Wow, top story. Everyone should make sure they read the entire thing, it's actually pretty awesome news. Shame it can't happen sooner.

There are a number of downsides though, such as efficiency and size of production, and I'm sure the cost might be an issue as well, but even so, it's a fantastic development.

Blood drives are going to lose out though :P (though is that really a bad thing?)

I don't think there's anything wrong with having multiple blood sources. Especially since this process was just born and developing and maturing it is going to take 5 years or so. Maybe less.

Anyways, this is a pretty cool development. It can be a last resort if the patient blood type isn't available. If blood drives do die out the worst thing that could happen is less chances of school recognition for students.

Oh of course. However, think about the implications of this - if your average person hears that blood can be made from skin cells, will they think that their will any longer be a sense of urgency over blood supplies? Wouldn't this decrease their motivation to donate blood because hey, "doctors can just make it from my arm!"

I actually hope that eventually, blood donations won't even be necessary.

Well this will make all the Trypanophobics like me happy now, I won't feel bad about not giving blood anymore. XD

This is truly remarkable, and I hope the trails go smoothly, and eventually this becomes a widespread medical practice. Also, If this is possible, then imagine the possibilities of other life-changing procedures that could be on the way also.

Yeah, I was super surprised when I read this on the news because they discovered it at a University that's only 15 minutes away from mine (that my cousin goes to) haha..

I'm a blood donor... so does this mean no more long and stupid questionnaires, no more gay people crying, and no more stabbing needles inside my arm?
blessed mother. 😈

I think it's awesome.

May be a little ways away, but I still hope that it actually comes to fruition. The money is in having you keep being sick, not actually curing the problem.

You've got to love that Canadian science. :D

On a serious note though, this is a fantastic discovery and will hopefully get more blood where it's needed than the current system.
