Operating systems are vital to a computer's daily operations. However, there are many different kinds of operating systems and many different users prefer different operating systems. Which operating system is your favorite, and why?

My personal favorite would have to be Mac OS X. I love the sleek design of the OS, Spotlight, and I generally just find it easier to use than Windows. I'm not saying Windows is difficult, not at all. I just like having the Dock at my side. I have yet to try a Linux distribution but I may build my own computer and run Ubuntu.

As for Windows, I would have to say that Windows 7 is my favorite. It's stable, secure, and added some great new features. I liked XP, but really... it's 9 years old now and I think it's time to move forward.

Windows Vista because it's comatible with all games :) It also isn't complicated like Macs, which, in my opinion, are kind of useless to me since they don't have MS programs so I don't know why I would need to work with those types of computers. Office work and compatibility is to Windows Vista :D

I had just the opposite experience with Vista. I found it to be incompatible with most of my programs and had tons of stability issues. I went back to XP in a very short time.

Just curious, but have you tried Windows 7 yet?

That's awkward. Vista is known for the reasons I gave. Well, I don't know what you tried on it, but it's weird :P

Yes I have, but there are some games that aren't compatible with it yet, and I'm so used to Vista already.

Well those were the early days of Vista. I will admit that with the updates, it did get better, but still not enough to convince me to install it again. Even when I did for school, it would still crash every now and then.

Vista, which is now in Service Pack 2, is now very stable. And it will work with most games, depending on the decade your games are from. If they're from the '90s, all bets of it working are off, simply because they would've been at least 6 years old when Vista hit the market.

However, 7 is surprisingly stable for not having a service pack released yet.

apple products are known for being, i think, overly simple. every time someone tells me that macs are too complicated it turns out they're just not used to the interface, which certainly doesn't make it a complicated system. for me, the transition from Vista to Leopard was an easy adjustment. and you can purchase microsoft office for mac, along with plenty of third-party applications that allow you to do just about as much with it as you can with windows. (and for the windows-only apps you have to have, not only does snow leopard come with an HD partitioning application, but there are windows emulators you can purchase.)

i don't think there's really a better or worse OS, some systems suit certain people better than others. i just prefer mac for the pleasant/customizable interface and ease of use + a few, not necessarily a fan of the apple company though :b

I was running Service Pack 2, and it actually still gave me slight problems. It seemed to randomly crash when running Firefox, even after several clean installs. I had all of my drivers up-to-date and everything.

Agreed completely. Every OS has different features for different people. There is no 'best' operating system. It's all about what you need and prefer.

It really comes down to personal preference..I have been using Windows for more than 8 years now, currently have a Windows 7 desktop and a Macbook Pro, and I like them both. I use my "monster" desktop for gaming, programming, and art purposes, and the Mac for other things, such as school work and the like.

And I also got the SP2 of Windows Vista and it's on another laptop, but it's not giving me problems whatsoever.

What do you mean by that? Was the whole OS crashing, or just Firefox? 'Cause a large history will cause Firefox itself to lock up and crash if you've got a weaker machine (and even on some more powerful machines). If it was the OS, you may have hardware that your computer doesn't support (some OEM machines have the small PCIe slots, but are not actually set up to actually use anything through them, as they will blue screen on you if you have anything in those slots).

Anyways, back on topic, my favorite OS to this point is Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate, for a multitude of reasons, including the windows that snap into place, and it being considerably easier to navigate than XP was.

If Vista was crashing, I highly doubt that it was entirely the OS's fault, either.

Also, what's the point of 7 Pro/Ultimate? I mean, are you joining a domain or encrypting your data with Bitlocker? Not to mention that "XP Mode" is a waste of time when you have access to Virtualbox and the like.

I agree with Chadie, though. I use my Windows 7 Desktop for gaming and heavy use, but my Macbook Pro for general internet/work use.

I'm not sure where either would stand if Windows didn't have the benefit of games, though. There's no denying that it's better for that purpose than OSX is. I think I would still stick to Windows, partially because I have much better control over the hardware that goes into the desktop, that way.

Again, it is preference. I can happily use Windows, OSX or Linux (providing I have a decent WM) - each just lend themselves better to certain situations.

It was the entire OS. It never crashed when I was doing anything else, whether that was playing a game, working in Office, or using Internet Explorer. It only crashed when Firefox was running. I've since updated the same computer to 7 and haven't had a problem.

I mostly use Windows 7 for school and gaming. For everything else I'll use OS X. I really, really would like to give Linux a shot, too.

I was highly turned off of Home Premium for the sheer lack of being able to create user accounts to control what people access when logged in as a user on my computer. And sometimes, as I student, I may fiddle around with joining a domain, albeit that'd probably be a rare occurrence.

XP Mode really isn't all that worth it, though you can have an entire virtual machine within it if you know what you're doing. Virtual Box is far easier to set up, though.

I've not bothered with Bitlocker.

And then there's a general familiarity with it from using it 20 hours a week at work since the end of November.

Nothing against Unix-based OSes, but I'll stick to Windows for more widespread compatibility reasons. Plus the fact that Open Office is lacking in features that I abuse in Office.

Yay, the good old OS debate thread has sprung up again! *cracks fingers*

For general use and some advanced use, I use OS X for everything. I have my major productivity suite in it, my entire music library, every app that I'll ever need and possibly more, a full music creation and editing suite (NOT Garageband, but Logic Pro), emulators for the DS, GBA, Classic Mac (in the Intel era, you need ems to run Classic stuff) and Windows, and virtualization suites for Ubuntu and Win 7. Most of my heavy work is done in here, obviously. Most small Windows programs and even some larger ones run fine in WINE, so I don't often need to start up VMware.

As you noticed, I also have Windows 7 installed on this machine in an alternate partition. I use that for the chat client for Victory Road forums (the client doesn't play nice under WINE and it's Windows-only... I'm helping Cat develop a Mac version, though) as well as video games. I'm not going to lie; 7 handles the same game infinitely better than OS X does (for example, Portal's audio in OS X cuts out and the graphics suck; Windows's version runs relatively well and works fine).

So... yeah. I use both of them.

Snow Leopard for me. (Mac OS X)

I have been with Windows for a long time and having used this Mac for over 2 months now, I can safely say that it is the better OS in my opinion. Even running Window's 7 on Parallels, is faster than most of the computers I have been on.

How ironic.

Of course, this is my opinion before Mac haters join in.

Yeah, I find myself booting into Windows to play most games. Especially online games, where you can't play at your own pace. Half Life 2 is fine on OSX, but the Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2 require over 60fps 100% of the time. I think it's still a CPU bottleneck, though. As the frames don't go up much if I turn down the graphics. 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo and Nvidia 320m.

Windows Vista, one of my friend (who work in Microsoft) said Vista sucks. It slow. I think they rush this product. Windows 7 good, but not as fast as Ubuntu. I have two of them installed on my laptop. Windows 7 compatible with programs that I like. (Adobes) Ubuntu, just start using it and feels great, except can't setup wireless network. I have 2Wire.

My current, and favorite, OS is Windows 7. It just seems to be more efficient to me because of the new versions of Microsoft Office.
You do realise that Office has nothing to do with the version of Windows, you're running, right? Office 2010 supports back to XP SP3, if I remember right. Hell, Macs can run Office. Speaking of which, Office 2011 for OSX is awesome - much better than the mess that was 2008.

I use Mac OS for most everything. I only ever use windows to watch Blu-rays and the occasional program that won't run on Mac or has an equivalent. (very rare)
