Commonly Confused Counterparts (and my thoughts on Japanese Names)

It occurred to me that it would be a good idea to list characters who are commonly called by their counterpart's name. Here's the entire list so far.

Red (games, manga) and Ash (anime) - Ash was based on Red. Still inexcusable. An exception would be if you named Red "ASH" either to copy the anime or because the name triggers MissingNo.

Blue/Green (games, manga; the male one) and Gary (anime) - Same character, and Blue/Green can be named in R/B/Y/FR/LG with Gary a default name. This happens way too often. The same exception for Red applies here. Also, never refer to him as Green when discussing G/S/C/HG/SS. NEVER.

Kris (games) and Crystal (manga) and Marina (anime) - They all get called Crystal. Get the freaking names right! I have yet to see an entry on TV Tropes that gets Kris' name right in the original, unedited entry. Since Marina is exclusive to Legend of Thunder, she isn't much of a problem.

Barry (games, anime) and Pearl (manga) - Even Wikipedia fell victim to this for an extended period of time. Bulbapedia goes with the name Barry, and so do I. Confusing things further, "Pearl" is commonly used for Dawn's manga counterpart instead of Barry's.

Other common misnames include Soul for Lyra, as well as Kamon for (game) Silver (to distinguish him from the Chronicles one-shot character who is commonly thought to be Ash's father.)

Now for something I call... The Japanese Name Rule. Basically, no one should ever refer to characters by their Japanese names unless the poster is Japanese or the character does not have a different name in English (recently revealed Pokémon, for example.) Other examples of this include referring to gym leader Blue (who is un-nameable) as Green. The English name has always been Blue with the exception of some minor manga and FR/LG. Ash should always be called Ash, not Satoshi. (Ship names such as SatoKasu do not count for this, though discussion of the characters themselves counts.)

Barry's name was not revealed until he appeared in the anime. Before then, all we knew was most people believed Barry to be the name. As Wiki requires sources, it had to go by Pearl, which is what the default in japan was.

As for Soul and Kamon, those are player names, Soul was created before Lyra was known to be her name, so that people would have something to call her by. Kamon is the same.

All these names were around well before nowadays. Some people have just used them for so long, they still use them as their names.

In the manga, Dawn's counterpart's name is Platinum Berlitz, and commonly known as Missy. I've never met anyone who called her Pearl, seeing as Dia and Pearl are a double act, as shown very early in the manga (going by PokéSpe, but I'm not that aware of their presence in any other manga).

And on Bulbapedia, Barry and Pearl have separate entries, don't they? As they are in separate canons.

For a while, Barry was called Pearl, simply because no one knew his official name.

When it was revealed in the anime, it was changed.
