Here's a truth that you've never stopped to think about:
Most people around you are, in fact, aliens.

What do you take from this statement, and how do you interpret or understand it? Do you disagree with the statement? Do you believe, instead, that others around you are more like cattle? Or are you an Alien? Why might you be an Alien?
Then what is your personal definition of "Alien?"
(I don't mean the "Little Green men from Outer Space" so please avoid discussion on that. If you do want to talk about Extra-Terrestrials, then please use the thread here: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=234483 )

Discuss!

Maybe you're taking it way too literal;
Alien doesn't have to mean the "Little green men from outer space"
The definition of Alien, at least to me, is "Unfamiliar, unknown, foreign, different, or unlike oneself."

I kind of see what Spacial is getting at.. and it sounds extremely interesting.. Are you taking it jokingly like as if the definition would be taken more seriously in "old world terms" ?

I guess, Tenshi, you see the definition very literally and don't see it in a more broad sense, which is completely fine. I just think it's very interesting :33

Then one acting different than the others is considered an alien?
Sounds like a.. 'nice way' to insult someone to me.
Well, that might be because that's the "most read" definition and is as well the most well known one. It's up to each one how they define it.

No, from the sounds of things you're the one taking the meaning too literally. Connotations and denotations and all that.
I could be, actually. I'd have to elaborate more to really state how I feel but I was wondering what other perspectives were.

If you think I'm being too literal, then how do you take it?

Kanade: I never saw it as an insult, actually.. so that's a pretty cool perspective. But like I said.. if that's how you consider the word, then that's cool.
I know some people who define the word "Ultimate" as "last" or "final", and others define it as being "best".. so it's just how you take it.
I was just interested in what you and others on here had to say about it.

I was sort of joking around, sort of being serious. Aliens tend to be foreign things that we're not familiar with. The idea of space aliens has always fascinated me and horrified me at the same time. There's a high possibility that they are more intelligent then us, and if they are then they may not be friendly as well.

If space aliens /were/ to come to earth, our planet would likely be overslaved or have to negotiate with them.

tldr aliens are srs bznz if they're real.

edit: if you go by kanade's def. then i'm by far an alien. :v

It's not how I consider the word.. it's how it's most common meaning is. My only way of English interactions are the internet and that's it, your definition of an alien, I can see being used, like *someone does xyz" "Lol man, what are you, an alien?" etc. I'm quite sure ultimate isn't very known as last, too. Actually, I learned another way to know how ultimate is, thank you.
..we are now able to procced to the final stage of our ultimate goal
I'm pretty sure it's not how you see the word, it's how it was shown to you. Aliens could be easily read as green humanoids, however, it can still be described as how you think it is. That pretty much could apply to any word with several meanings.

Most people around you are, in fact, aliens.
at a first glance i think of this statement in a bit of a superficial way, that people of different cultures and areas see me as unfamiliar while i see those people as unfamiliar. this can go a little deeper, replacing "cultures" and "areas" with "lifestyles" and "preferences." i also acknowledge we have a limited understanding of each other- we can't always fully grasp the choices and intentions of a person because we have so little to base our judgments on. so the way i see it, we're naturally alien to one another but we can gradually ascertain a degree of familiarity if we allow ourselves to trust each other.

Regarding the if you're an alien question.. that's a good one. And it's not something that can be answered easily, as you and I see alien as a different thing.

My definition: I bleed, you can kill me!

Your definition: I'm quite stranded, I prefer being alone near the computer. I don't behave.. "normal" and I don't follow trends unless I see something in them. Do you consider me alienistic enough?

It could be.. but then again.. what do you deem as "normal?" If everyone else preferred being alone near a computer, then that would be the norm, wouldn't it? Would you cease to be alien?

There are plenty of people who don't like being in public, and rather be with themselves. If those people were grouped together, they're no longer aliens, right? Because they have a mutual understanding for everyones wants and needs.

So then does that mean.. even if people look radically different, and let's say.. a man with green coloured skin appeared.. yet acted exactly how you act in the world.. would they then still be "alien"? Would this be the same case as homosexuals, blacks, orientals, or even WOMEN?

It's hard to say.. do you have any thoughts on this?

Remember your own definition.
I never said I was an alien, though. I said by your definition.

No.. I honestly don't care about someone's skin color. Though words don't equal the action, so I'm not sure how I'll react, but generally somebody's skin doesn't really matter to me.

Women are indeed strange.. JUST HEAD TO BED ALREADY DAMNIT. After that she cries I drugged her twice.

The way you're using the word alien is less of a thing and more of a description of something.

"It is alien to me."

It can also be a derogatory and politically incorrect term for a foreigner. I certainly wouldn't use it, outside of possibly humor.

The true noun definition as to what makes something an alien, is that it has to be a form of life that originated on a separate terrestrial body than one's self. What happens if you're born in space, I have no idea.

To me the word "alien' can mean so many different things like

Aliens from outer space.
People who are different to you.
An insult towards people from other countries
OR the title of this thread made me think of leaving people out, ignoring someone etc. Alienating them from everyone else.

I'm pretty sure I'm an alien (By that I mean I'm different). I mean I don't really like to say things about myself to others and I'm not one to talk first to people I don't know. I have a small group of close friends that I talk to, but I don't really talk to anyone else besides that. People usually call me "anti-social" which I completely agree with.
