, I've had to use Hyper Potion. Idea was okay, Espeon were down ;D

Charizard vs Chuck
Owww, Flamethrower time...most painful moment, Chuck used Body Slam once, but fainted as well ;( Anyway...

Charizard vs Villeix
Again, Villeix most sensable tactic - Sleep Powder then Acid!!!!!!!!!!1111 Most dangerous Pokemon out, now to the glory ;D

Snorlax vs Yawn
Yeah, it was expected. Only to heal Chuck and Solaris, victory is soo close...

Snorlax vs Chuck
Earthquakes and Body Slams, tough hits, Snorlax took a good part, but he couldn't stand. And now to the great finish!

Blastoise vs Solaris
Blizzard made me confused. Wooh, not fainted, and now, catch mah Solarbeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!...

And that is how Ober finished G/S/C Monotype Challenge ;)

Why six Pokemons? I've taken my HM Slaves with me - HMBoy (Krabby) and Fly! (Noctowl). But I haven't used them, so I guess everything is ok ;) I'll give my team screens later, if I don't forget ;D

Okay, thanks for starting the challenge, myrrhman, and good luck for another challengers. I'm done! :D

Can i join with normal types?

EDIT: i already started haha

UPDATE 1:
Named myself GOLD (creativity is amazing isn't it?)
Rival: BOB
defeated BOB
went and captured a Pidgey ( Timothy )
captured a Sentret ( James )
Went through sprout tower and got my first gym badge!

Pidgey/Timothy - Lvl 13
Sentret/James - Lvl 9

Sentret is a bit tougher to train against Bellsprouts haha.

Well, i continued through to Azalea town and saved some Slowpoke. Ya know what happened there? James evolved into Furret!
Then i continued and beat Bugsy with a few exp left until Timothy evolved.

Current Poke's
Pidgey/Timothy - 17
Furret/James - 17

I HAVE COMPLETED THE CHALLENGE!!

I beat the Elite 4 easily with a large amount of grinding. Afterwards I went on my tour of Kanto and defeated all Gym Leaders easily, with the exception of Blue, who I had a difficult time with. Afterwards I headed up to Mt.Silver and did some hardcore grinding until all my Pokemon were at level 55. I headed into the dark unknown of the cave, and found Red. After a long and thorough battle, I knew that I had just completed the Official G/S/C Monotype Challenge: Rock Type Edition. Brock would be proud:

And if you still don't believe I beat Red:

POOF! HE'S GONE!!

Sorry, but I don't have the time to post all the stat pages. But I'm sure that is proof enough. I really enjoyed doing this. For those who don't know, this is the first challenge I have ever completed. Thank you for creating this thread Myrrham. I really appreciate all you have done for the Pokecommunity Forums. I can't wait to put that fancy bar in my signature! Thank you again.

With all regards,

Im going to do another one, just using normal and flying types, so a dual monotype challenge. I've got 6 possible pokemon so I should be fine.

First Update

Picked Totodile as my starter... this challenge will be hard enough so I might as well pick something easy. Also made it 3 am so that I can catch HootHoot, then Pidgey and Spearow right when it hits four. Anyways did all that and caught them, then grinded them to all learn their flying type move. Destroyed sprout tower, got them all to like lvl 14 then beat Falkner.

Then I got Togepi from the aide, and went down to the cave. Really had a tough time with the hikers, and the one outside the cave on the town side fainted my party. Went back and killed him the next time without losing pokemon, problem was The Master was out of Metronome. Then easily beat the rocket based, and just grinded them a bit. Beat bugsy very easily (flying vs bug), then went to fight my rival. Tore through him easily too thanks to foresight. Caught a paras HM slave too, also plan on getting a lanturn (all water + flash).

Then went to goldenrod, grinded my pokemon a lot, and just training them more before Whitney.

Hey, PP here, trying out a Psychic challenge on my Silver cart. Yes, mother, I know how to use the PHONE. And, gee, it is convenient. :NOSTALGIA: Named trainer Domino. Wednesday, 2:48. Let's go brolords.

This challenge is sponsored by Franz Ferdinand.

:CHALLENGE START:
"Chapter 1: Beginning to Slowpoke"
:NEWBARK TOWN: Grabbed Cyndaquil, no nickname for you. I mean, geez, all you have to do is beat up like a level 9 Pidgeotto and a level 14 Koffing. That doesn't earn you a name. And gimme that berry.
:ROUTE 29: Actually managed to get to Cherrygrove without a single encounter. Huh.
:CHERRYGROVE CITY: Map Card get!
:ROUTE 30: Somehow managed to only encounter 2 level 2 Pidgey, avoiding a level up. If I can't beat my rival, I guess I'll go back and fight one more for a small advantage.
:CHERRYGROVE CITY: Bought a couple potions for rival battle and a few antidotes for later. Rival tiem!
:RIVAL ENCOUNTER: Let's get it over with.
  1. I Leer, he Scratches for 5 damage. (14/19)
  2. I Leer again, he Scratches for another 5 damage. (9/19)
  3. I Tackle for crap damage, he Scratches again. (4/19)
  4. Potion, Scratch. (14/19)
  5. Leer, Scratch. (9/19)
  6. Tackle him past halfway, Scratch. (4/19)
  7. Potion just in case, Scratch. (14/19)
  8. Tackle him dead. Wasted a potion.
CYNDAQUIL levels to 6.9999, literally 1 exp away from 7, learns Smokescreen (Whoop-dee-freakin-doo).
:ROUTE 29: No encounters again! Score!
:NEWBARK TOWN: Rival named Rivale because it looks cool. Would of liked to name him Poopy McGee, but, you know, character limit. Let mother be a piggy bank so I can get that Snorlax doll someday. :cer_boogie:
:ROUTE 29: I refuse to not describe every route and city I pass by outside of grinding excursions. And screw you bad haircut kid, I can catch Pokémon just fine. Pidgey on first tile of grass, level to 7, no other encounters.
:CHERRYGROVE CITY:Yep.
:ROUTE 30: Ignore first trainer, second trainer levels CYNDAQUIL to 8, manage to evade third guy.
:ROUTE 31: No battle for you. I'll save Dark Cave for later.
:VIOLET CITY: "The City of Nostalgic Scents" Really? I never read that sign before. Freaky. :NOSTALGIA: Skip Sprout Tower, on to try me out a Spearow. First try, throw out a few Smokescreens, critically Pecked to death. Second try, throw out a couple Leers instead, 3 Tackles and 2 Potions later, level 9. Next trainer somehow managed to critical 3 times, requiring 2 potions and bringing me to level 10. This Cyndaquil is breaking my bank. Grind to level 12 for Ember, time for Falkner.
:GYM LEADER-FALKNER: Let me just say this: Falkner is math. I mean, his gym floor is in the shape of a dollar sign and he wears hammer pants. Pure math. First try, Pidgey goes down with a couple Embers but gets a Mud-kip on me. His hacked Pidgeotto (Level 9? What the hell?) ends up beating me from 1/3 health because of 3 gimped Embers in a row. Freaking Mud-kip. Second try I critically Ember Pidgey to death. Take that, Mud-kip! Pidghetto owned, level 13. Does Zephyr Badge really raise attack? And in what way? Anyway, I grab the egg because I might need the Everstone in case Eevee decides to evolve before level 30.
:ROUTE 32: First trainer is unavoidable, but he doesn't level CYNDAUIL.
:UNION CAVE: Ugh, rock types. Managed to grab that Potion and evaded that first climber. Second climber unavoidable, but his Dudes go down eventually, and level CYNDAQUIL to 14, evolution. Yaaay.../sarcasm. Avoided first firebreather. Skip the path to Swift for now. Second firebreather unavoidable.
:ROUTE 33: Yep v.2.0.
:AZALEA TOWN: Mistuh Kurt...he dead. THE HORROR!
:RAINMAKER WELL: It sounds cooler than SLOWPOKE WELL. Taking on all these Rockets since they disappear, they're unavoidable anyway. QUILAVA owns all dese grunts. "Just...too..strong." :cer_nod: Leveled to 17, not that it matters, because he's an HM slave now.
:AZALEA TOWN: "I'd be honored to make BALLS for you!" : SUPPRESSED MEMORIES: Well now I can go back and get my first Psychic type.
:SLOWPOKE WELL: I can call it this now that there are actually Slowpokes in here. Caught my level 8, named him Combo.
"End of Chapter 1"
I'll get back to you guys once I've ground Combo up enough to face Rivale.
