The Pokemon franchise has existed for around fifteen years. For some of us, that means Pokemon has been around since we were still picking our noses (hopefully?). I had a discusion with my cousin today whether or not Pokemon can keep on going past the fifth generation. The question is whether Nintendo will simply keep making more Pokemon, anime episodes, manga, and games or whether it'll just release a final series and be done with it. Looking at other series that have been around much longer, the thing that allows games like Mario, Metroid, Sonic, Superman, etc to keep going is that they're primarily static, that is they don't change (in contrast to Pokemon, where we get a new set of Pokemon, characters, and region every few years). Eventually it will come to whether Nintendo can think of any new Pokemon ideas or people simply abandoning Pokemon altogether.

Your thoughts?

I think that Nintendo will come up with more Pokemon.
I'm wondering if they'll create a new game, but with all the Pokemon from every region instead of a whole new one.
But that'll only go so far. Again, they'll eventually just run out of ideas.

Once they run out of main games ideas, and ideas for new pokemon, the spinoffgames willl rise. Brawler games, racing games, games where your the pokemon, trying to find your daddykins.
But I don't think it'll come to that. at least not in my lifetime. hopefully.

It'll probably be around for a few more years, at least. So far, the level of mediocrity in Pokemon character development isn't glaringly obvious.

I think Nintendo is going to keep coming up with new Pokemon ish, as long as they make money from it. As soon as it becomes unprofitable, they'll wash their hands of it as soon as they can.

I think it'll come to a point where Game Freak realizes that they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for pokemon ideas and will instead focus on expanding the scope of the gameplay itself, making larger regions, more epic quests, and longer games overall.

I'm guessing this threshold will be after about 1000 species are created, or about the eighth or ninth generation at the current rate. XD

I personally think that Pokemon will continue. I envision at least another 3-5 Generations of Pokemon to come, which means we'll have about 12-20 more years of Pokemon, after the conclusion of the current Fifth Generation (which by default seems to be 4 years; 2014 for Gen. V).

Why do I say that? Well for one, because they've pretty much set themselves up to create new Pokemon. Just like for Kirlia, there's probably going to be an alternate evolution for Gochimiru to evolve into a male-only Pokemon, to essentially make a pair for Gochiruzeru.

...but also because the idea pot hasn't run dry, quite yet... if I sat down for a while, I could probably think of a few ideas for new Pokemon that could be included in the next Generation, and really, that's kind of where my optimism comes from when I say at least another 3-5 Generations of Pokemon. There'll always be someone at Game Freak coming up with ideas for new Pokemon; be it from those who have worked with them from the beginning, or some new employees they've hired. Ideas will always, in theory, be infinite for the Pokemon franchise.

That, and as long as we keep throwing money at them when each Generation is released, they'll have more and more incentive to get to work on the next, and start coming up with new Pokemon for the Sixth Generation... and the Seventh... and the Eight... and the Nineth... and the Tenth...

What I would like to see most I think is the games for DS made for wii, so that they can be played on the big screen. I think I would really enjoy that.

Also, on another note. I think that a finale game should be constructed to include all regions and pokemon from every generation.
This is one of the reasons I think it should be made playable on a tv since it would be a massive game.
Brand new storyline, with new characters again, but incorporating everything from all the previous games.
I can feel your fever, taking over me.

Honestly, giving it to Disney would be scraping the bottom of the barrel. I mean honestly, who the heck would be the male character? Mickey Mouse?

If I remember correctly Black/White became the highest pre-order in Japan with around 1.5 million units.

No, they won't stop making Pokemon, the manga, nor the anime. Far too profitable.

Plus they have the third Gen 5 game and Ruby/Sapphire remakes, which should account for the next 3-5 years.

Your horrible underestimation of the creative potential of the Disney corporation aside, where did you even pull the idea of selling the franchise from? From where I'm sitting you're the first person to mention it. XD

Is it me, or does someone remake this thread every time the old one finally dies?

That's not entirely true. Although the franchises you mentioned don't replace they're characters every few years, they still change things up and try things new. Compare Mario Sunshine to Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 to Metroid Other M, etc.

Pokemon is probably going to stay around for a long time. Right now I'm concerned whether Pokemon will attempt to re-invent itself in 6th gen, or try to be BW plus.
Well my personal wish since after seeing the fourth generation was that they would just stop making new Pokemon and instead create new regions with the same Pokemon. Although I guess at this point I sort of take it back since I really like the V generation, but as of now I'd like it if they focused more on new regions and adventures instead of new Pokemon.

I think eventually they may come to that realization too and move the gaming franchise into that direction. I honestly would have been completely satisfied if they only stuck with 150 Pokemon and just created a whole new region, and perhaps even a completely different storyline then the one that we're all used to.

Pokemon isn't going to be thrown to the scrap heap for a long time as long as we're paying the money to buy the games and they keep making, they are going to get a lot of money in their pockets. Taking all that money away will not make them happy bunnies. Besides, Pokemon is one of those games where you could have loads of plots around the little critters as long as you sit down and give it a think through, also those who are making it there, there will always be some staff member who can give additional ideas of what to add into the game or a plot for it. The creativity for Pokemon is never ending. And if they do run down on idea for the main games, they have side games they can make a profit on too until they get some inspiration for the main games. So really, it's win win for them all the way.

Personally, I'm not fond of the side games, or the fact of the amount of Pokemon they are increasing to, but nobody wins. But I would like to see for a finale the Pokemon we have by the end all in one game with a different plot line, new characters and that all rolled up into a large finish for Pokemon. Not that I want Pokemon to end, but if it did, this is what I'd like to see.

They'll keep making new Pokemon. A lot of the Pokemon might not look like Pokemon to the old fans and stuff (like the knight thing? That's this thing starting already), but they'll still have the Pokemon tag and, honestly, who cares? :D
Everything ends,
and that's always sad.
But everything begins again, too,
and that's always happy.

It's just tough hard for me to discuss in this matter. As it totally depends on Nintendo. If he have some great idea's looking better to him then he must like to make another Pokemon.

I think its not gonna be easy for Nintendo just giving up on Pokemon in this Gen. Pokemon is pretty....Uhh...No, Pokemon is very Popular. When it turned out to be popular or famous, Its just stupid for stop working on it or just giving the money away. But the current state really is a concern though. Seeing some Pokemon on 5th gen look kinda weird. A really concerning situation. But I'm still on my opinion, Pokemon wouldn't stop sooner. Maybe they'll continue about 2 or 4 years ahead. Thats what I'm guessing.

A brawler would be the best thing to happen to Pokemon. With less tedious, more exciting, and more skill-centered matches, I'd play the games for the first time since Pearl. :D
