@Myrr - Oh my apologies. For a second I remembered Wallace being 6th or 7th Gym wise. It's been forever since I've played R/S/E...

Quick Update on Ice run.

Spoiler:
Hacked in a Lapras for the beginning, main reason being that I can get Lapras earliest if it was Friday, and I don't feel like messing with clocks, so I just threw her in my team first; everyone else has to wait until Ice Cave like normal.

After that took off to beat a few gyms. Falkner gave me no troubles, as did Bugsy. Whitney was a close call. Running in with only a Lapras I thought I could get the upper-hand as I was several levels higher than her Pokemon. However, her Miltank still managed to put me in a scare with Rollout. My moves did less damage than I had originally hoped, and had I missed my last attack I would have needed to redo her battle as I was in a positon where even if I fully healed May, she was on Roll #4 or 5 of a Super Effective attack. I don't believe I would have been walking out of that just fine had I not gotten the hit off first.
Sudowoodo almost got me. I missed my first two Water Guns and got pelted with some Rocks. Still took it down though.

Morty was another easy Gym Battle. Surf was quick to send his Pokemon back to the grave, with the exception of his Gengar which, luckily for me, missed 2 Hypnosis'. With 4 Badges under my belt, I headed to Olivine to continue on with the story and grab myself my 2nd Pokemon.

Once in Olivine Town I went straight for the Rod, and headed to the harbor to catch myself a Shellder. After killing the initial one off of a critical, I thought "Oh it's fine, my first try was a Shellder, they can't be that rare," which was a wrong assumption... I don't quite know how long I spent, but my May went from Lv.34 to Lv.40 over the course of searching for another Shellder...

After finally grabbing a Shellder I decided to call break and start getting some classwork done.

In short; 4 Badges down, and got another addition to the team.

Current Team:

May the Lapras - Lv.40
Surf
Body Slam
Ice Beam
Mist

Tap Deck the Shellder - Lv.20
Tackle
Withdraw
Supersonic
Aurora Beam

Quick question to anyone that has used one, is Delibird worth it? I was thinking about using Dewgong in my final spot, but after the shenanigans it put me through in Yellow I was thinking about replacing it, but having never really had any interest in Delibird I'm not really sure if it would hold it's own better than Dewgong. Any thoughts on Dewgong v Delibird for the slot choice?

No, Delibird is soooo not worth it. It's stats are the pits and don't even make the few STAB moves it can learn worth the time and energy. Hustle is an okay move, but it's unpredictable and you don't know whether it will injure or heal your opponents. I suggest that if you need a new ice member, go with Sneasel or Swinub (if your playing HGSS, level Piloswine up w/ Ancientpower for Mamoswine), or keep Dewgong around. Anything is better than Delibird.

I'm playing through Crystal right now, so there's only 7 available Pokemon. Never planned on keeping Delibird past Gen 2, but was just wondering if it was worth the trouble while I was considering him. Never had a Delibird so I didn't know his stats were that bad.

Thanks for the input, I'll be putting up with Dewgong's shenanigans again this Generation I guess.

O_O 7?!?!? Ugh... That's awful :( So basically, the available Pokemon can make a full team without any alternatives (unless you breed the same couple of Pokemon over and over).

Aish... And I thought Hoenn had slim pickings for Fire types between Torchic, Numel, Torkoal, Slugma, and Vulpix...

(Torchic family and Vulpix family are FTW, but Numel, Slugma, and Torkoal are horridly sluggish. I like fast sweepers.)

Hoenn update
Faced Roxanne, Brawly, and Watson with only Amber and beat them single handed. She's now a lvl 36 Blaziken with Peck, Double Kick, Bulk Up, and Blaze Kick. Caught a couple of Numel. Named the boy Danson and the girl Victoria. Victoria's in the box and I'm training Danson. Taught him Strength. Caught an Oddish for Flash and Cut purposes, a Poochyena for Rock Smash, and a Marill for Surf/Dive.

Current goal: Get Danson to Amber's lvl then fight team Aqua/Magma/Whoever at Meteor Falls.

My final team's moveset for Fire Red and SS (in Ninetales case) was:

Jiyong/Charizard: Slash (level up) |Smokescreen (level up)|Blast Burn [can't learn this until you go to the Sevii(?) Islands post E4] or Flamethrower (level up) |Aerial Ace (TM)

Junhyung/Flareon: Bite (level up) |Dig (TM) |Smog (level up)|Fire Spin (level up)

Jaejoong/Arcanine: Flamethrower (level up as a Growlithe) |Extremespeed Must evolve at level 49 if you want both Flamethrower & Extremespeed) |Toxic (TM) |Roar (comes w/ @ catch)

Amber/Ninetales: Flamethrower (level up)|Grudge (level up as a Vulpix. idk if this was available during Gen III. If you're playing the originals, then it's not available) |Toxic (TM) |Quick Attack (comes w/ @ catch)

Hope this is helpful.

@Cardwell - Your Heracross pain was shared and I never curse this onto anyone. I would probably have an easier time finding a Shiny than finding a Jynx... I salute your patience!

@jt4811 - I'm not sure what Generation you're playing (R/B/Y or FR/LG) but assuming it's FR/LG I might have a Flareon moveset that could prove helpful.

Flareon-
Flamethrower (Level Up, at 52 I believe, until then just stick with another Fire move) or Bite if you think you've got enough Fire moves in your team.
Iron Tail (TM23, Game Corner)
Dig (You can buy more at Celadon in FR/LG I believe) or if you decide to keep Dig on Charizard Shadow Ball? (TM30 Game Corner) it could prove useful against Agetha, Sabrina, and Rival.
Toxic(TM06)/Smog (Level up, at 42) or Sunny Day

Should cover a few options your team might be in need of.

O_O 7?!?!? Ugh... That's awful :( So basically, the available Pokemon can make a full team without any alternatives (unless you breed the same couple of Pokemon over and over).

I believe in Hoenn I've only got 2 Pokemon that can be legitily obtained... Snorunt/Glalie, and the Spheal family. It's going to be bad news bears.

Anyway quick update full of rage. Lots and lots of rage.

Spoiler:
After the trouble of finding a Shellder I started through the story again, and eventually found myself against Chuck. It was pretty bad, Shellder was maybe 26 at the time, and with Lapras being at a huge disadvantage against Dynamic Punch I was a little nervous. Luck was on my side though as I sat through 4 or so misses from his Poliwrath.

After that it was Jasmine's turn, and she stood no chance. The Magnemite's were my biggest worry, but a single Surf took those down real quick. And Steelix didn't stand a chance against a Super Effective STAB'd Surf from something 5 levels higher than it.

With 7/8 of the Jhoto badges under my belt I headed through story events and took out Pryce with no trouble.

Then came Rage Time!

I entered Ice Cave thinking it would be my favorite place in all of Crystal as it would give me most of my remaining team. Oh boy, was I wrong. I went in at Night, knowing I would have no chance of a Swinub and thought I would run through, grab a Sneasel and Jynx, and train them to party levels before heading to sleep and grabbing Swinub and Seel when I woke up.
I grabbed Sneasel with no trouble, but here's where the bad news bears kicks in. I know Jynx has a 5% encounter rate at night, but I've never had THIS hard of a time finding a 1-5% chance encounter.
I lost track of time as I was in there for so long, but considering I took a break roughly 1 hour 30 minutes in, and it's roughly 1 hour 40 minutes after my break, I think it's safe to say I spent 3+ hours on B3F with no luck what so ever...

Through my time in Ice Cave looking for a Jynx, my newly caught Sneasel went from Lv.22 to Lv.46, My Lapras went from Lv.40 to Lv.46, and my Shellder went from Lv.34 to Lv.51. I finally just gave up and decided I'd find her after work. Jynx carried my team in Yellow, but this is ridiculous how much vacation time does she need?

In short, 7 Badges down. I now officially despise Ice Cave. I'll probably be strolling through the game for awhile after this major unintended grind-fest...

Current Team:

May the Lapras - Lv.46
Ice Beam
Body Slam
Surf
Rain Dance

Tap Deck the Cloyster - Lv.51 @ Quick Claw (Does it really need it anymore? Hahaha)
Ice Beam
Surf
Supersonic
Clamp

Shredder the Sneasel - Lv.47
Fury Swipes
Faint Attack
Quick Attack
Screech

The move sets are dull at the moment, but I'll be using some of the TMs I've been hoarding since the beginning of the game as soon as I get a full team so I have everything laid out, making it a little easier to think.

I would've tried to hatch the Odd Egg you get at the Day-care into a Smoochum earlier. Save before you get the egg, then hatch it right there, until you get one. 50% shiny too lol, although the IVs for shinys in Gen II are horrible.

I guess it's a moot point now, though. By the way people, I'm trying to think about my next ultimate monotype run. What types do you recommend? I was thinking normal is a decent one, as it has good variety without being OP like Water is. Any other types you guys can recommend, and why? I already did a flying one, if you don't see it in my sig.

-Insert obligatory Pikachu rage face here-

I can't believe I forgot about that egg. Doesn't it give you Dizzy Punch or something? Yeah, forget Ice Cave I'll just abuse to get a Smoochum from that. I'm sure Dizzy Punch will prove useful. Good thing I checked this before going back to Ice Cave, as it was not a moot point. I gave up after 3+ hours of looking and was going to continue it later today/tomorrow. Many thanks on the reminder.

As for the your monotype, you could try Bug? The stats on most of them aren't too impressive and the move pools for a lot of them are lacking, but a mono-bug team can handle more than you'd think. I've actually done an Ultimate Mono with Bugs before and it's not too difficult if you set them up right. Other than that Normal seems like your other bet.

So good news. I'm using two Aggrons and a Skarmory for my Steel (ruby) monotype. The one that I've had knows EQ, Brick Break, Iron Tail, and Thunder (R.I.P. Rock Tomb), and I just caught my second one that's going to know Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Surf. So, I caught him and checked his nature, which was Modest, which means -Atk and +Sp. Atk. Couldn't have asked for a better nature. Just wish the one I had was adamant.

Caught a Zigzagoon for HM duties. Can't believe I still needed HM duties after I got all 8 badges. Taught him Rock Smash and Cut so I could do the Trick House

Did the trick house until I got the Magnet (6 trick houses.)

Sold everything I had to get enough coins to buy Flamethrower. Taught it to Aggron2

Got Ice Beam and Thunderbolt, taught them and surf to Aggron2.

Decided to finally do Victory Road.

Almost blacked out to a particularly tough Tentacruel. Made it about 2/3 of the way before I had to go back. Oh well, I'll finish this tomorrow maybe...

Edit for jd: Aww, but water is so fun...

I liked doing Ghost, and am planning on doing something like Ground or Poison next. You should do one of those.

water and ground are both fun, although a tad on the easy side. flying, we've both done, so that's out. Fighting is kind of... lame, since looking ahead, theres not a lot of fighting type pokemon to use.

my gen I electric run was rather fun, so maybe try that one? although your gen II team would be the same, but swapping ampharos for pikachu/raichou, and gen 3 would be hard to get started on.

for a real challenge you could try something like poison, bug or grass (i hate grass)

edit: Since no one has posted since my last on, and this cant wait, i shall edit.

Need i say more?

You just screwed your Vulpix over :( Ninetales can't learn anything once she's evolved.

Yes you did, so catch another one and level it up as a Vulpix this time.

By the way, could I potentially use Green version for Kanto?

Since you evolved vulpix right away, you're pretty much limited to TM moves for ninetails. i'd go with fire blast (tm 38, you win it from blanie), double edge (tm 10, found in the rocket hideout in celedon), toxic (tm 06, you win it from koga) and mimic (tm 31, gift from copy cat girl for giving her a pokedoll, it is AMAZING, copy fissure off one of giovannis guys, use an x accuracy and it cant miss, copy psychic from agathas gengar, copy ice beam from lane's dragonair, ext ect)

as for falreon, it learns flamethrower at level 52, you can teach it hyper beam with tm 15, which is bout at the game corner. the other two moves i have no idea. hope that helped.

It's still Kanto, so yea. I don't see any reason why not. You'll just be navigating through a ton of Japanese text.

@jd: The myrrh says...

moooooooo.

But yeah, you're fine if you want to use green.

@jt: well, you done goofed when you chose yellow instead of blue. I did a dual Charizard + Magmar run and it was very nice. Magmar is a beast with Psychic.

In other news, I grinded my team to level 49-51 in my HG Water mono.

Time to play Ruby Steel mono.

Edit: made it out of VR. And oh boy, Sydney is going to be tough. Sharpedo hurts...
The only way I can get past Sharpedo right now is if I send out Electrike and he uses Crunch or Slash instead of Surf and I paralyze him with Static. I can OHKO him if I get him paralyzed. But he can OHKO me if I don't...
Spoiler:

So eventually, after suiciding into the Elite Four a few times, my physical based Aggron got strong enough to OHKO Mightyena with Black Belt powered Brick Break, if he doesn't get intimidated. So, I led Zigzagoon, who immediately died to Crunch. Aggron OHKO'd Mightyena. Sharpedo was coming up, so I switched to Electrike, who took Crunch like a boss and Static Paralyzed Sharpedo. He was then OHKO'd by Brick Break. After that, 3 Brick Breaks later, I was done with Sydney.

I switched Black Belt for Metal Coat and fought Phoebe. Iron Tail + Curse = Duskull dead. I switched to Skarmory to get rid of Curse for her second Duskull. I first thief'd its Sitrus Berry, then used Fly, and soon died to Ice Beam. Without the Sitrus Berry, Aggron 2HKO'd with Earthquakes. He then went on to either OHKO or 2HKO with either Iron Tail or Earthquake. They couldn't hurt me with their puny NVE moves.

Glacia was really tough. I healed Aggron and reswitched to Black Belt, as well as switching the other Aggron's (who from now on will be referred to as Aggron2) Magnet to Charcoal. Aggron took an Ice Beam and OHKO'd with Brick Break. Sealeo was slower than me, but didn't die to Brick Break, and got me into yellow with Surf. Then he died. The next Sealeo came out, who opted to use Hail instead of Dive. 2 BB's did the trick. Then came Walrein. I switched to Aggron2, hoping to do some damage with Thunderbolt or something, but Walrein was faster, and OHKO with Surf. I then sent out Marshtomp, healed Aggron, and revived my Pokemon until Hail ran out (he used Blizzard I think on Marshtomp, and it missed the first time). Full health Aggron was still outsped by Walrein and got down to about 10 health in one surf, but Walrein was at half after one BB. So, I switched to Skarmory, which barely survived a Surf, rehealed Aggron, and then finished Walrein off with one final BB (at like 10 health).

Drake was much easier. I saved after Glacia thinking that I wouldn't get very far against Drake, so not everyone (of my good Pokemon) were fully healed. Also I switched back to Metal Coat and Charcoal -> NevermeltIce. Shellgon used Rock tomb and was 2HKO by Iron Tail. So were his two flygon, using Sandstorm and Dragonbreath instead of the Ground type move I'm sure they had. Then was Salamence. He was able to 3HKO me with Flamethrower, which I'm sure I could have 3HKO him with Iron Tail, but for some reason, I thought I needed to use Ice Beam instead, so I tried switching to Aggron2, who died in one hit (from half health). I then revived and fully healed him with 2/3 of Aggron's life, and then switched to a slave so that Aggron2 could come in for free. Ice Beam did like 1/3 of Salamence's health. Poo. Aggron finished him and Altaria off with like one more Hyper Potion.

I went on to Steven, afraid of what kind of nasty things his Metagross was going to do to my team. Pretty sure I went with Soft Sand for Aggron, Metal Coat for Skarmory, and Charcoal for Aggron2. Not that important I guess. Also I led with Aggron2, since Skarmory could only use NVEx2 Steel Wing and Aerial Ace. He fainted to a few Flamethrower/Thunderbolts, but he laid one layer of Spikes. Next was Aggron, so I switched to my Aggron. I did 3/4 of his health with an EQ, he did barely over half with his own EQ. I decided that I might as well finish him off, but he surprisingly switched to Metagross, which took a Crit EQ and died in one hit. O_o o_O I celebrated. He then was about to send out Claydol, but I had a fairly underleveled Skarmory to fight him with. Ancient Power did like 1/5 of my health, and EQ didn't effect me. Wootz. Once he ran out of damaging moves, I switched to Aggron2, who Surfed all over him (twice, because Steven used a Full Restore). Aggron was coming back out, so I switched to Aggron, who finished him off with EQ. Next was Armaldo and Cradidly, but I don't really remember them, so I'm guessing they weren't that bad. Apparently I switched to Skarmory at some point, because that was who I used at the end.

The End.

New Ulitmate Montotype Challenge: Normal Type.

Going with Green to start. Using an english translated one, which isn't perfect, but most of the moves and items are readable.

Right now I started the game with name of Norm and Rival as Joe.

- Caught Rattata (Fang) and used him against Brock, then caught a Clefairy (Fairy) in Mt. Moon and evolved it with the Moon Stone right away.
- Went with those two until Celadon City, where I caught a Doduo (Twin).
- After I beat TR hideout, I got Snorlax (Sleep), then after finally saving enough money picked up Porygon (Pory).
- I also have Farfetch'd (Dux) as a Cut slave, which I got in Vermilion City.

Some screenshots of my journey:

Spoiler:
I know it's not much but it's what I have.

Took a ton of Tail Whips on Onix with Bide, then Hyper Fang was good.

- Forgot Misty's screenshot. Fairy's Mega Punch was the winner here.

3 Digs FTW.

Easy with Fly/Drill Peck, although Fly missed a couple times so Twin went down, and Fairy finished it.

As of right now, I have 4 badges, and am currently training Porygon on Cycling Road.

Team Norm:

Pory the Porygon - L20
Moves: Psychic, Sharpen, Conversion, Tri Attack

Sleep the Snorlax - L35
Moves: Body Slam, Amnesia, Rest, Rock Slide

Twin the Dodrio - L36
Moves: Drill Peck, Fly, Fury Attack, Body Slam

Fang the Raticate - L36
Moves: Hyper Fang, Quick Attack, Double-Edge, Dig

Fairy the Clefable - L36
Moves: Mega Punch, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Bubblebeam

Dux the Farfetch'd - L12
Slave Moves: Cut

Well. You don't see those sprites every day.

Man you guys are just way too fast for me.

By the way, I guess those of you who post screens are playing on emulators, right?

This week on Cathar's UMC Ground:

Spoiler:
After the 4th badge (steamrolled with Bowser+Surf) I forgot that you can't get to Ice Path for ages but still went to Mahogany Town. Caught Red Gyarados, messed up Rocket Base. Then I tried to get to Ice Path. Guy still blocks me.
Then I defeat Pryce and get my 5th (lawl) badge from him. Guy still blocks my way to Ice Path. Realization dawns. He will block me until I clear out the Rockets from the Radio Tower fffffnnn.... *rage*
Swept the fighting and steel gym (both laughable, the fighting gym because my two main Pokémon were now ten levels over his, steel due to Double-Kick and Surf) and tried to avoid as many trainer battles on my way as possible, to make leveling Swinub easier.
Went to Ice Path, caugh Mom and Dad Swinub and now I'm breeding like crazy.
Since I'm a total noob to this, what are good egg moves / natures for baby Swinub?

Team Soulsilver:

Loverboy the Nidoking, Level 43
Spoiler:
I'm having sooo much fun with Attract on this guy. It's just hilarious.
Here's a list of some of his achievements in bringing love to the female Pokémon world: About a dozen random wild Pokémon just for fun, two Nidorinas, two Nidoqueen, Red Gyarados (lawl), all of the red-haired rocket woman's Pokémon in Mahogany base, all of the red-haired rocket woman's Pokémon in the Radio Tower.
Attract appears pretty broken. So far, there has been only one Pokémon that has managed to get more than one attack through after being in luvvv.

Bowser the Quagsire, Level 42
Spoiler:
The best Pokémon on the team. Pushed his defense a little with items and he can take pretty much any hit. He now knows Surf and Earthquake. Nuff said.

Everyone else is in the box because I am loaded up with Swinub eggs.
I'm thinking of ditching the Graveler for now, as I won't be able to trade until mid-february.
But who else to take on the team?

Until next time,

Cheers,
Peter

Right. The emulators also come with speed buttons and trading capabilities, too (for first three Gens), which make them even more convenient.
