I'm sure you have all seen threads such as 'Rate the signature of the person above you' or even in general 'Rate the THEME of the person above you' in Other Trivia.

Those who partake in the threads give a rating on a scale from 1/10 depending on how much they like the theme above.

Whether you are an active contributor to those threads or just happen to be passing by other places noticing other peoples' avatars and signatures, what do you look for in their themes in order for them to appeal to you?

Do you look for attractive CSS? Maybe just tidiness and co-ordination? Do you nitpick the little things in somebody's signature or avatar?

Or do you perhaps look at a theme for its visual quality? Things like colours, textures and even images could perhaps appeal so much to you that it doesn't matter how they laid out their signature.

You can call me that kind of person, I love viewing visual content and more than anything I become rather taken in by anybody who uses an image that has attractive colours and/or settings in their theme. More often than not, when I post in the signature or theme rating threads, I often give high scores to people who don't often get high scores from others, usually because they're nitpicking aspects of their signatures or themes they don't like, whereas I rate them depending on how much I like the visual appeal that they have. Needless to say, if I don't see that visual appeal in a theme that I am rating, I'd give a low score anyway and a critique.

If someone has a tag, I will consider the following(and more):

does it flow well?
is the focal made out?
are the effects meaningful?

Yeah, I judge them on a lot more, but those are really the main ones.

As for like CSS and junk:

Is working properly?

Does it flow well?

Yeah, more stuff, but those are the most important. For CSS and stuff, I prefer simplicity, I don't really know why, but I try not to judge it based off of that.

Basically anything that appeals to me usually gets a 8 or higher rating. What appeals to me is the colours, the way it's set out, and of course how the imagery is being used.

Although even if you just have text in your signature, if it's presented in a way that's appealing, I usually give it a high rating.

I don't tend to rate people with criticism on their graphics if they're using a tag made by someone else, because of course, it's not of their own work and it's a signature thread, not a graphics rating thread. ;P

I'm not the type of person who likes comments like "Nice and simple, good job. 8/10" or "You did very well, nice organization. 9/10" when giving criticism and ratings. I like a more explanatory and explicate criticism. Sure it doesn't have to be a whole form paragraph, but more detailed words other than the usual "Very nice, well done. :)" which is answers given out most of the time.

I look for how it all works together (To see if the colors clashing together matches well, text fits, the main vocal point is what sticks out the most, etc.) and the style of the person's taste in themes. Organization is something I like signatures to have, especially since a theme usually includes some input in the person's personality. These are some particulars I look into when rating a signature, and giving my criticism.

I think about
  • Color scheme - What colors are there, and if they match, appeal to me, or clash.
  • Organization - How things are set up; whether or not it looks as if things are all over the place. I like organized signatures.
  • Stuff - The amount of different things that are in the sig/avvie. Userbars, banners, icons, links, text, etc. I really don't like sigs or avvies that look to busy.
  • Content - I look for a general theme to the whole thing. I like things to match, and stay more or less on the same topic. I think that people's themes should say something about them.

Well, I look at the picture quality(can it be adjusted?), the length and width(if it's a few pixels over), and the wording. I hate hate hate egg signatures or copy n' pasta's, because they feel cheap and cheesy to me. I have more respect for the guy with the Charizard Avatar/Signature than the guy with the egg signature, even if it is "good".

Picture quality, overall layout, and how well the colors match each other.
