Well I bought another as-rock n68s and I decided to put an athlon on it this time. Ok so after the install and the bios update everything went smoothly, I decided to do an overclock to my target 2.5ghz and well.

1st clock speed stock @2.00ghz it booted
2nd clock speed oc @2.2ghz it booted
3rd clock speed oc @2.3ghz it booted
4th clock speed @2.4ghz here is the prob.

I overclocked the processor 400mhz and it did not want to boot. I have no idea what its wrong. So im asking any1 with a bit more overclocking experience in athlons or overclocking experience in general what do I do or what is wrong?? I have to more computers with the same motherboard and they have gone over the 1 ghz overclock so why not the athlon. Help pls and thx in advanced. Oh and the model of the athlon is an 3600+. And the reason i got this athlon instead of its higher counterparts was because i was trying to build a really tight budget computer for my mom and it was only 25$ so i got it.

oh well i guess you maybe right but i still dont get why this procesor is the one giving me problems since my other 2 computers are overclocked 800mhz and to 1000mhz i still dont get it the 1 is a quad phenom and and the other a 6 core phenom and the 3 of em have the same motherboard. its not right but i guess ill leave it at 2.3ghz. oh and thx twocows.

There's too many things to take into account. Are you playing with voltage? Also, what do you mean by clocking it to 1000Mhz? Because the HT Ref clock starts at 200 and that's the only thing that will affect clock speed on an Athlon. I'm more than happy to give you a hand, but you need to give me more info as well.

Also, if you're trying to up the HT reference without dropping the RAM multis, the cheap RAM is probably conking out on you.

Lastly, does your mum really need an overclocked rig?

lol no i dnt think she needs it but i need to try to overclock it, its pure interest of me i just want too since i couldnt afford a 5000+. I think the cheap ram is conking out on me. Yes im playing with voltage. I mean that the to phenoms can be overclocked to the 1000mhz over stock and still boot it boots farther than that but i burned a psu by doing it so im holding back at 4.4ghz, i know i cant compare phenoms to an athlon but its wierd that the phenoms in the same motherboard go higher.

Mate, I don't want to know WHAT sort of voltage you're pumping through that Phenom to get it to hit 4.4GHz. The 965s need like, 1.5V to get 4.2GHz stable, so I surely wouldn't be pushing that much through it on an old board. Hell, I wouldn't be putting that much voltage through without SERIOUS water cooling or LN2.

Drop the RAM multis, so you can run it at or below rated speeds, while still upping the HT ref. Either way, don't expect to get too much on the CPU without being able to change the CPU multi. Also, the Northbridge seems to like a tiny touch more voltage when the CPU is clocked up.

Just out of interest, are you calling a bootup stable? Because I don't call anything that doesn't pass 3 hrs of Prime95 stable. You shouldn't need much more than that unless you have tonnes of ram to hold the iterations.

yeah it work it needed more ram and i did what you said and got it up to 2.7 max booting WOOT!! thx man. Also they are both watercooled and they are both very stable actually i cant recall the last time she crashed lol. I have a friend that can get me liquid nitrogen in a big ammount hehehehe and ive tried getting my phenom up to almost 6.6ghz lol it worked hahahhaha but i couldnt use it while pumping liquid nitrogen on it hahahaha. Well thx again for the help i left it at 2.5 ghz which was my mark and its perfect there. You are really a genius i never though about dropping the ram multis, also i didnt think it was the ram at first but you helped me confirm it, oh well i went 35$ over budget but it work yay

total build cost: 167$ with 38 cents.9

ps: Im pushing 1.55 volts on the phenom to get it to 4.4ghz.
