Elric, I may not be very experienced on monotyping myself, but I think you should first play water, fire or flying. They are easy to find/get, especially fire/water as you start with one. Flying are also pretty easy to get, and can reward well. Anyways, no updates for now but going to continue my game now.

@Update: Another brief update.

-Defeated Lt. Surge after getting CUT on Ship.
-Defeated rival on Ship as well as all other trainers there were.
-CHARSUKE evolved to Charizard.
Current team:

"CHARSUKE" level 38 Charizard
Mega Kick
Mega Punch
Flamethrower
Wing Attack

@Update

This update is a bit bigger.

-Went through rock tunnel to celadon
-Beat Team Rocket on Celadon
-Beat Erika
-Got an Eevee, Evolved to flareon with fire stone, named him RONO.

So my team is as follows:

CHARSUKE LV 48 Charizard
Brick Break
Slash
Flamethrower
Aerial Ace

RONO LV 25 Flareon
Helping Hand
Sand Attack
Growl
Quick Attack

HM MASTER LV 21 Gloom (Evolved it so I could get the 10 caught requirement for Flash, to have 2 HM's with it)
Absorb
Sweet Scent
Flash
Cut

Screenshot:

Update:

-Defeated team rocket at the ghost tower.
-Defeated Snorlax at bridge for better access.
-Defeated Koga, Screen below:

Update:
-Defeated Team Rocket at Silph Co.
-Defeated Sabrina

Team after Sabrina:

CHARSUKE LV 64 Charizard
Brick Break
Slash
Flamethrower
Aerial Ace

RONO LV 26 Flareon
Helping Hand
Sand Attack
Growl
Quick Attack

HM Master LV 22 Gloom
Absorb
Sweet Scent
Flash
Cut

LV 25 Gyarados(Another HM slave, without a name)
Thrash
Thunder Wave
Dragon Rage
Surf

@Update:
-Got Key to Blaine's GYM
-Defeated Blaine

Update:
-Went with bill to One Island, defeated some bikers.
-Defeated Giovanni as 8th GYM Leader

@Update:

-Beat all elite 4 members.
-Lance's dragonairs proved useless and dragonite only made me use one full restore. His aerodactyl killed Charizard once though.
-Bruno wasn't tough but made me use some full restores.
-Beat my rival, the champion. His Blastoise was tough. I luckily only used one Max Revive because I did a critical hit with EARTHQUAKE. So yeah, lucky of not needing to use my other revive.

This was almost a solo run, since my team is:

All of these were around level 20, except for the LV 74 Charizard. The Gyarados was a HM slave with Strength, Surf and Rock Smash.
Gloom HM slave with Flash and Cut

Fearow with Fly.

CHARSUKE LV 74 Charizard
Earthquake
Slash
Flamethrower
Aerial Ace

That's it.

Quick update: I gave up getting a Wooper. I'll just do this with the same team as last time. Maybe add a Dugtrio or something cool like Gligar. Beat the Sprout Tower and made it all the way to Azelea Town. About to go talk to Kurt about this Rocket problem.

If no one minds, I would like to ask a couple of questions about this challenge.

I have always thought about playing monotype, but never actually tried it before. I have played Red, Yellow and Platinum, and am currently playing SoulSilver (but getting a little frustrated with having lots of Pokemon I do not like, and very few I do). An Emerald cartridge has just fallen into my hand today, so I was thinking about starting a game of it and playing monotype.

My first question is should I play monotype on a first play-through of a game (ie Emerald), or would I be strongly advised to play normally once and then go back, or perhaps use a different game altogether (eg Platinum/SoulSilver have more features/options and therefore superior)? Since I have plenty of experience in other games, I *think* I should be fine, but would like some feedback from others before trying.

My second question is to type. Since I played Red, I have liked the idea of playing an all Psychic team, and my favourite Pokemon is Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir. My concern is that Psychic Pokemon do not fall out of the sky early on, so the first few gyms may be painful; I think Abra was the only option prior to the first Gym in Platinum and there were none in Red/Yellow or SoulSilver. Would a Psychic monotype be fine for a first attempt, or should I try something easier (eg Water) or otherwise more numerous (eg Normal)?
First, i don't think it matters whether its your first play through of a game, it might make it easier if it is not, but my first play through of black of white is going to be a water monotype.

Second, type is really up to you, you have 17 to pick from. Psychic would be fine, and you can catch ralts before the first gym in emerald, and abra not far after. (although since neither can learn any none psychic moves until later, dark types might give you problems, and i know some random trainers have nuzleafs) The type you use is really up to you, i've done all the first 4 generations each with water, ground and flying, all of which were very enjoyable. It's completely up to you. try for a type that has pokemon capable of learning many different move types.

Just signed up today, so hello all! ^^ I've decided to do this challenge because I've been playing the games since Yellow came out, so I have at least one of every gen. So, I'm gonna play Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Pearl, and either Black or White (will decide once they come out). I've decided to go at it using all electric types.

Hello everyone! My name is Peter, and I joined the PC just to do some Challenges.

I have been playing Pokémon games ever since Red&Blue came out here in Austria (Europe, a little country next to Germany). I also played Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, Ruby and Pearl, Diamond and Platinum.

So you could say I am not a newbie to the Pokémon games. I love the idea of monotyping through all games in a row, so I decided to join this challenge.

I already monotyped through Diamond with the Fighting type, once, but most of my team there was cheated in so it didn't conform with the rules here. The team also raped whatever enemy I put in front of it so it was even more boring than not monotyping ^^

So now I will do a
UMC Ground on the following games:
  1. Leafgreen (On GBA)
  2. Soulsilver (On NDS)
  3. Emerald (Emulator, Can't find my Ruby cartridge)
  4. Diamond
  5. Black (Once it comes out in german)

I decided to go with the newer games for the first two Generations because I just can't stand the sight of the older games anymore. I loved them at the time, and played them to death, but I just prefer the newer versions.

Please also note that I'm playing all these games in the german versions. I'll try to search for the english Pokémon and attack names most of the time, sometimes I might be lazy and translate them myself or just leave the german term. If you havea any questions or corrections for me, I'm always happy to learn!

I already started on Leafgreen and I'll give you all an update this week, time permitting (I'm a student and January is the busiest month of the semester, with exams all over the place).

I'm really looking forward to this,
Cheers,
Peter

Ultimate Flying Monotype Challenge
Update #3

Reached Vermillion City and explored around.
Exited east and battled some of the trainers and did some grinding.
Healed my Pokémon and boareded the S.S Anne.
Battled ALL the trainers, got ALL the items and battled my rival Gary on the S.S. Anne, obtained HM01 Cut and disembarked off the S.S. Anne.
Healed up my Pokémon and went to take on Vermillion City Gym
Battled the trainers in there and solved the puzzle, onto LT. Surge!
Had some trouble with him considering he has the advantage over type, Flying being weak to Electric but after a few hard hits I managed to defeat LT. Surge but only by a flash.
Obtained the Thunder Badge & TM26 (Thunderbolt... doing a Flying Monotype) anyway, onto Celadon City!

Current Team

Final Pearl Update! Flying UMC Done!

Started in Sunnyshore City.

Spoiler:
- Volkner:

- After surfing to Victory Road, I did EV training first, then got Earthquake and taught it to Claw, taught Cross Poison to Shadow, and had Hawkeye forget Fly for Brave Bird.
- Made it through Victory Road and taught Stone Edge to Claw (forgot Strength).
- The final battle with Hal was next:

- Then it was time for the final Elite Four Challenge:

Team effort here. I still had Drifter in reserve I think.

Claw was the key here. Although no Ground moves can be used here, Sandstorm helped kill all of my team members (except Claw), and then Claw was able to get a Swords Dance, then OHKOed Hippowden with Earthquake for the win.

- Used all my Rare Candies here to raise my team a couple levels each.

Claw set up 3 Sword Dances on Rapidash, then swept. Drifblim's Aftermath killed Claw, leading to my first Elite Four win without a Pokemon out. Lol.

I reset here once out of frustration because Boss got critted with a Thunderbolt from Mr. Mime when he had several Defend Orders set up. The second time, I didn't bother with the setup, and contributions from Boss (Attack Order) and Hawkeye finishing off Bronzong with Close Combat led to an successful win.

During this battle, I set up Boss with 6 Defend Orders, and after taking out Milotic and Gastrodon, she ended up getting Garchomp and Lucario to Struggle to death with the help of a few PP restoring items on Boss and her Pressure ability. Boss almost got Spiritomb (who switched out earlier) as well, but Embargo forced Boss to Struggle to death as well, taking Spiritomb with her. Roserade took out Hawkeye with a Sludge Bomb OHKO, then Shadow Flew (lol) Roserade to death for the win!!!

Sorry for the inactivity and not posting updates on my old monotype challenges.
I cancelled the Ultimate Challenge idea, instead I'm going to start beating every region with every type, and then move onto the next region.
I've already finished my fire on Kanto, with an ending team of Charizard and Flareon.*I forgot levels and movesets it was a while ago sorry*
I will be starting my water right now and I'll hopefully be able to post progress either later on tonight or tommorow.

This challenge is the 10th on the first page. Unacceptable. Let me help by starting a Steel Sapphire.

Edit 1: Chose Mudkip, beat Roxanne, got to Brawly with an Aron. At first I was like "Oshi- what am I going to do?" But then I was like "Oh yeah, I can skip him." Going on to Wattson.

Lol. I'm thinking about starting another monotype myself, by man I have other ones to do. I still can't really believe that my flying ultimate one is over, the last game took forever (I officially hate sinnoh now, even Hoenn is better). I may try to do something like an ultimate...Normal...maybe. Idk. we'll see. It won't be for a while, though.

Join the club. There were like five people in the CI&D (myself included) that were complaining about how long sinnoh took.

Oh yeah, update: I skipped Brawly, beat Wattson, uh, got my team worked out (Aggron, Aggron, Metagross, Skarmory), and now I'm going through the Fiery Path.

I dont mind sinnoh. i did on my flying run, but on water and ground it went fairly fast, especially my ground run.

also, how are you gonna get Metagross? last i checked you can't get beldum until after the elite four, i may be wrong though.

Anyways, in my fighting UMC...

One down, four to go.

Final Team:

Primeape (Lvl 51)
-Rock Slide
-Thunderbolt
-Low Kick
-Strength

Hitmonchan (lvl 47)
-Double Edge
-Agility
-Fire Punch
-Ice Punch

Poliwrath (lvl 53)
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Psychic
-Hypnosis

Poliwrath was my MVP. Loved that guy ever since the johto leg of my water run.
Speaking of Johto, its time for crystal.

And i have literally spent 2 hours looking for a heracross. poliwhirls head must be KILLING him. Okay, thats it i am DONE for the night. If anyone knows where the Heracross are, let me know. Finding a shiny is easier than this...

Dammit, you're right. Don't know why I thought you got Beldum at the same time as Dive. Well, time to rework my team...

And I know for a fact you can catch Heracross between Lake of Rage and Mahogany, also between New Bark and Cherrygrove. Try New Bark to Cherrygrove.

Poison Sting

Toxicity

Level 45

Poison Sting
Ice Beam
Thunder Bolt

Poison Ivy

Level 47

Toxic
Solarbeam

Pentapox

Level 47

Poison Sting

Blizzard

And there you have it, the team that conquered Kanto! :)
Spoiler:
Weary from his travels and the battles he'd fought; Acidity made his way home to Pallet Town. As he walked and his faithful pokemon slept, he remembered his journeys through the Kanto region. He remembered Brock's face when he, Acidity and Toxicity the pair of Nidoran he'd met on his tenth birthday deftly mopped the floor with his 'rock-hard pokemon'. He remembered when his and the Bulbasaur's, which would later become PoisonIvy, eyes connected. He remembered finding the Venonat which he had no idea could be found in the area on Cerulean Cape, and named him VenomWing, for his evolution.
Acidity trudged through the sleeping city of Viridian. He hadn't realised his conquest of the Elite 4 had taken so long, but he didn't mind. The city, even bathed in the faint glow of the moon, shone green. His mind was cast to Giovanni and Team Rocket. Would they really disband simply because he'd gotten in the way of their plans so many times? Acidity found it unlikely but he was the strongest trainer in Kanto now, he could send them packing if necessary.
The tired champion made his way through Route 1 uneventfully, avoiding disturbing the families of Rattata and Pidgey, his mind set on returning home and telling his mother all about his adventure from when he last spoke to her, and indeed of his new status... And who could forget; of the prospect of journeying to the Johto region, for an entirely new adventure...

Johto Saga

Update 0.5

  • Named myself Acidity (of course) and went through the beginning sequences, getting a starter and going to Mr.Pokemon and back.
  • Sharked in Acidity and Toxicity (NidoranM and NidoranF) as well as two Moon Stones for future use. (you can get them in Mt Moon but that's ages away, I'll try not to use them until I have to though, I might make it there without using the sharked ones)
  • Trained the Nido-duo both to level 8, having them learn Horn Attack (Acidity) and Scratch (Toxicity) and reached Violet City.
Not much of an update I know but, 'Real Life' calls... :( Hopefully I'll get more done today but I think since my last post was... um... a long time ago, I dunno.

The people that read my posts will know that I'm scarily inactive most of the time and my posts are few and far between. I'm sure you're used to it by now. :P

Just beat Sabrina in Saffron City. Current team:

Pikachu (Piika) Lv. 46
-- Thunderbolt
-- Submission
-- Body Slam
-- Double Team

Jolteon (Thunders) Lv. 47
-- Pin Missile
-- Double Kick
-- Take Down
-- Quick Attack

And yes, I still have my two HM slaves. They are both still on level 10. Sabrina was pretty easy thanks to Jolteon's Pin Missile, but I still had to switch out once to Pikachu and revive Jolteon. Now, I'm currently on Route 13, on my way to Fuschia City.
