A lot of the homeless around here are well known by the kids in the area. I forget their names, but the kids gave them nicknames and go hang out with them all the time, even though they're old guys that used to be in a mental hospital.

Hobos are my favorite type of people!!
We hang out and even share leftovers... and cardboard boxes...

No! Am not making fun of them! If i were, i'd be making fun of myself... bummer ;___;

I've been told that many of the homeless 'chose that fate for themselves' if you will, they enjoy being nomads, going where they want and doing what they will, no ties to anything. I won't claim that every one of them is like this, but I get the impression that they aren't always so worse-off as we're generally led to think. I know personally that if I were truly homeless and destitute, I'd be quite the thief, yet I've never heard of a hobo breaking into a bakery or anything; they just don't seem very... desperate, you know?

I don't live in a big city though; I seldom encounter these folk, so have nothing to say from first-hand experience.
Would be nice to see some 'homeless demographics' statisitics though — to see if anything I've said holds true for any sigificant amount of the majority.

It depends.. I usually feel pity for those who clearly show a disability, and help them out with a bit of change.. but for those who don't.. I honestly couldn't be bothered because I believe THEY can't be bothered to do anything about their situation.

Some of the homeless are indeed there by choice, some less so than others. Some were forced to be homeless, but found the nomadic life to be pleasurable. All in all I don't feel sorrow for them, just the ones who truly wish to improve their situation.

In either case, it hurts when I see homeless people. I get confused on whether to help them or ignore them. If I ignore them, how can I go home not feeling guilty? Some homeless are in desperate situations but others are simply too lazy to work. It's a no win-situation really. I take a deep breath. And move on. Lost in a sea of faces hoping that maybe someday I can do more to help people around me then just to smile and nod as I walk by.
Too often we... enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

I'm mixed about the homeless. I feel really bad for the people who were forced out of their homes and have nowhere to go and those people who have children and are homeless. Victims of the crappy economy.

However, you got the ones who are homeless but don't want to improve themselves and do anything to get drugs and crap. I just walk away from those people.
