Hi,

I have a question, when you download an .mkv format video, and then you convert it to .mp4 format will it still contain subtitles? The reason I'm asking this is because I;ve downloaded a couple .mkv ones and they come out with no subtitles, when it says that they will contain them.

Thanks.

It depends on type of subtitles. If they are hard subs (they are in video and you don't have to activate them) then if you convert the video subtitles will stay. But if they are just soft subs (you must activate them in player) then if you convert the video subtitles won't be in the new video.

How do you know the difference? I mean I've downloaded .avi files that had subs then converted them to .movie (or iPod Classic format) and they stayed. Are those hard subs?

Yeah, hard subs are subtitles that are in the movie file itself -- they're not separate 'text' that is then put on top of the video, like soft subs are.

You can tell if a video includes soft subs if you can turn them on in, say, VLC. (Video -> Subtitles)
Ohh.

They don't have soft sub. then.

Thanks for the help.

Just like wakachamo explained =) And if you download avi files with subtitles which are not in separate file (srt, ass, etc...) then you can be sure it's hard sub because avi files don't have the possibility like mkv =)

Oh. Is it possible to still transfer the subs even if they are Soft Subs?

I think you can extract the subtitles if they are softsubs, and load them into a video. Subtitle formats need a video player that can read them and is compatible with their extension. So, check whether the video player you are using can support those file formats before transferring them.
Oh okay. I'm using "Handbrake" but I'm still learning about it at the moment.

MKV is a container format, as are AVI and MP4. Containers usually contain two or three things:
-video (might be H.264, H.263/xvid, Theora, or something else)
-audio (might be AAC, MP3, DTS, or something else)
-subtitles (also might be in one of a few different formats)
If it's just a standard SRT subtitle stream, I think MP4 should be able to handle it. If it's not showing up, try demuxing it from the MKV (mkvextract + mkvextractgui) and remuxing it into the MP4 (mp4box or YAMB). If it's an ASS or SSA subtitle stream, I'm not sure if MP4 supports it.
