run any app off a USB drive?

MS Office will not run off of a USB drive because of how it is licensed. The only plausible way you could do it is if you had a volume license copy, but those cost a small fortune and even then it's iffy. Same with other applications. They want you to pay for a license for each computer you own.

You have to pretty much settle for the portable apps suite, since they mod programs specifically for this purpose. Their alternative to Office is OpenOffice which is just as good.

Portable Ms Office? Google Docs :)
Or get yourself a pendrive based Linux if you can handle it... It's far more personalised.

There used to be a software: MojoPac? for WinXP... It makes your windows profile portable.

Apart from that, just check out portable apps like how Yellow said :P
