I don't understand people who could say something like that. I keep hearing annoying misspellings of "than" into "then". "That one is bigger then the other one!" is wrong. I guess it's because the word sounds like that when spoken out loud? I dunno, I just know that I've never heard of "than" spelled like that.

Am I missing something?

though of course, if it's getting you worked up enough to start a rant thread, prehaps you should lighten up a bit? Personally I so far, being 15, have not had the 'then' and 'than' lesson. Which is sad. So please explain the difference so I can reattach the part of my brain that I'm apparently missing.

what katie said, lighten up. in our language "than" and "then" do sound pretty similar and are commonly confused, and it's a simple mistake that can be cleared up with an explanation.

'than' is used for comparisons

example: i'm smarter than you

while 'then' is used as an adverb pointing to a previous time or as another way to say "next" or as another way to follow up something.

examples: back then aaron carter could have been regarded as cute but now he has an odd-shaped face and never shaves and let's get real no one likes blonde stubble

they took my house then they took my kids ;-(

you want your daughter back alive? then follow my every command and meet me at the park with the money.

Yeah.. I get annoyed by it, too. I can understand if someone is trying to learn a new language or something.. but I would think by the age of 10/11.. they've been on this earth for that many years already and it's sad to know that either they weren't taught the simple difference.. or that they can't remember something so simple.

Same goes with "there," "they're," and "their."

Also, if you're going to be pedantic, at least use "see" instead of "hear", since there is no truly audible difference between how the two words are pronounced, and misspellings only apply to written English.

Then = after
Than = um how can I explain this. No, that's not the answer xD You use 'than' when you say he's fatter than his mom.

Get it? xD
Better simple definition:

Then is time related.

Than is used when comparing/contrasting things.

Hey, I got like 10 replies in 2 hours. I'm so proud of myself.

Sorry for starting a whole thread about this, but people, I get sooo pissed when somebody says "then" instead of "than"! "Hey, I used to be a cannibal!" "Oh? So what people did you prefer?" If you get what I mean.

Uhh, it sounds to me like you don't know that "then" is actually a word? That's what it seems like you're saying from your first post. If that's the case, then "then" is a word and I used it in its correct form in this very sentence. There are very many people who can't tell the difference between homophones. I know tons of people who write "Your stupid!!" instead of "You're stupid!!" and "their they are!" instead of "there they are!" It's simply lack of caring for grammar and spelling. They probably don't do too well in class. You seem very..personally insulted that someone would mess up the writing of a homophone, and for that I'm sorry, but learn to accept that not everyone is good in writing & literature lol... I used to get great marks in high school English but some of my best friends back then spelled atrociously.

You're not missing anything, they are... but you can't get mad at someone for not spelling right. Only if they do it purposely.

It drives me mad. I can deal with people who can't spell very well; my spelling is hardly perfect.
But you have to get your grammar right.

Look over there.
They're
really irritating.
That's theirs, not yours!

You're an arse.

You're not missing anything. Those people are. You know what they're missing? A piece of their brain. I am absolutely horrified of bad grammar and that also annoys me like hell. THERE IS A FREAKING DIFFERENCE! xD

Quoted and bolded for the irony I somehow knew I would find before I even started looking. (See: Grammar errors)

At the thread...

Y'know, the human brain works differently than you think it does. What these people are doing is perfectly normal and not related to their intelligence. Just saying, you're going to be very unhappy if you let perfectly normal things like this upset you.

What the hell are you talking about? I don't see anything inherently wrong with what you bolded. If you're talking about sentence structure, then you're way off your horse, because that's a varying art (I've seen Ray Bradbury take up nearly a page with a single sentence). Getting a word totally wrong, like "their" instead of "they're", that's what this thread is about. If you really wish to get picky, then what I bolded in your quote is both a fragment and missing a period.

Of course, there's a reason I didn't highlight the errors of people who weren't complaining about people who make errors, Richard. That wouldn't be irony with a point. It'd just be rude, which was ironically the point.

This thread is ridiculous. I HATE people who harp on grammer, especially on a forum! Its not like people are writing formal essays here. Does it really matter?
Yes it matters a lot. Try l33t sp33k1nG and the mods will throw a banhammer at you if not then a simple infraction.

Im not talking about that. Do simple grammatical errors ,like using "Then" when you should have used "Than", really matter?

Yes because that will mislead the reader.
No, you wont. Were not computors, we have an amazing power called assumption. If you see that they wrote a homophone wrong then/than (I dont even know) your brain will automaticly guess what they mean.

Well at least you have time to think on such small error.
