I'm no expert on supernatural occurrences, but I do like to believe in that kind of stuff, if for no other reason than to make life more unpredictable/fantastic.

I actually do have reason to believe that my mom has some kind of connection to some sort of spirit realm. Both of my grandfathers have appeared in her dreams on several occasions to offer wisdom and general parenting advice. This is particularly creepy because my paternal grandfather dies five years before my parents even met, yet my mom's description of the mysterious old man in her dreams matched up according to my dad's description of his dad. :O
That's freaky, because Ive had the same experience. When I was very young, I had a dream where I conversed with my dead Great Grandfather, who died 8 years before I was born. And it was before I actully knew who he was, only later did I find that out. And when I told his wife, my great grandma, she was literally shocked and freaked out. :0

I like reading up on cryptids and cryptozoology from time to time.

I don't think it'd all count as occult/supernatural/paranormal. The root of it is just the idea that we haven't discovered yet. It's possible. Happens once and a while. Something minor. Subspecies and what not. Or what's in the depths of the ocean.

The urban legend aspect is sorta an aside.

~Ahem~ xD

Well, the story gets its start from the old W.W.II lab/arms factory in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Mothman was originally thought of as a weird mutation from the exposure to nuclear waste, other biological hazards, etc.

So then people in Point Pleasant began to see the Mothman, and every report mentioned the same thing- piercing red eyes and a vaguely humanoid body. It was all over the city, and it always seemed to be sighted before accidents of some sort.

Then everything came to a head in 1967 when Mothman was supposedly seen, in broad daylight, just as the Silver Bridge collapsed, killing 46 people or so.

Now the sightings these days aren't as abundant, but Point Pleasant still gets hit with them every year. And Mothman is ingrained in the local culture now.

another creepy tidbit is that apparently Mothman was seen on 9/11 too, just before the attack.
I think the similarities between the Mothman and the Flatswoods Monster are interesting. The idea flying "large owl" like creatures with red glowing face/eyes goes back through many cultures and histories.

I actually read that the Mothman legend has some Native American influence as well, like you said im sure many tribes, and even cultures in Asia, Europe and Africa, have stories of the 'Red eyed monster' as well.

But that raises an interesting question. It's a universal myth, in that several cultures across the globe, with no contact between them, all believe in the same myth. But where did it get its start, then? Maybe there is some factual evidence behind all the mystery.

It's kinda been said already, but I agree with the above post. If Myths/Legends have common origins, that bridge cultural differences, then it would be foolish to overlook them or to simply dismiss them as untrue. It's statistically more likely to be true if isolated, unrelated groups believe in them. Although the actual degree can vary, behind every myth is a fact.

That would provide some credence to the argument for the truth behind some Myths and legends. The Medieval English, the ancient Chinese, and the Mayans all had Dragon myths. And they never had contact between themselves, yet they all have a common legend that is central to their belief systems. Hmmm....

I believe that we all have a connection to some sort of spiritual realm. It may sound crazy but I myself maintain a link close to that. I am Japanese, a mix between Shinto and Buddhist yet I am also quite Spiritualistic. Every so often, when feeling streesed, I meditate, quite a soothing meditation that my Grandfather taught me (he's Shinto) and it was interesting as the last time I meditated I fell quite deep and could hear and feel, more of sense the presence of others, and all my flatmates were out too. It spooked me quite a bit but I have had episodes in the past like this, and not only just when meditating.

So heres my theory, I believe that as children we have some sort of connection with some sort of spirit realm, as we get older we lose it but there are people who stay open to it and those that keep it open (like myself). anybody agree?

I'll start with Vampires just for something different.
The first of their kind, Count Dracula was created by Bram Stoker, correct?
Where do you think he got the idea from? He used a particularly blood-thirsty prince, Vlad Dracula (more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler) as his inspiration.
True vampires the way we have been brought up to know them as? Who knows for sure. I've heard stories that have come out of the far eastern parts of Europe (as is to be expected ;]) that they exist. Until I see proof in front of me, idk.

Spirits, ghosts, demons and the like, obviously anyone who is of any sort of spiritual background must believe these exist. Possession is highly likely to be believed in religious circles, how could it not, to believe in God, heaven and the angels then one must also believe in Satan, hell and demons.
Spirits and ghosts, very similar entities. I think that people need to start believing what they see with their own eyes and stop just putting things they cannot explain down to "oh, it must of just been my imagination".

One thing that has not really been touched on as such is premonitions.
My girlfriend and I were actually talking about this the other night. Our situation is that of a long distance relationship, for the time being.
I was telling her stories of the times I have had what seems like deja vu while talking to her on the phone.
A theory we have come up with is this;
It is said that humans use a ridiculously specific 10% of their brainpower. How they measured this I would love to know, but that would be a discussion for another time.
Now apart from the regular masses that only use this 10%, there are those all over the world that can manage to use more.
What our theory is, is that I personally, can use a higher percentage of my brainpower, while sleeping and that in my subconscious, time is of no relevance and the past, present and future has all already happened and that the concept of time is just the conscious way of categorizing all the different events that I live in my sleep.
All that is left for me to do is to work out how to tap into that higher brainpower while conscious.
I think with a little bit of study and research, and a little determination it might be possible.
After all, it is said that the human mind has infinite possibilities.

Just quickly before I finish this off and go to bed.
There have been alot of cases of Stigmata from all over the world over the years. Something else to throw into the conversation.

I'll go looking for examples and other various research notes tomorrow when I'm alot more awake.
I can feel your fever, taking over me.

YES.^ Great examples there.

My grandmother ( The one I mentioned earlier) had several strange premonitions/examples of Deja Vu in the years leading up to her death in '00. Very freaky.

That's actually a pretty mainstream idea, that as children we still have strange intangibles and abilities, but for most people they fade as we get older, but as we get closer to dying, they come back a bit.

And that technique I've heard of before, except I've heard of it's practiced by Hindu Yogis, but the altered mind state as a result of it is the same. Very interesting. :)

I think that the untapped power of the brain may help us to understand several of the supposed supernatural abilitites- like premonitions, the stigmata etc. The stigmata occur because somehow the person can literally physically manifest the marks, through thier strong beliefs/will power. Remember the old 'mind over matter' saying? maybe there is some reality behind that saying after all.

I don't believe in anything like that.

I only believe in God and angles.

Like i said, to believe in god and the angels you must also believe in satan and the demons.
You cant have one without the other. You have to have malevolence to baance the benevolence. Light and dark and so on.

I think you might be right, a higher state of consciousness might be the key to unocking some of those mysteries. Im hoping ill eventually work it out. Im determined.
I can feel your fever, taking over me.

I commend you, that was very well put.

I have no doubt there's a way to get there, the problem is actually training your mind to be able to do those amazing feats. it would take a lot of training to do. But keep trying, because i love that kind of stuff.

Finally! Something I'm not on the fence on!

I am a full-fledged believe now. I have been since I was 8. Until then I just wasn't sure. I'll start off my story time with the occurrence that turned me.

One Night back in '01, January '01 to be exact, My uncle wanted my dad to go with him for a night on the town. Now that wouldn't be so bad if you don't bring into consideration that where I lived at the time was 30 minutes away from "the town". My dad had just gotten a new movie... The Sixth Day. I was playing my gameboy in the same room. My dad was about to accept the offer when I heard a strange voice whisper "you don't want to go..." After a nice little chill session in my corner, I repeated it... and my dad said "You're right. I'm going to stay home and watch my movie."
The next morning it was discovered that my uncle had died in a crash.... It involved a semi... and the cab of my uncle's truck being crushed. Whatever that voice was.... it helped me inadvertently save my dad's life. He would have ended up as drunk as my uncle had been... And since they'd be too broke for any other option, they would have had to drive home anyway. If I had stayed quiet, like I normally did in these situations, I probably would be without a father today... and that's a thought I don't like thinking about.

And a more recent one. Happened about 6 months ago.

Where I used to live was what was left of an old town. it had its own schoolhouse and everything. That schoolhouse was on my friend's property. And it, of course, had a pretty well known rep of being haunted. One night I was staying over there.... We were bing lame and camping out in the front yard.... (mostly because it was chili night there and neither of us wanted to be around for the repercussions since we didn't eat any.) I had finally fallen into something like sleep... It seemed like sleep but it also didn't. All I know is one moment I'm falling asleep in the tent and the next my friend is screaming at me to get a hold of myself. I was 3/4 of the way to the schoolhouse and according to her I was mumbling in some other language she couldn't identify... and I looked wide awake.

Either way... there's no doubt in my mind. After what happened in those two stories I would be stupid not to believe.

OHH I have a story!!!
I don't really know if mine is paranormal but its fun to tell people about anyway

Ok one day at work my phone rang and I answered it, it was some old guy and he asked if Neal (my boss) was available. I told him my boss wasn't there and asked him if I could take a message. He then said he was Neal's dad. so I took a message and emailed it to my boss.

My boss then came over to my desk later in the day and told me his dad was dead. I asked if it was his father in law or something and he said he was dead too. So that was odd but I brushed it off.

Then a few months later I had a call from a lady on my work phone. I answered it and she asked to talk to Hilary (a lady in my team) I told her Hilary was not in but I could take a message. She said she was hilary's daughter.
So I took a message and passed it onto hilary.

the next day hilary got the message and came to my desk and said she didn't have a daughter. I then said that's weird, coz we have no other hilary's at work. She then told me she had miscarriage of a baby girl when she was younger.

I thought this was quite creepy. I never found out who these people really were, or maybe I am a ghost message bank ;) who knows, but I found it scary and kinda cool

Those are always the creepiest stories. 0: The only problem with those is that you'd have to discern the coincidence(s) from the actual supernatural.

My latest occurrence. (note this is a two days old occurrence.)

I had decided to turn in early the other night and ended up dreaming. In my dream I met a little girl on a beach, she was telling me to "look out for the little boy", she did so several times. In my dream I looked around but could not see a little boy and pulled out my Nintendo DS to play. On it I was surfing on the ocean and there was a little Tuber Boy on the game, two tiles away from me.

I woke up, noting the dream in my dream diary and went to University. I came home and one of the articles on the first page was that during the day (around lunchtime), a little boy had drowned at a beach, a little way from the city I live. The picture on the front page was of the family, with two inserts of their children. One was the boy who had drowned that day, the same looking boy on my DS in my dream and the other was of their daughter who also died drowning, she died several years ago, and was the same little girl that was talking to me in my dream.

I was super freaked by this, my flat mates thought I was falling ill and my hands were shaking (I was still holding the newspaper).

My first girlfriend was killed just after our fourth anniversary, and she haunts me. I woke up one night and there was this bright gray orb floating over my bedroom door, so I called my supernaturalist friend Ariel and asked her what it was. She came over, saw it, said it was some chick named Hailey (I try not to talk about her, so Ariel had no idea that was her name), and left. That was in April, and I still see the orb almost every day. She hangs out above my bookcase on a blanket I put up there for her, but every now and then she follows me around. It's gotten rather comforting.

That's certainly scary, at least in the beginning. :0 I do wish a deceased relative would watch over me, it would be kind of comforting to know that they still care about you. :C
