Hmm, really I didn't notice how slow D&P were until I started playing Platinum and SS. I don't think they're like too slow, it just seems like it takes an additional 5 seconds for your pokemon to use an attack. But of course 5 seconds in the gaming world is a long time :D.

I own all of the pokemon games except for Pearl and some GBA games, and HG and SS are faster than Pearl, Diamond and Platinum, but only the GBA games are actually slow.

This.
The surfing and everythings made me piss off when I got back to my Diamond after playing Platinum ==
Nowadays I only use Diamond to trade and that's pretty much about it.

The slowness didn't bother me until I played Soul Silver. Only then I noticed how slow the battle scenes in Diamond are -_-

I make a point to never play Emerald, Platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver before I play Pearl, because then the slowness of the battle scenes just grate on my nerves. Whoever thought that the battle delay was necessary needs a good bootin' up the arse. >:

You don't have to have the battle scenes on, you can turn them off under options. That speeds it up slightly.

This does not happen in Platinum, or Heart Gold & Soul Silver.

Just wondering.
This happens to me too!
all those things you just said, happens to mine.
and like you said it doesn't happen to the others.

DP has always been slow, I noticed this since I've changed from RSE to DP.

  • I just started playing Pokemon Ruby and it's hella slow, but the battle scenes seem to go faster than those in DPt AND HGSS. But I never noticed how slow it was in diamond... I guess I don't really mind, I get used to how slow it is after a while.

I can give you the answer like a professional Pokeball player:

The graphics for the D/P games were almost brand new! It was the first time they ever used individual particles for moves, the first time the environment was ever 3D, and the first time the game had to measure what time of day it was. When Platinum came out 2 years later, the developers managed to upgrade the game's speed, probably by lowering the size of the graphics files.

Hi, you can make battles faster by turning off Battle Animations in options and making the text speed "fast".

After only playing the ADV. Games (which are quicker compared to DP) and Pt. and HG, I found it a huge pain to help my brother with Diamond. ANd the surfing speed... oh my gosh ! T_T

I knew that eventually they would release a sister game in the Sinnoh series so I decided to wait. So essentially I went straight from FireRed to Platinum and LORD was there a speed change.

Wild Pokémon encounters take such a long time (though still quicker than the GB and GBC versions), but what really got me was the walking speed. No wonder they turned on running in buildings because it would take you on average about three weeks to traverse the Pokémon Centre. Surfing speed was the same issue. I've heard of pleasure cruising but COME ON!

Another thing which they've addressed in HG/SS (sort of) is the HP bar - if you have a level 100 battle in the Advance games and use a KO move, the bar would go down in about 4 - 5 seconds. If you tried that in D/P/Pt you would need a calendar to chart it's progress:

Blastoise used Fissure!

...

...

*A Geological Age passes*

...

... It's a One-Hit KO! -- "NO KIDDING!!"

[/rant] I should have my own column. :)

Oh by the way - saving in Platinum takes an entire Moon Cycle to complete.

Hated it. =P And when you Surf it's slow also. UCK. Glad they made it fast again in Platinum+. I think R/S/E had the fastest gameplay.

Being that diamond and pearl were the first pokemon games for the nintendo ds.Platinum,SS & HG are all way better due to they were able to perfect the issues that came up in diamond and pearl.

Doesn't really help. I did all that, and Pearl is still too slow for my tastes. I'm tapping the A button to get to the next screen, or just sitting back waiting for something to happen.

But they were the first games to have what they have in terms of graphics and whatever else went on in the background. Of course they're going to be kind of slow.

Had a little look on Bulbapedia at the Ruby and Sapphire article and I found an interesting note which may partly explain why the Gen IV games seem slower than Gen III:

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pokémon_Ruby_and_Sapphire_Versions

For those of you who don't know, "framerate" or "frames per second" (fps) is the amount of times the picture you see is updated within a second. For example, if a movie was show at 15 fps, then you will get a new frame 15 times each second. Crucially, the higher the framerate, the smoother the video appears to be.

Since Gen III is running at 60 fps, it is going to look smoother and faster in comparison to Gen IV, which only runs at 30 fps. The reason for the switch could be the inclusion of 3D graphics in Gen IV - the DS is not a very powerful console, and it might not be able to cope with rendering that many 3D objects at once at 60 fps.

Just a thought. ;)
