If it's an HD source and you're watching it on a device that doesn't have 720 or 1080 vertical resolution, you can downscale it to standard definition without noticing much of a difference. That will significantly reduce the file size. You can use ffmpeg or mencoder or some frontend for it to do this. You could also try StaxRip or Handbrake.

All right, sometimes, I reconvert a file. I make it has a fair resolution not bigger than my PC screen (so it's 640x480, usually, for 4:3) avi format, with the same video/audio bitrate.

It's also xvid.

I wish people would stop using horrible, outdated codecs. ASP pales in comparison to H.264, which gives better quality and smaller sizes. VideoLan's x264 encoder is extremely good at what it does.

As for AVI, it doesn't even have B-frame support.

I'm sorry, it's what my MP4 uses! And it's one of the only few formats compatible with my DVD player. [/annoyed]

Yeah, I heard about H.264, but I never use it. I don't see the real point. And my PC is about... 5, 6 years old now? And still powerful by today's standards.

The "point" is that H.264 yields far better quality video and produces smaller filesizes. It's better than ASP in every way.
