I just took a look at your story--didn't read the entire thing (someday I'll start into it), but I can immediately discern that yours is very well written, far more so than Stephen's, which wasn't written so much as a literary piece as it was a fast-paced, high-action/high-dialogue. Stephen Huxman decided to characterize (
characterize, verb: turn into fanfic characters ;)) he and his Pokemon TCG fellows on a whim. He chose Hitmonchan because it was his favorite card. It's a story with action, comedy, friendship, romance, betrayal, intrigue, but above all speed and originality. Characters were defined through dialogue and verbs.
I wish I could link to it, but I don't know if that's allowed.... Sometime I'm planning on starting back up a site, and I hope to put it up there when I do. If you Google "Stephen Huxman", there's a FortuneCity site with the first ten chapters (which are rather light-hearted). :P
