So supposed Apple has announced a new media event 'Back to the Mac' on October 20th according to engadget.

Woo. I am personally quite excited about this. It's nice to hear the words Mac and Apple in the same sentence after such a long time. iOS is great and everything, but I got into Apple for their computers and operating systems.

This image was supposed sent out with the announcement, this makes me quite hopeful to hear announcement or preview even of the next Mac OS X, seeing Apple's history of naming their Mac OS X systems after big cats.

Anyways, what do you guys think? Are you excited, and predictions on what Jobs has up his sleeves for this?

OSX Lion is going to have Aero and then all the fanboys/girls will claim that Windows copied the Mac.

But then again that just is my prediction, except the lion part. It will probably be named lion considering there's a lion in the image.

Is aero thing where you hover over the program in the taskbar on windows 7? I don't use w7 enough to know the terms off the top of my head.

That little window-preview thing is a part of Aero, yes.

Okay, I really only boot into windows to run AutoCAD and Guild Wars. So terminology escapes me.

Mac OSX has a similar effect already, but it more akin to what happens when you hover over the program for a prolonged time and it shows you that programs window.

Aero does that as well, actually, though it doesn't switch over to it and pull it forward unless you click it.

I predict one of two things.
The first is an 11" ULV Macbook. And although it seems rather early, it might be a good chance to update the OS. That said, we're only up to 10.6.4 now and previous versions have been known to reach 10.x.8 and higher.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say: if it's 10.7, I'm pumped. :D

Even if this does feel to early to 'release' 10.7. I have a hunch there's a high likelyhood of them 'previewing' 10.7. That fact of having the lion in the background just makes this feel so right. Unless Jobs is trolling us hard.

A ULV is a cool idea, and I could see that corresponding to a the low supply of MacBook Airs and the possibility of Apple announcing a new MacBook Air.

I'm quite psyched about this. As I posted on the MacWorld thread regarding it, I'm a fan of iOS and all, but after a few months of endless iOS this and iOS that, you kinda pine for OS X news. Like Silver, I got into Apple through their OS.

They're definitely going to show off 10.7 (and I can safely say it's going to be called Lion too). They said it in the invites to the press. I'm also guessing that they're going to release 10.6.5 on that day and probably announce updated versions of iLife, iWork, and their Pro tools. An updated MacBook Air would also make sense and maybe some other hardware revisions.

But yeah, I'm psyched for this.

10.7 would be 10x better if they named it Mufasa. They won't, but it would hilarious if they did. XD

Would they be doing the whole mac-only feed again? I'm clear enough of exams to be able to watch that. Also, is there any chance of a Lion beta being leaked down the track?

I also predict that 10.6.5, if it is to be released, will boost gaming performance.

I would certainly hope that they would have had time to tweak their stream settings so that the live video feed would be more compatible for everyone. The main reason they did a live video feed last time was to hopefully deter all the live bloggers and avoid the situation that happened in the iPhone 4 Keynote. That being said I think that it should work with any HTML5 capable browser this time around if they do choose to video stream.
There will most likely be a leak of the Lion Beta, however as it wouldn't be feature complete, most people don't bother. Usually what happens is the released betas are just slightly modded versions of the current software. (aka Snow Leo with added features for developers to put through its paces)
It's not until theres a steady stream of betas released in consecutive months, usually the 5 months prior to release of the GM, that anything is really noticeable.
10.6.5 should indeed help the gaming aspect of the mac platform, but it will also focus on making wireless printing (& airprint)easier and increase the compatibility of USB. I'm hoping that 10.6.5 will include some support for USB3 since those devices are available and some mac pro users are going to want to start using them. (also possibly new generations of their computers could come with USB3 ports since they are backwards compatible with USB2)

So... are they steaming this online, or not? Because I can't find anything hinting towards where to watch it...

as of now, I don't think they are going to stream it. I'll be tuning in to MRL and Ars for their live-blogs on the event. They'll post a QT video of it up around 6pm EST

It appears that Apple decided, last minute, to stream the event live. Unfortunately it appears that the viewing restrictions from before are still in place.
Apple will broadcast its October 20 event online using Apple's industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on October 20, 2010 at www.apple.com.

"is based on open standards"

"viewing requires a mac or iPod/iPhone"

...Apple I think you and I need to sit down and talk about the meaning of "open".

Haha, anyway, still no desire for a Mac but I'm interested to see what comes of this.

Based on open standards =/= open standards. Most major software developers steal freely from open source and make just enough modifications to it that they can claim it as their own and sell it.

well it was interesting to say the least. The iLife updates were as expected, neat. and the Lion preview was slightly disappointing. Whee everything is getting more multitouch. The Mission Control App is actually long overdue, should have been in snow leopard if you ask me, and the app store seems like an ok idea as long as it doesn't become the only way to get apps. (btw the UI on the mac app store is horrible)
The MacBook Air updates were also as expected and I was pleased t see a sub-13" notebook from apple again. I liked the 12" powerbook they had back in the day.

The biggest questions I have about Lion are:
1. What Computers are getting the cut this time around? (Snow Leopard cut out all PPC generation machines, so which Intel machines are getting dropped for Lion?)
2. What do you do if you use third party Mouses and Keyboards that don't support Multitouch? I really don't want to have to shell out an additional $70 for that magic trackpad to use the OS. (and everyone saw just how frustrating the magic mouse can be to use multitouch, so there's no way I'll buy one of those?
Out side of Lion the other question bugging me is, what happens to iChat/Adium/other IM programs when Facetime comes out?

I'm sure Apple will accommodate for that with keyboard shortcuts and whatnot. And even if you can't use regular mice for that sort of stuff by default, I'm sure someone out there come up with a software-based solution for it, along the lines of MagicPrefs/BetterTouchTool for the Magic Mouse.

I loved what little we saw from Lion, though. I already use a Magic Mouse with MagicPrefs, and I can't imagine going back to regular mice. So naturally I'm pretty excited to try out what Lion has to offer. Very exciting!

iLife and the MacBook Air were cool too, of course. Those iMovie trailers were pretty impressive, haha :D

Eh, I'm not too sure about what to think of Lion. From what I've heard and seen on Apple's website, Lion seems like they're trying to force some concepts that should stay on a mobile device and put them onto a desktop/laptop computer. An Applications folder works well enough for me in tandem with Spotlight; I don't need a springboard or "Launchpad" as they call it. Maybe I don't want some apps to be fullscreen; whatever happened to the concept of "multitasking?" Maybe we don't want a walled garden for our Mac apps or Apple raking in 30% of our earnings for the apps that we spent many hours working on and debugging. Maybe we just want our Macs to remain Macs, not some horrible conglomerate of iOS and OS X.

At the very least, give us alternatives. Let us turn off those new features in System Preferences. Let us customize our Macs with third-party alternatives that can replace the core functionality of these new iCandy addons (heh, get it? iCandy?). Give us theming options for OS X, and by this I mean full UI customizations (default font, icon sets, window design (oh wait they're moving to full screen nvm) and system sound replacements that don't require knowledge of the delicate inner workings of OS X to change).

However, Mission Control looks like a good idea. Nice to see they're remembering Spaces here.

Also, MULTITOUCH. I'm running my Snow Leopard on a 2008-era MacBook that doesn't have support for all of those fancy swiping, pinching and zooming functions. Why alienate those people who have computers that don't support multitouch? Last time I checked, many people don't have enough money to buy the latest and greatest hardware every time they release some superficial new feature that probably won't affect our workflow but will suddenly become a core feature of the OS (multitouch. I mean, two-finger scrolling on a MacBook (Air/Pro) is basically all it's good for. Unless you're actively zooming in or out/rotating an image in Preview, I don't see what the point is in it). My computer at the time of purchase cost upwards of $2000 and several months after I got it Apple put the new multitouch trackpads into the revised frame. I'm a student in high school. I can't afford to purchase a really expensive (albeit pretty) new computer every time they do a hardware revision.

Chances are I won't become a Windows convert anytime soon, but at the rate Apple's going with their desktop OSes, they might just make me one. iOS should NOT mix with OS X. That's my viewpoint.

If anyone honestly thinks Lion is just a reskinned iOS, they're dead wrong.

Firstly, multitouch. I know a lot of people are getting up in arms about 10.7 putting more emphasis on this, but stop and think for a minute. Apple is clearly trying to take the best elements of the iOS experience and adapt them to a desktop environment, but do you honestly think they don't know the difference between a tablet and a desktop PC? That desktops use keyboards and mice instead of being entirely touch based?

You will be able to continue using different mice with Macs in the future. And just like with previous iterations of OS X, you will be able to use clicks and keyboard shortcuts to achieve the same functions that you would with Apple's own multitouch hardware. If not, they really are shooting themselves in the foot here.

Next, fullscreen. I know tons of people who have refused to shut up about how Macs can't currently maximize windows like Windows can. Now, we get true full screen, and people are still crying over it! Why? And how does this suddenly mean no multitasking? The Mac they demoed that on had several different applications open at the time--no need to worry there.

App Store. Jobs specifically mentioned during the keynote that this wouldn't be the only place to get apps for your Mac, so the idea of the Mac also becoming a walled garden is completely unfounded. Use it if you want, ignore it if you don't.

Launchpad. Everyone uses their computers differently. I'm sure some people out there will find this to be useful. I like how I've got my dock set up, so I'll probably stick with that. Just because it doesn't apply to me doesn't mean others won't find it useful. Either way, it's hardly anything to complain about.

As far as I can tell none of this stuff will get in the way of the current Mac experience. I was honestly scared before watching the keynote that Lion would just be a straight rip of iOS made for desktops, but now I can safely say it's looking great so far.

So that's my two cents. And I apologize in advance if any of this came off sounding too harsh.
