What are your opinions on third games? (Like Yellow, crystal, emerald and platinum)

I don't really like them much, I just wish they could add all the features into the first two games instead of masking us spend more money just for a few little tweaks of storylines etc...
There was nothing. Followed by everything. Swirling, burning specks of creation that circled life-giving suns. And then we reached to the light.

All the third games except Crystal were infinitely better than the first two in my opinion.

Yellow had improved graphics and Emerald was 100x better because of the smaller text. :]

Platinum was just awesomesauce (mainly b/c better pokeradar). =)

Crystal didn't have Mareep :x

Third games are my favorite. And it's not always a matter of adding all those "third game" features in the first two. The problems with the first two have to be identified first, such as post-game in RS being too short, Amity Park in DP not allowing enough Pokemon, etc. And it cleans up glitches that ended up in the first two games usually. So it's not a matter of robbing you (well, it's not the main reason at least), it's more of a matter of cleaning up the problems with the originals.

I may or may like them depending on how they're executed.

Didn't care for Yellow since it stuck me with my least favorite Pokemon

I have to give props to Crystal because it introduced playing as a female trainer. Still want my Mareep, though.

Emerald was a mixed bag. The text looked better and the Frontier was an interesting addition, but trying to mix the Magma and Aqua plots together made for a bit of a mess and the restyled character outfits didn't sit well with me.

Platinum is my favorite Pokemon game to date. The storyline enhancements were done right, the slow Surfing problem was addressed and it's the best game for rematching trainers, featuring both the Vs. Seeker and the ability to rematch Gym Leaders where other games have had either one or the other.

How could I forget the slow surfing? x)

Since all third games are usually pretty decent, maybe I should just wait for the BW remake.

Well to sum it up: I love love love Emerald. Platinum is pretty good too, but overall I prefer Pearl. Crystal << Silver, Blue/Red <<< Yellow.

Despite my love 3rd games are going to have to be altered more in future gens to make me even consider buying them. It just gets to the point where they're repetitive. GF did a good job with this (changes from first two games in 3rd) in Emerald. It to me was just so different from ruby and sapphire (moving pokes, johto starters, battle frontier, interesting story, rebattling gyms). The other 3rd games weren't as good as Emerald, imo. GF should use this as a platform for future 3rd installations.

I like the 3rd games more than the original two, they add more features and a slightly better plot twist then the original two.

Ruby & Sapphire was great until you finished it and only had the battle tower to challenge. Until Emerald came and gave us the Battle Frontier and the extra features, same with D/P/PT. And hopefully B/W/G(?)

F.Y.I. G = Gray, and isn't the official name, I just use that name.

Definitely my favorites. Emerald is my favorite game by far. Platinum brings up the rear. They just have more features. A LOT more features. Crystal introduced the Battle Tower, Emerald introduced the Battle Frontier, and Platinum added new twists to plot lines. They just interest me a bit more. c:

If you liked the paired games, you'll likely like the third game. Inversely, if you hated the paired games, the third game won't interest you.

I loved Crystal, Emerald, and (at the time at least) Yellow. I never bothered with Platinum. :/

That's not how a development cycle works at all - at some point down the line, you have to release a game. Nor does that account for customer or critic feedback which is funneled into improvements made for the third version.

That's not true all the time, the third game usually puts added stuff into it which makes a lot of people like them more than the first games. My friend didn't really like Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, but he enjoyed Pokemon Emerald when the Battle Frontier was in the game

Disagree. I hate Diamond and Pearl, but I love Platinum. And I love Red and Blue, but I don't care much for Yellow (other than the levels being higher).

I personally love third games!
some of them are really improved if you compare them to the original two!
But that still doesn't stop me from playing the first two too!

I like third games. They expand on the first two to make one really good game.

However I HATE the basic idea of the third games, and this crap Nintendo and Game Freak (Not sure who's to blame here) have been pulling for all these years. Why, why, why do you have to release the same game three times? What's wrong with making one? Money, of course.

The whole idea of Pokemon has always been to beat gyms and catch Pokemon, easy right? Wrong! If you actually want a certain Pokemon or complete your Pokedex you have to go out and make sure you get the right game. But half the time the Pokemon you want are in two different games. The biggest difference in the two being one legendary (except Ruby and Sapphire, which I applaud for actually being different.) All they want to do is make you spend $120 on the same game. It isn't even fun because now you have to progress through the exact same game two times in a row.

Then what do they do a few months to a year later? Release a game that has all the Pokemon you want, both legendaries, and in Emralds (Best 3rd game ever!) both teams. And you can't just not get it, the third game is 99% of the time superior and has new features and story elements you just can't pass up. Great now you've spent $180 on slightly altered versions of the same game.

And with that I end my rant. Don't get me wrong, I love Pokemon. I just hate the way they market it. I might as well just wait for the English version of the third B/W game to come out becuase I already know it will be better.

With the advent of online trading you don't exactly need to buy both games to get almost every local Pokémon. And hey, I'm sure with enough bargaining you can even get the mascot legendary out of someone. Even before then the intention was often around having local groups of people who owned various versions who would trade amongst themselves to fill in the gaps of availability.

While that is a good point it doesn't apply to me. For I am a loner without Wi-Fi, lucky me. But more of my point is that I want it all in one game. I find it inconvienient that I have to make a choice between two games just for one or two Pokemon. But whatever, it's Nintendo so they can do whatever they want. Because you know, they own like one third of the world, Disney owning the other two thirds.
