Big update here. The speed button makes for fast Gen I games.

Spoiler:
  • Well, I went to fight TR in Celedon to get the Silph Scope and raise Flare as well.

Giovanni wasn't too hard once I switched to Nidorina lol.

  • After getting Fly and clearing out the Pokemon Tower, Flare was ready to fight Erika.

Ember knocked 'em dead, along with Confuse Ray to stop the lame Wraps. Ended up using my final Ember to take down Vileplume.

  • Then I went to Fuschia via the coast, finally catching Flare up to Nidoking and Nidorina's L38 levels.
  • At L35, Flare learned Flamethrower, and I grabbed a Fire Stone to evolve him into Ninetales.
  • Upon reaching Fuschia, I went into the Safari Zone and got Surf and also Strength from the Warden afterwards.
  • Taught Strength to Fairy, and then I went on a GRIND with Nidorina.
  • Beat up the trainers on Cycling Road with her, then went into the gym.

    Sweep with the overleveled Nidorina.

  • The gym got her to L49, so I used a Rare Candy to get her to L50, where she learned Double Kick. Moon Stone Time!
  • Taught Surf to Nidoqueen, and it was time to go Surfing to Cinnabar via the Seafoam Islands.
  • After navigateing through the Islands, killing Articuno with a couple Flamethrowers along the way, I realized I had forgotten the whole Saffron plot.
  • Flew back there and cleared out Sliph Co.

Saul was a joke now. Flare was able to Confuse hax Gyarados after a crit Hydro Pump hit really hard, and the rest were easy enough for him to survive and sweep.

Giovanni, more of the same. Got Flare and Nidoking's levels up to match Nidoqueen, so there ya go. Surf, Double Kick, and Body Slam were just too much.

  • Then I went back to Lavender and finally renamed Nidoking Rex and Nidoqueen Regina (Latin for King and Queen, doncha know).
  • Back in Saffron, I destroyed the Dojo, then went into Sabrina's Gym.

Sabrina wasn't too hard, my team was overleveled so Regina just killed em all before they could Psychic my team to death.

  • Back at Cinnabar, I got the Secret Key in Pokemon Mansion, then it was time to face Blaine.

Swift + Take Down took down all of 'em.

  • Flew to Viridian, and after a couple Pokemon Center visits, as Ground is a big weakness in my team (along with Water), I found myself in front on Giovanni.

Wasn't hard at all. Rex went down, so Regina cleaned up with Surf.

  • After healing up and teaching Earthquake to Rex, I saved on Rt. 22.

The next step is to fight Saul again and then navigate Victory Road to the Elite Four.

Team Ned:

Flare (Ninetales) - L54
Moves: Swift, Flamethrower, Confuse Ray, Take Down

Rex (Nidoking) - L54
Moves: Earthquake, Horn Drill, Rock Slide, Thrash

Regina (Nidorina) - L54
Moves: Body Slam, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Surf

And 3 slaves - Dux (Farfectch'd) with Cut and Fly, Fairy (Clefairy) with Strength, Flash and Teleport, and Digger (Diglett) with Dig.

I am not amused. ಠ_ಠ

UPDATE.

Spoiler:

*MickZagger picked up a Nugget and a Protein already. Awesome.
*Trained Aero up to level 11. She learned Quick Attack.
*Fought Bug Catcher Lyle in Petalburg Woods. All Wurmple team failed against Aero.
*Fought Team Magma Grunt after picking up a Parlyz Heal in the woods. I can already tell that the next two Gym Leaders will be easy. Yay, the dude gave me a Great Ball. Whoo.
*Got the Wailmer Pail and the Bullet Seed TM.
*Fought all the other trainers along the way to Rustboro. Aero learned Wing Attack.

To fast forward, I took out Roxanne, took out Brawly, and delivered Steven's letter.
*Also caught a Nincada and named it 'Aburame'. (Flash HM slave)
*Incognito evolved into a Grovyle during Roxanne's battle.

*Now at Slateport Beach, leveling Aero up so it can evolve (since I can't use it next gym)
*MickZagger finds another Nugget. Still haven't even entered a PokeMart.
*Aero evolves into a Swellow. Hopefully I can get Carvanha and Gulpin soon.

Currently busy looking for a Gulpin.

Incognito (Grovyle) Lv. 17

Aero (Swellow) Lv. 22

MickZagger (Zigzagoon, HM Slave) Aburame (Nincada, Flash HM Slave)

Finished the challenge for "N" on Blue.

Spoiler:
  • So first up was the Rt. 22 battle against Saul.

Easy. Rex led, then Regina finished. Her moveset is just amazing.

  • After making it through Victory Road, The Elite Four were ready for my challenge!
  • Lorelei:

She was taken care of pretty easily by Regina's Thunderbolt/Body Slam combo.

  • Bruno:

Rex dominated with Earthquake and some Thrashes. Helps that Poison is strong against Fighting defensively.

  • Agatha:

After Flare finally went down to her Arbok, Rex finished him off for the win.

  • Lance:

Lance isn't very scary in Gen I if you have Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. His Gen II counterpart is made even harder because there is no Ice Beam. Regina dominated with Ice Beam and Thunderbolt.

  • And the final battle with Saul!

Led with Rex, who Rock Slide'd Pigeot, EQ'd Alakazam and Rydon twice, then went down to Gyarados after missing twice with Rock Slide while Gyarados hit twice with Hydro Pump :\. Flare was up, and immediately went down to 2 Hydro Pumps while failing with Confuse hax. Regina Finished it off with Thunderbolt, Surfed Arcanine twice (after getting burned by Ember, wtf?), then 2 Ice Beams and a Body Slam took down Venusaur! I was now the champ!

    Some HOF screenshots:

Final Trainer shots:

Team Ned (Final):

Rex (Nidoking) - L58
Moves: Earthquake, Horn Drill, Rock Slide, Thrash

Flare (Ninetales) - L57
Moves: Swift, Flamethrower, Confuse Ray, Take Down

Regina (Nidorina) - L59
Moves: Body Slam, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Surf

And 3 slaves - Dux (Farfectch'd) with Cut and Fly, Fairy (Clefairy) with Strength, Flash and Teleport, and Digger (Diglett) with Dig.
************************
MVP: Regina for sure. Her moveset was the key to beating Lance and Saul at the end. Rex had great attack power, but his moveset was a bit limited at times, and Flare really only had Flamethrower to use against the big guns, although Confuse Ray is a great supporting move for him.

Challenge Complete.

Letter: S

UPDATE.

Spoiler:

*To fast forward, I defeated the 3rd-5th gyms. During this, Acidic evolved into a Swalot.
*I began to search for Carvanha. After finding one, I capture it, and name it 'Samehada'.
*Grinding Samehada is difficult, due to capturing it at level 10.
*Almost finished grinding. 8D Currently at Route 118's tall grass area.

-next day-

*Defeated Winona easily with Samehada, who is now a Sharpedo. Also, Incognito evolved into Sceptile, thus giving me my full party.
*Headed over to Lilycove, defeating everyone on the way.
*Caught a Wingull, named it 'SeaBird'. It's my new HM Fly slave, and I deposited Aburame.
*Magma steals the submarine, so I enter the hideout.
*Cleared the hideout and got the Master Ball. Headed to Mossdeep.
*Completely destroyed the entire gym with Samehada, as well as Tate & Liza with the combo of Samehada and Incognito. They didn't stand a chance.
*Caught a Tentacool as a HM Dive slave, named it 'Squilliam'.
*Entered the Seafloor Cavern. Had to get the cool-looking Spinda I caught to learn Strength. -_-
*Finished that, and went to the Cave of Origin. Caught Groudon with the Master Ball.
*Entered Sootopolis Gym. Incognito cleans house.
*I head into Victory Road.
*I beat Wally and finish it, but train my pokemon up a bit more before the E4.

-next day-
*Made it through the E4 with my Pokemon all in the early level 40s. It was slightly challenging, but that was to be expected. Acidic's Toxic stalling really helped.
*Defeated Steven, finally! It took several tries, because he kept getting random Critical Hits, but after he had a Meteor Mash miss and a Hyper Beam turn delay, Samehada dealed the final hit with Surf.

This challenge was really fun, as I love the 3rd generation. :3

FINAL TEAM:

Incognito (Sceptile) Lv. 43
Bashful
Leaf Blade, Pursuit, Screech, Slam

Aero (Swellow) Lv. 40
Serious
Aerial Ace, Endeavor, Focus Energy, Facade

Acidic (Swalot) Lv. 42

Samehada (Sharpedo) Lv. 44

MickZagger (Zigzagoon, HM Slave) SeaBird (Wingull, Fly HM Slave)

Update: Red Challenge With "T"

As far as I'm aware, the only T Pokemon I can use are Tentacool/Tentacruel, Tangela, and Tauros, so I can't get my first T Pokemon for awhile (though it's an interesting letter, and it requires the use of a bunch of Pokemon that I've never really used before, so I'm going to stick with it). I also don't have access to trading, so I'm just going to play through the beginning of the game as quickly as possible and get my first T Pokemon at the earliest available opportunity.

Progress:

Day 1:
-Chose Squirtle as my starter
-Beat Brock
-Squirtle evolved into Wartortle
-Beat Misty
-Got HM01 on the SS Anne
-Caught an Oddish for Cut
-Beat Lt. Surge with Wartortle (lvl. 32)
-Cleared Rock Tunnel
-Got Pokeflute and defeated Snorlax
-Got Super Rod and finally caught my first T Pokemon, Tentacool (NN FINALLY) (lvl. 5)
-Trained Tentacool to level 24 and called it a night

Day 2:
-Defeated Erika (Tentacool at level 26, with Acid, Supersonic, Wrap, and Water Gun) with lots of help from ongoing Wrap attacks
-Tentacool evolved into Tentacruel on Route 13
-Obtained Surf (taught it to Tentacruel), Strength (taught to Blastoise), and Fly (taught to a Spearow I caught)
-Caught Tauros in Safari Zone (NN TEMPER)
-Defeated Koga (Tentacruel at level 37, Tauros at level 35)
-Caught Tangela south of Pallet Town (NN TANGLES)
-Cleared Silph Co. (Tentacruel level 41, Tauros level 39, Tangela level 34)
-Defeated Sabrina
-Defeated Blane (Tentacruel level 45, Tauros level 42, Tangela level 38)
-Defeated Giovanni (Tentacruel level 46, Tauros level 43, Tangela level 41)
-Defeated rival outside of Victory Road

Elite Four Battle Details:
-Lorelei: Tauros easily destroyed her with his newly-taught Thunderbolt. Tentacruel helped a little.
-Bruno: Tangela for the Onixes, Tentacruel for the others.
-Agatha: Tentacruel for the first Gengar and Golbat, Tauros (+ Earthquake) for the rest of the team.
-Lance: Tauros + Thunderbolt for Gyarados, Tentacruel + Ice Beam or Surf for everyone else.
-Rival: A few difficulties thanks to confusion vs. Alakazam (and me being too stubborn to switch out), but other than that, it went smoothly. Tauros vs. Pidgeot, Alakazam, Gyarados, and Arcanine, Tentacruel vs. the rest. Tangela didn't have enough move variety to be all that useful.

Final Team:

Tentacruel (FINALLY) level 53
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Wrap
-Mega Drain

Tauros (TEMPER) level 49
-Earthquake
-Thunderbolt
-Blizzard
-Stomp

Tangela (TANGLES) level 41
-Absorb
-Bind
-Sleep Powder
-Solarbeam

Reflections: This challenge was a lot of fun. I've rarely used any of these Pokemon in my other games, and I enjoyed getting a chance to try using them. Tentacruel has a lot of decent movepool options for a quick in-game playthrough, and its Special is great in Red. Tauros also proved quite useful and versatile, though I wish it hadn't been such a pain to catch in the Safari Zone. Tangela wasn't terribly useful. Some of its stats were decent, but it just didn't have as broad a movepool as my other two team members, and by the time I acquired it, I was already used to the rest of my team (plus, getting it right before Cinnabar wasn't terribly convenient, given all of the fire-types).

I might consider continuing my challenge with the letter T in Gold, but we'll see how that goes. There are enough new T Pokemon in that game that it would probably provide a decent amount of variety.

you can have M (if somebody needs one)
im on diamond :)
You may have the letter E!
West, on a plane bound west
I see her stretching out below
Land, blessed mother land
The place where I was born

Scars, she’s got her scars
Sometimes it starts to worry me
Cause lose, I don’t want to lose
Sight of who we are

From the mountains high
To the wave-crashed coast
There’s a way to find
Better days I know

It’s been a long hard ride
Got a ways to go
This is still the place
That we all call home

Ian, you get H.

Have you noticed that sadness in your life
